Top Tips for Hiring a Convertible Car in Cape Town

  • It is important when considering Cape Town convertible car hire to bear in mind that, although the great weather and sunshine can make convertibles an attractive car hire option, this needs to be balanced with the high rates of car theft that occur in South Africa. Although Cape Town has a good reputation overall and has a lot of appealing attractions for visitors, it is important to be aware of safety concerns. Convertibles are especially vulnerable to theft, so you should be very careful when driving and parking. If you take the necessary precautions, however, a convertible may certainly add an extra level of enjoyment to your time in Cape Town.
  • Cape Town convertible car hire is something that will certainly open up your travel options in the region and its environs. Without a private vehicle, many places in the area will be largely inaccessible or, at least, inconvenient and difficult to get to. Convertibles add an extra dimension to your travels and allow you to take maximum advantage of the great weather Cape Town is famous for.
  • If you are contemplating Cape Town convertible car hire, be prepared for some heavy traffic in the city. Cape Town, unfortunately, has a reputation for being among the most traffic-congested cities in South Africa, and the city’s lack of public transport infrastructure is often blamed for this situation. Having a car will make it possible for you to get around but not necessarily easily. Outside the city, however, the advantages of a convertible start to show themselves. Just be aware that road conditions do vary and some are better maintained than others.
  • When parking your convertible, it is essential to keep the roof up. This is perhaps obvious but still worth mentioning. Because of the risk of theft, you should definitely take care to park only in well-guarded areas safe from theft. Never park on the street or anywhere that leaves your car unattended or out of the eyesight of someone responsible, as car theft is, unfortunately, very common.
  • Book your convertible car hire in Cape Town at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • July is typically the cheapest month to hire a convertible car in Cape Town, with prices around S$ 396 per day. The most expensive month is February, with average prices of S$ 483 per day.

FAQs About Hiring a Convertible Car in Cape Town

  • Where can I park my convertible safely in Cape Town?

Parking in Cape Town can be chaotic and is something of a free-for-all. There is free, mostly unregulated, on-street parking available all over the city, but parking a convertible in public is definitely risky and an invitation to theft or vandalism. It is therefore a good idea to only park in well-guarded car parks. There are several guarded car parks in the centre of the city and many businesses and hotels have parking with closed-circuit camera monitoring and on-site attendants.

  • Why is hiring a convertible more expensive?

Convertibles are a variety of luxury car, which automatically makes them more expensive to hire. Additionally, as the soft roof of a convertible makes it more vulnerable to theft and vandalism, insurance costs also tend to be higher. In South Africa in particular, the high rates of car theft have added significant premiums to insurance packages for luxury vehicles. Be careful to read your hire agreement carefully to see what you are insured for when hiring, as your security deposit is likely to be quite high.

  • Where are some good places to hire a convertible in Cape Town?

There are good locations to hire a car in Century City, Maitland and Salt River. Several major international car hire firms operate in Cape Town and a good range of convertible options are available. The main companies, such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Budget all have offices in the arrivals hall of Cape Town Airport (CPT) and, although it generally costs more to hire at the airport, you can easily hire online before your trip and arrange to pick up your car on arrival.

  • How does KAYAK find such low convertible car hire prices?

KAYAK compares convertible car hire prices from all major car hire companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

I was under the impression I had already paid for the rental. They told me that was just a booking fee, and charged me an additional $50 USD. There also was an incredibly long wait to check in despite there being only one other person in line in front of me. The staff also said I could have asked to have my status transferred to the SA system, but I was not aware I needed to do this. I am wondering why I spent $50 through Kayak, will this be refunded?

I’m currently in the process of perusing this fraudulent claim made by WOODFORD CAR RENTAL in Cape Town.

When picking up I fave the agent a voucher for the rental but I charged a 2nd time. I paid for full coverage insurance, my hubcaps got stolen and I have just received an invoice for the cost of replacing the hubcaps. This is not what I expected having paid the insurance premium. Will never rent from Woodford again. A rental that should have cost just over $300 is now costing me over $1000.

Friendly efficient front desk. Car was clean, no problems. Actually parked where it was supposed to be!. Return of vehicle was seamless. Everything excellent. Did not like the exorbitant deposit on my credit card though, almost twice the total value of the 2 week rent?
