Cons: The "Western" type breakfast they offered could be more "western".
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s like Japanese style cottage and staff hospitality was very good.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is very spacious and clean. The property is very well maintained.
Cons: We stayed in the room Ran in the main building. It was smelly in the toilet so perhaps there’re some issues with the pipe or drainage in that room.
Yamada Bessou - Beppu - Building
3
9.0 Excellent (996 reviews)
S$ 163+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Yamada Bessou in Beppu, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Takegawara Onsen and Umitamago. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: As someone who lives in Japan and has stayed at many older ryokan (inns) I found Yamada Bessou to exceed our expectations. Breakfast was very nice and don't miss the rotemboro (outdoor bath).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nostalgia in every corner. Yamada Bessou is the only place anyone should ever stay at in Beppu. It was built in the 1930s and remodeled after WWII, and it's retained it's charming retro vibes. I came to Beppu to bathe and relax, so here I bathed in the communal bath and magical, open air bath many times. I spent hours in the parlor area reading a good book with quiet music playing in the background. Futon floor bed was comfortable, facilities were spotless (except perhaps communal bath), and the building was beautiful. The photos online don't do this place justice. Breakfast was delicious, and there was tea and coffee available at any time. The hosts are lovely and friendly. I immediately asked for a second night, and I'm glad I could stay longer.
Cons: The women's communal bathroom seemed a bit aged for comfort, like it could use a good power washing. But that kinda added to the charm of the place, so it was no big deal. Also wished they served dinner, because the breakfast was so good!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The most wonderful staff who made me feel comfortable during my stay. Staff was mostly speaking English and if they didn’t, they still managed to be really friendly and helpful. Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Really loved the house and the outdoor Onsen!
7.0 Good
Pros: The private outdoor onsen for guest is one of the best onsen experience
Cons: futon for sleeping is old and thin, not comfortable and cause back pain
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming Ryokan. Staff were delightful. Onsen was lovely. Beautiful breakfast. All in all a perfect stay.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very charming and few rooms only guarantees privacy and no noise. You hardly see other guests
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen is about 15 minutes on foot from the train station. Not too difficult to find. We were welcomed with a cup of hot green tea and sakura mochi (it's cherry blossom season after all). There's a big beautiful cherry tree right in the front--can't imagine how beautiful it would have been when it blossomed a few weeks earlier. Initially we didn't book breakfast but we booked it when we arrived and we were not disappointed. Considering the cost of eating around Beppu, $10 for a breakfast is very good value. It was served in a traditional way in a large dining area with other guests; we enjoyed it very much. We also like the staff who can communicate well in English and their hospitality. People may have good days and bad days but in Japan, customers always expect a smile and courtesy. That's just how things work in Japan. Our next onsen in Yufuin shows how traditional this one is, from the way the host cleans the wheels of your suitcase before carrying it to your room, to the look, the feel of the onsen, the way food is served to you. And we like that a lot. Overall a very enjoyable experience. We're so glad we picked this over some large Western style near the train station. And you'll be too.
Cons: The facilities are a bit older but very well and extremely clean. There's nothing not to like.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: A nice Ryokan with a very good quality/price ratio in an interesting place. Onsen close to it are great.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location. Walking distance to many restaurants and a big supermarket which opens very late. Also can take local bus to downtown Beppu area and Beppu station.
Cons: No shower facilities, but there is lots of onsen in the area.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The space and the historical architecture. The handy location - close to shops/onsens/public transport/tourist attraction. A very obliging host. And the lift to the ferry the next day was greatly appreciated.
Cons: A few hooks to hang clothes. Some plates/bowls/cutlery to make use of the microwave. These are minor issues and we manage well without them for one night.
7.0 Good
Cons: It is traditional Japanese style. As older people the one thing we would have liked would have been back rests when sitting on the floor.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very nice and the location very good. There are many restaurants close to the property and also a supermarket. The room is small but there is almost everything. Free drive to the train station. Close to Bus Station.
Cons: There is no bath or shower in the room so you need to use a public onsen nearby, but can be a good experience if the weather is nice outside.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The studio unit was quite complete and able to do some light cooking. Quiet neighborhood and with a big supermarket short walking distance away. Many onsens nearby, both cheap and expensive ones.
Cons: Very narrow lane to go into the property for car.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was a typical japanese accomodation. The staff was just great! Highly recommended accomodation!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Super clean, warm and fully equipped with everything one could possibly need for a short stay. We were chuffed at having a washing machine and lots of blankets. The location was perfect for sightseeing the famous hot springs of Beppu. We were sad to not have booked another night there. Highly recommended!
