Pros:

Simple drop apart from no petrol station near the airport.

Cons:

Booked a VW Golf, then we were asked if we wanted the Golf to pay an extra premium for it. Ended up with a Dacia Sandero. Awful car to drive. Wanted a car we were used to handling in a foreign country. the car handled poorly and was very clunky.

Rented a Mercedes A-3 at the Palermo Airport. Pick up process was chaotic as in normal in Italy. I read that you want to make sure you have sufficient damage coverage so that you don't have to fight with them if something happens to the car. When I rented the car on line, I was directed to Allianz where I purchased trip insurance and car rental damage and theft coverage for $77 with a maximum benefit of $75,000. When I picked up the car at the airport, the agent told me I had no insurance coverage. I ended up purchasing the super damage waiver and a few other extra coverages ( probably not needed) which I now determine to be about $225 so the whole insurance coverage cost me about $300 while the cost to rent the car for a week was $500. Also, the Kayak estimate showed estimated taxes, fees and surcharges at $140 but the road tax and surcharges were $160 plus a 22% VAT of another $205. So what I expect to be a total rental cost of $830 ended up being $1135. Despite the pricing issues, the car was great and the drop off process was easy.

Convenient location to pick up and drop off

Cons:

There were so many hidden fees including location fee and road fees. My two day 70 euro rental somehow turned into 220 euro after i was pretty much forced to take the full coverage.

subject: Contract no. 72967895 o. Complain To whom it may concern: I made an reservation with #43733087us6 for 3 days for the amount the of $75 on a small car (reservation is attached) . Upon our arrival Budget agent: " do you want to upgrade the car". we replied: No. we have already booked 4 door Citroen according to our reservation. Budget agent: " No. you have 2 door car with manual transmission. and if you want to upgrade must pay 8Euro per day". and she insiste. we had to accepted. Because, at that time I had no other option. so we by force agreed to upgrade the car to a 4 door small car for 8 euro per day extra. Budget agent: also convinced us to get extra insurance to cover our 1000 euro deductible for total of 28 euro for 3 days. we asked her: then how much would be the total. Budget agent: 65 euro(3 days rent incl. tax) + 24 euro(car upgrade) + 28 euro(ins. coverage for 1000 euro deductible) = 117 euro with tax around 130 euro she said. On Jan 18th before we returning the car we fill up the car with gas. But, at the returning point the budget agent said; According to our calculation 5 more liter gas must be added into your bill. we were very surprised by the final bill of euro 278.49 and he told us to go to the office inside the terminal. so we went in and there was a Budget agent who did not know anything about the contract and even a conversion of the currency from Dollar to euro and said that he must investigate and will let us know soon. no news until now, It is very clear in our contract which is attached , please be inform that i am not approving any charges to my citi bank card until we settle the matter. The car was clean, and new.

Cons:

Very poor communication, as to a few users on here, i signed up thinking i was going to pay $200 for a week with a car and insurance from Allianz, but that was sadly not the case. Once i arrived, i was greeted with $300 of additional fees, Including VAT, city tax (which the rental said was already paid for when i checked out), and also a destination fee given i was not returning at the same spot, ($65). None of this was mentioned when i booked the car! To top it off, they had the nerve to give me a car with 3/4 of a tank (marked full) and have you agree to the policy of $65 to fill up the tank at the end of the rental if it is not exactly full. Ridiculous. Then Avis recommended we purchase an additional $40/day of insurance to ensure our deductible ($1000) is not put into jeopardy if we get into an accident. Just insane. SO in summary, i got a car with 3/4 tank of gas (marked full). Was supposed to pay $200 with insurance taxes fees for 5 days, ended up paying $600+. STAY AWAY!! SCAM!!

The staff was very disagreeable and pushy to inflate the cost of the rental. Very little information given about the insurance and scary tactics used to push for the maximum coverage that costs even higher than the rental itself. The lady even refused to give any details about the coverage offered by the Visa Card when you pay with it. The drop off was also incombassent the agent was kind of carrying a police investigation. Very slow pick up process. No one went to check the car with me. I was asked to sign contract in the office without seeing the car. Contract stated that there were no scratches, but when I approached the car I found many scratches that were not reflected in the contract. I was not allowed to return the car just by dropping the keys in the box. Return took almost an hour because of a long line and only one staff available for the review of the cars. I had a hard time explaining and providing proof with photos that I did not do any of the scratches that were present on the car.
