Cape Leveque, Western Australia
It’s quite a journey to get to remote Cape Leveque, on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. However, adventure-seekers will love the four or so hour drive from Broome to reach the white-sand beaches on a backdrop of dramatic, red-tinged cliffs. To fully immerse in incredible swimming, snorkelling and fishing, you can stay at the Kooljaman Eco-Resort or take a day trip from Broome.
Coconut Beach, Queensland
Queensland is home to some of the best beaches in Australia and Coconut Beach, lying between the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, is one of the nicest. Fringed by patches of coral reef, here you can swim in calm, aqua water, snorkel right off the sand and laze beneath the shade of picture-perfect palm trees. Cape Tribulation offers an array of accommodation options surrounded by the lush forest. The easiest way to get there is to fly to Cairns and hire a car or arrange shuttle bus transport.

Blinky Beach, New South Wales
As far as Australian beach holidays go, Lord Howe Island offers all the perks, without the crowds. If a surfboard is your favourite travelling companion, Blinky Beach, on the eastern side of the island, brings the clean, uncrowded breaks you’re looking for. Not only that, but you’ll enjoy great snorkelling when it’s calm, excellent beach fishing and plenty of room to yourself. Fly to Lord Howe Island in under two hours from Brisbane or Sydney.
Agnes Water, Queensland
As the most northerly beach on the east coast, Agnes Water is a hot spot for surfing in Australia. Though it’s popular with locals, it’s still relatively off the tourist radar. This is set to change though, with locals comparing the region to the Sunshine Coast’s Noosa, before it became a tourist mecca. With golden sands, rocky headlands and a coastal camping reserve, this spot won’t be on the ‘secret Australian beaches’ list much longer, so visit as soon as you can! To get there, fly to Bundaberg and hire a car for the drive, which is under two hours.
Turimetta Beach, New South Wales
When you’re looking to avoid the crowds at Sydney beaches, try your luck at Turimetta. It’s only 350 metres long, tucked in between iconic Narrabeen and Warriewood in northern Sydney. With cliffs, rock formations, short beach breaks for surfing and rocky platforms for fishing, there’s plenty to do. There are no facilities here though, and it’s unpatrolled, however that’s what adds to its natural appeal. Practise water safety while swimming, pack a picnic for snacks and bask in the serenity.