Cons: Nothing bad to say about it. We found it absolutely perfect!
Ryotei Matsubaya - Beppu - Building

8.9 Excellent (328 reviews)
S$ 407+
Overview Reviews
Located in Beppu, Beppu Kankaiji Onsen Ryotei Matsubaya is within a 15-minute drive of Hells of Beppu and Takegawara Onsen. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, luggage storage, and an elevator. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The new wing I stayed is nicely decorated, clean and not crowded. I booked the penthouse and a twin room. Both are very nice. Staff are helpful but speak very limited English.
Cons: The food was pre-cooked long ago and was getting cold or hard when we ate. Beef was cut in a big piece (approx. 1.3 x 1.3 x 5 cm) for grill. Since it's A4 or A5 beef, very oily when you put such a big piece in your mouth. Booking.com doesn't offer children price and choice of menu. I paid adult price for my 2 kids which should be cheaper if I could pay children price. The hotel couldn't partially refund the price paid after they found out I brought 2 kids. The property is at the mountain, in the middle of nowhere. If you don't drive, good for a night's stay so you don't have to worry about transportation. The hotel offers free pick up service from Beppu JR station.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: good helpful staff.great food.great onsen
Cons: location a bit remote. ok if you have car
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property and the room was huge and clean. Dinner and breakfast was amazing too.
Cons: Not accessible by public transport. Took a taxi to the hotel but staff offered us a ride down via their van when we checked out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so welcoming and friendly. It was great to experience staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is amazing. A modern taken on an Onsen. The rooms are fantastic, a great size, amazing view of the bay and included our our hot spring bath! The staff we also amazing and so helpful with everything we needed. Also had continental breakfast options for those who wanted it.
Cons: It was a little out of town and required a taxi to get in or out. There were a few restaurants close by but we didn’t test them out.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff, Yoko-san was superb. The private onsen was great but the food was superb.
Cons: Location was a bit out, but still okay
9.6 Excellent
Pros: High level traditional Japanese hotel. The staff was unbelievable, amazing. The facility is beautiful, clean, quiet and very relaxing. The family Onsen and the private onsen are well maintained, nice and clean. Food just perfect, great culinary experience.
Cons: I don’t take it as a critic, but as a warning to western travelers! Being a traditional Japanese hotel (with the beds on the tatami and so on..) the meals are Japanese. The Japanese breakfast is very big (rice, soup, various kinds of fish, pickles) and could be a bit difficult to approach for some Europeans... But, as I said before the food was just perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful staff, excellent food, great Onsen very clean.
Cons: Futons could have been a little thicker.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s expensive but for what you pay for you get back in excellent customer service. Staff greet you at the gate on your way into check in and until you close the taxi door, will always be available to assist you. It’s a quiet place with only a few rooms which means very few guests, practically the whole place can be yours if booked during the weekdays or low-season. Rooms are massive, more than enough to fit 5 or 6 people in a single room (the more people the cheaper it gets since they change by room). Dinner and breakfast were amazing as well, full 10 course dinner and a 7 course breakfast. Picky eaters might not appreciate the Japanese style menu. There is a family bath which everyone in the hotel shares which ones one family at a time. Good location close to Jikoku Meguri within walkable distance.
Cons: The onsen was a little less grand compared to what i imagined. You could potentially go to the hotel by bus, but with a lot of luggage it would be quite tiring since it’s it’s up hill.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very friendly and flexible. The garden outside was beautiful and the atmosphere in the ryokan was very relaxing. The baths in the room were great and also the bigger private outdoor bath was usable for free. The selection of food was amazing, dishes looked beautiful and were very delicious.
Cons: There had been a misunderstanding about a special diet requested in advance. However, after clarification the staff was able to fix the issue by the next day and the updated menu was excellent.

6.0 Good
Pros: Close proximity to the train station. Kitchen facilities very adequate and nice
Cons: No towel provided. The three people private room was very bad. It is just a small two people private room with a futon added. However, the room is not big enough to accommodate three people and luggage after the futon bed is added. If you are a grown up sleeping on the futon bed, you have to either curl up or tuck your legs under the bunk bed.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a very nice hostel. Probably the nicest hostel I've stayed at, almost like a hotel. The coffee was delicious, and beds were comfortable. Location is also very close to the station (4 minute walk) but tucked away in a quiet back street. Also close to Beppu Onsen!
