The roads in Harare itself are in relatively good shape, so if you're going to spend most of your time here, a sedan or compact car will be all you need. If you're making an adventure of your visit and want to trek into the surrounding hinterland, then there's no better vehicle than a 4x4; although, in most cases, an MPV or SUV will be sufficient. If you're travelling with a group of friends, then you could also consider hiring a passenger van.
Harare speed limits follow the national road regulations. You'll need to pay attention to the speed limit signs in the centre of the city, as they vary from 50 km/h to 80 km/h depending on the zone. However, the general speed limit in urban areas is 60 km/h, so stick to that and watch out for when it changes to 50 km/h. National roads are also divided into two categories. Roads of a specific width and tarred surface are limited to 80 km/h, with wider ones allowing speeds up to 120 km/h. Keep a look out for signage when you're travelling outside Harare itself.
You'll have to pay for parking wherever you are in central Harare, but the street parking rates are exceptionally cheap compared to what you'll be used to at home. There's a standard hourly rate that applies to all of them, which is around Z$ 150 (A$ 0.60) per hour; it's cheap and in plentiful supply. Popular and convenient inner-city car parks to be recommended include City Parking, the Students Car Park on Arundel Ring Road and the city car park on Third Street.

Pros:
The quick recovery by a respresentative at the Harare Airport!Cons:
Waiting at the Harare Airport for over an hour to finally be told that the vehicle we'd rented wouldn't be ready until the next day! After not showing up at the airport, the representative stayed with us through the ordeal of making sure we got to our destination and a proper vehicle to accommodate our luggage.7.6 Good
