Cons: At arrival after a long wait, customer service was unhelpful and even denied my credit card covered insurance (I have a platinum card that includes coverage) I then showed my own insurance but they still said I had no option but to buy additional insurance, I've never heard this. Then was told the car wasn't ready and still had to wait. Upon returning the car customer service again was rude, slow and extremely picky charging for any small thing they could.

Pros: We got a car
Cons: It was not the car I reserved. Our luggage didn't fit at all. Luckily they had another car in the same class that was the one I reserved, but a bit of hassle to get it swapped.
Also I got charged for a second driver when the booking said I wouldn't. Lastly it was a bit confusing as I thought I signed up for the insurance through the booking online and then when I got there I has no insurance through the reservation. Tricky.

Best way to see South Africa
Pros: We were upgraded from our basic rental into a small SUV for no extra charge, it was clean and in great shape and took us all around South Africa no problem. We had a USB plug in for our phones which was nice to listen to directions or our own music.
Cons: Nothing was wrong with the car or service, the only thing I could suggest is letting the renters know about the spare tire in case of emergencies.

Hard sell on the insurance.
Pros: Reasonably priced rental. Fast service at the counter.
Cons: My credit card company provides insurance coverage for car rentals. Hertz told me to purchase their insurance or they will place a "hold" on my credit card for the FULL VALUE of the vehicle USD 12,000! After a week I am still waiting for the final bill and the explanation for the extra charges they tacked on.

Decent car, beware the South African insurance rules
Pros: The car was clean and worked fine and the check in and out process were fairly straight forward - returning the car was really easy.
Cons: I usually waive insurance because I've never had an issue with driving. However, in South Africa, waiving insurance means they put the entire value of the car on your credit card as a deposit. So I ended up paying for insurance (and not needing it) rather than carrying such a huge amount on my credit card. Apparently you can avoid that with a letter from your bank - but that was not clear ahead of time and after having rented in many countries, this was a first.
Cons: Never actually rented the car. After waiting 3 hours (arrived at 9am) for a car, we decided to cancel a reservation. Multiple other people cancelled as well. Staff were friendly, but disorganized and had zero concept of time to expect car.

Do NOT rent from Dollar or Thrifty - Bad customer
Cons: The rental was done by Thrifty. They did not have the car that we reserved at the time we arrived. They gave us an upgrade, but wanted it back the next day. We were driving four hours East and the car could not be picked up. So we arranged to have it picked up at our next stop 2.5 hour away at the air port.
That morning I received a call and arranged that we could exchange the car between 5-6 pm at the house. We had to go out of our way to be back at the hotel at 5 we waited until 5:45 gave them a call and they said that they would send someone out, it would take 2.5 hours. We had dinner reservation at 6:30 so that didn't work They finally answer the phone, and said they were too busy to answer the phone.
The next day we gave up and drove the car back to the airport to return the car.
Phone Call = $50
Time lost from our vacation = 5 hours

Pros: Once I got the correct car, was very nice
Cons: My car wasn't read at time of rental, there was an issue booking through Kayak as a third party booking service. As a result, instead of having an SUV, I was given a base model pick-up. Dollar was very good about changing it out the next day, but only after I had to make several phone calls and be available for an exchange, which impacted the plans for my vacation. Lastly, I have a charge on my credit card that occurred several days after my issue free return, for which I have been unable to get an answer for. Tank was full, no tickets, and no other issues upon return, so I an still waiting to learn why I have an extra charge.

Pros: Comfortable car
Cons: Despite having topped off the tank before returning the vehicle we were charged for an additional 13 liters of petrol. I'm not entirely sure how driving 190 KM in a Chevy Aveo we could have used 38 liters of gas...In the future I am avoiding this company.

Good car, good price but terrible service
Pros: The car was new and worked well. And the price was very fair.
Cons: The service was terrible at the Cape Town office. When I arrived to pick up the car, there was a line going out the door from the rental office because they did not have any cars at that location. They told me to pay and wait, which I did. After 5 hours of waiting, they tried to give me a worse car than I had paid for. The only way to get the actual car for which I had paid was to come back the next morning, which I unhappily did.

Good car, long queue's, GPS didn't work
Pros: Good clean car for a good price. Drop off was a smooth and quick process.
Cons: Queued for almost an hour to collect a pre booked car. I paid extra to rent a sat nav which didn't work and wouldn't pick up a GPS signal.

Avis Cape Town is too focused on very minor scratches--causes worry
Pros: I rented a minivan/people carrier. It was a low-end model that was small compared to the category rented, but was good value-for-money. I would rather save money than have a "luxury" model minivan with extra bells and whistles. The car fit 7 people (only with no luggage) or 5 people with luggage. Would have been better if the advertisement made that clear, because it said 7 passengers and 4 pieces of luggage, but in truth it's EITHER 5 passengers + 4 pieces of luggage OR 7 passengers and no luggage.
Cons: When I picked up the car, Avis asked me to note every scratch on the car. This made me nervous, because I cannot control if someone parks next to me and opens their door into the car making a small scratch. Luckily, during our 12-day rental this did not happen. But when I returned the car, Avis was very, very focused on every little tiny scratch again, and they made me feel like they might charge me for scratches, even if I did not make them. They should allow for normal small scratches without making the customer feel threatened.

Smooth, efficient, friendly operation
Pros: Completely organized - no hitch. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Explained the various insurance options very clearly with no pressure to get more than I needed. Drop-off took about 30 seconds and I was on my way into the airport.
Cons: Long line at pickup.

You can't help a customer a key locked in the car?
Pros: Pickup and Dropoff was fine. The vehicle was more or less what we expected.
Cons: I needed some help when I accidentally locked my keys in the truck of the vehicle. I realize this is my fault, but the staff lied and told me someone was en route to assist me. Further they told me I would receive a call from the manager. Nearly two hours after requesting emergency assistance, I received a call wherein I learned that Thrifty in SA does not unlock cars and I would have to do it myself. Thanks! I would have loved to have that information two hours prior. Foreign country, unusual circumstances, unhelpful/rude lying staff. Will not rent here again.

Pros: Picked up downtown and dropped off at airport
Cons: Had to go into my home e-mail to print off confirmation as they said LDW insurance was mandatory and they wanted proof i had a contract without taking the insurance.
No final paperwork was provided at the airport and I will have to check my credit card receipts to confirm the deposit was refunded.

Bad pickup - everything else was good
Pros: The Value for money (for the car itself) was great.
Dropoff was also very fast
Cons: At the pickup time the car was not available. 5 other consumers also waiting for their cars. Our car arrived after 1,5 hours waiting.