Cons: It is a bit on the pricier side for hostels, with reason though.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean in entire guesthouse no matter in the room, washroom or kitchen. Near to JR Station and restaurant.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great only a minute walk from beppu station, many onsen in the area. The room space is very big. You can keep your luggages in locker after check out without charge.
7.5 Good
Cons: I booked a room instead of dormitory to sleep well, but the walls and doors of rooms are not noise-proof
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent check in. Day receptionist so friendly and helpful. Hostel is new looking and clean. Kitchen is equipped to the level of a small restaurant. Bunk and bedding is comfortable, good dooner and pillow. Dorm is spacious with sofa, lockers and window. Toilets and showers are numerous, laundry available. Luggage storage is excellent and secure. Outdoor slippers for going to onsen. Location is close to station. Travel info is present. Common area is large and PCs for use. Good communication. Would stay again.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were absolutely incredible! The kindness, attention to detail and the welcome has been absolutely unprecedented. The rooms and the location right next to the beautiful river and the gardens were spectacular.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful staffs , the traditional Japanese cottage is beautiful , tatami very comfort , they provided free private onsen , that’s amazing .
Cons: The bathroom shower is weak to supply hot water , luckily we use onsen bathroom , that’s better than bathroom in room ,
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen is excellent with great privacy. The staff service is attentive. The room is clean and comfortable also with good size.
Cons: The price I booked is a bit too high. The food quality is not as good as I expect but still quite nice.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room were inclusive of breakfast & dinner. And both meals were amazingly done! The staff were very very helpful and friendly and helped us in all Enquiries that we had. This is by far the most amazing stay we had!
Cons: Nothing at all. All were too good to be true!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and friendly staff, being very kind to my 6-year old daughter. The hotel is well situated being at the mountain, if you want to spend some days in calm and relaxing atmosphere, this hotel is definitely much better than others you can find at seaside Beppu (plenty of tourists). Also the first day we waked up and find many monkeys on the top of the roof and they jumped from one tree to another, fantastic scene! The meals are great, authentic Japanese traditional meals!
Cons: Nothing, everything perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very helpful, they took real good care of us. Nishimoto-San picked us up and dropped us off at the Beppu station, and also showed us how to take the bus to hot springs. The maid at the hotel was very attentive, making our bed, setting up breakfast and dinner and explaining to us what they are.
Cons: Nothing really. The facilities were fantastic. If you love privacy, you won’t be disappointed. Very quiet and peaceful. If you want late night snack, then you are out of luck. The hotel has a drink-only vending machine. You could stop by 7-11 which is about 15 minutes walk away from the hotel. That’s what we did.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was most inspiring! It was clean, garden immaculate, the air is fresh.
Cons: The toilet is cold.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are so nice and responsive Food is great

Pros: Good location Friendly staff 3 hot springs Good service
7.0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was good and the place was clean and very spacious. The onsens were nice.
Cons: I arrived a few hours before check-in time, but there was no one to speak to at the reception or to keep the luggage before the actual check-in time. A bit expensive for the amenities.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very near to Beppu Station & cheerful & helpful staff
Cons: No staff available in Ryokan when try to check in early... Got to leave the bags inside unattended unsure of its security & safety.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really comfy traditional Japanese inn, exactly what I wanted for a short getaway. The place was really clean and simple. You get your own toilet and sink, but shower in the onsen which is shared among other guests in the hotel. It was still nice because the onsen is for private use, so each guest can use it for 30-40 mins at a time.
Cons: During the morning, I wanted to relax in my room after breakfast and before checking out, but a gardener started working right outside my window so I was unable to just sit and enjoy the view. I would have hoped the gardener could have waited until after 10AM checkout to start.

Pros: Food and service is good, we like the dinner in our room. Staff are friendly
Cons: Overall is good as expected
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Food was outstanding. Having dinner served in your own room whilst enjoying a 5star quisine and service was a surprising and welcoming novelty. All staff were so kind and helpful. They went out of their way to make us wellcome and attended to our every need. Stunning views and a very good onsen with great toiletries. Superbly efficient operation.
Cons: We stayed in a traditional japaneese room, which appeals to families. It would have been nice to have an option of segregating a small part of the room with sliding doors for parents to stay awake in, while children to go to sleep earlier. This is something we found useful in other similar hotels, that we stayed at in Japan.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, clean and comfortable room. Onsen and rotenburo were excellent! Dinner was served in the room course by course with fantastic explanation. Superb!
Cons: Breakfast restaurant was uninspired and staff were superficial.
