They say that time flies, and many of us are already starting to wonder what happened to this year and how  it can possibly be winter again? The silver lining to that question is a simple and joyous one. Winter holidays. Whether you’re getting some serious family time or catching up with old friends, a winter holiday is typically an escape from all those little stresses that come from work, school and the general hustle and bustle of city life. The question we asked is where do we most like to get away to? We dug into our data and found out what the top 5 most searched-for, as well as the top trending, destinations are by Singaporeans seeking their winter wonderland.

The top 5 most popular destinations

The question we asked is where do we most like to get away to during the December holiday? We dug into our data and found out what the top 5 most searched-for, as well as the top trending, destinations are by Singaporeans seeking their winter wonderland.

A lot of you are opting for the convenience that staying closer to home brings, meaning Asian destinations make up most of your top 5 searches.

Tokyo is always a popular destination, and with the contradictory beauty that occurs as snowflakes flurry through the streets of the neon city, it’s no surprise that it takes the crown this year. Manila and Chinese Taipei, both a lot more mild temperature wise than their Japanese cousin, are the second and third most searched for destinations, while the perennially-popular Seoul is the fourth. The only European and long-haul destination that appears in the top 5 is the UK capital – London, proudly taking fifth place in the overall ranking.

The top 5 trending destinations

While popular destinations tend to remain exactly that, it’s always interesting to see where is trending and where Singaporeans are choosing to go that is slightly off of the beaten path. Sometimes it’s the price; sometimes it’s an undiscovered shopper’s paradise, sometimes an insider tip to the best secret food markets. Whatever it is, keeping an eye on the trends can let you experience an incredible location before it gets ‘discovered’ and overrun with tourists. While Tokyo is the most popular destination amongst the general population, Japan is trending elsewhere among Singaporeans. Sapporo shows a massive increase (62%) in searches which places it firmly at the top of the list, and Osaka is also spiking, pushing it into fifth place. Seoul, another gorgeous winter city,  is also going strong with 51% more flight searches this year than last. Malaysia also plays a significant role in the travel life of Singaporeans with warmer tastes, with Kuala Lumpur exhibiting an increase in searches by 49% for the December holidays. Once again there is only one long-haul destination that is trending this high, and that is Christchurch, New Zealand.
