KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Harare

  • Zimbabwe's capital city offers many tourist attractions, but you'd be remiss not to take advantage of its location and visit some of the country's most famous tourist attractions nearby. An easy way is to book car hire in Harare, rather than relying on the somewhat scanty public transport system or paying for taxis. Mukuvisi Woodlands Environmental Centre is a good example. It's a preserved msasa woodland, where you’ll see animals like giraffes and zebras roaming in their natural habitat.
  • You'll likely land at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) when you touch down in Harare. Most international car hire companies have outlets there, so you can either organise this in advance when you book your plane ticket through KAYAK or sort your car hire in Harare once you've landed. The car hire kiosks are in the Arrivals hall, and collecting your car is a simple matter of walking a few hundred metres to the adjacent car park.
  • If you book car hire in Harare, there's a single principle to bear in mind. If you approach a traffic light that's just turned amber, don't brake and stop in anticipation of the consequent red light. The most likely outcome is that you'll be rear-ended by a car behind you that's committed to crossing the intersection. Treat any amber light as an indication that you should accelerate rather than slow down. It's a diametrical approach to what you're used to at home, but strangely enough, it works.
  • If you book Harare car hire, keep top of your mind that the driving law enforcement is rather relaxed, which translates into a generally laissez-faire approach on behalf of local drivers. Make sure to drive defensively and you'll be fine. Another reason for caution is that many of the roads are poorly lit, so stick about 10 km/h below the speed limit just to be sure. This is especially pertinent on the major roads from Harare to the surrounding tourist attractions, as the roads lack passing lanes or shoulders.

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Harare?

The roads in Harare itself are in relatively good shape, so if you're going to spend most of your time here, a sedan or compact car will be all you need. If you're making an adventure of your visit and want to trek into the surrounding hinterland, then there's no better vehicle than a 4x4; although, in most cases, an MPV or SUV will be sufficient. If you're travelling with a group of friends, then you could also consider hiring a passenger van.

  • What's the speed limit in Harare?

Harare speed limits follow the national road regulations. You'll need to pay attention to the speed limit signs in the centre of the city, as they vary from 50 km/h to 80 km/h depending on the zone. However, the general speed limit in urban areas is 60 km/h, so stick to that and watch out for when it changes to 50 km/h. National roads are also divided into two categories. Roads of a specific width and tarred surface are limited to 80 km/h, with wider ones allowing speeds up to 120 km/h. Keep a look out for signage when you're travelling outside Harare itself.

  • Where are the best places to park in Harare?

You'll have to pay for parking wherever you are in central Harare, but the street parking rates are exceptionally cheap compared to what you'll be used to at home. There's a standard hourly rate that applies to all of them, which is around Z$ 150 (A$ 0.60) per hour; it's cheap and in plentiful supply. Popular and convenient inner-city car parks to be recommended include City Parking, the Students Car Park on Arundel Ring Road and the city car park on Third Street.

Overall experience was very positive. Collection was straightforward, I was given a car upgrade (Thank you) and car drove very well. Drop off also straightforward, however customer support attendee could not give me a receipt to show my cash rental payment. Left for my flight not 100% sure if my credit card deposit would be refunded in full. Still pending 4 days on but that’s not to say it won’t be released as up to 7 days. Also no official confirmation email stating rental has ended - just the paperwork from the airport.
