Location, the rest is the way below expectations.
When it comes to Spain Melia brand is a synonym for quality and high-end experience. Apparently not, in Alicante at least. They advertise to have a swimming pool.. Guess what? In colder months this an aquarium as the water is too cold to swim. Now try to explain this "marketing misrepresntation" to your kids who were looking forward to enjoy some water activities. As an alternative, Melia offers a swimming pool (paid option) next door, who would turn you down because you don' stay there. When you ask for a late checkout, they would offer you this at the rate of 10EUR per hour. Off-season, in a half-empty hotel. Seriously? Want to pay 5* price and get 2* experience, here is Melia Alicante for you..

Hotel was a very high standard. Rooms were spacious, large closet space. Beds were big and very comfortable. Staff were helpful and spoke excellent English. Breakfast buffet had many options. Would highly recommend.
