Phoenix car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Phoenix
Verified travelerSept 2026
Gas pre-purchase turned out to be good decision.
Verified travelerJul 2026
The rental car center is a simple train ride from the airport to the rental car center. Simple, fast and easy.
Verified travelerJul 2026
People drive insane here. Have insurance. Don’t get a big or expensive car if possible. Hertz, Avis, and budget are inside the airport car rental area. Doublecheck on all others. They are usually sold out on cars so reserve ahead.
Verified travelerAug 2026
You need to call and confirm your rental costs. Do not think an online booking is final. They will change the price on your during a time you are most stressed and unable to get it resolved real-time! Very disappointed.
Verified travelerMay 2026
Just pay 5 dollars more a day to not have to get a shuttle from the rental car center.
Verified travelerDec 2025
Make sure to give yourself a lot of time for pick up. Many first time car renters, people with no credit card, etc. really slows things down with this company. I would join any premium clubs offered to skip the counter rental process and go right to the vehicle.
RaviFeb 2026
Arrive several hopes before the pickup time because the line will likely be very long and the desk will be understaffed. There were at least 10 unmanned stations which made the delay that much worse
Verified travelerNov 2025
Go w a brand name rental better signs and easier to access the car and drop off!
CathyNov 2025
An SUV is the best, we have some beautiful sights off the main roads
Verified travelerOct 2025
Always arrange for mid size with free cancellation is recommended
Verified travelerNov 2025
Probably to pick a lower class vehicle because it won’t be available and get a free upgrade.
Verified travelerJul 2025
There are good gas stations within 1-2 miles of the airport, so easy to fuel up prior to drop off.
DavidJul 2025
Use a reputable company in the rental car center that has real live people onsite to help.
JudithJun 2025
Know your flight hours and confirm with the establishment will be open and provide service
Verified travelerAug 2025
Lots of electric vehicles in rental fleets. Don’t let them stick you with one. The charging times to get a full charge is ridiculous. If you have to take an electric vehicle negotiate that you will not have to charge.
MichaelMay 2025
Give yourself extra time if you find there is a problem and you have to go back to the counter to get a different vehicle
Verified travelerMar 2025
Check the car carefully before leaving, if you get an electric car, make sure you add in time for having to charge it before returning
CathyApr 2025
When you get dropped off outside ,you have to take an elevator to go up to the level of the car rental desk.
KevinApr 2025
Only use companies in the official rental car center
Verified travelerMar 2025
Make sure you have proof of insurance and patience.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Note the address of the pick up location carefully. Anything other than 1805 E Sky Harbor Circle S means you will have to take a shuttle to an off-site lot, so add an extra 25-30 minutes to your schedule
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Be prepared for it to take a long time to get from the terminal to the rental car place. If you’re in a hurry, it will not go well.
Verified travelerJan 2025
Car rental area closer to airport/ terminal. It takes too long to catch a flight when the rental car section is far away.
Verified travelerJan 2025
Download Gas Buddy and check refueling prices, pay attention to fees and whether rental is in-terminal or not.
Verified travelerDec 2024
Make sure you get any "free" upgrade in writing. Check your credit card for u requested insurance.
Verified travelerJan 2025
Photograph car dents and scrapes Keep all paperwork Confirm pricing
BrandiJan 2025
Check to verify if you are renting from the airport rental center, I was deceived into booking when the rental center was 30 miles away.
julieOct 2024
getting a car in the airport is hectic and could take hours, but NU is near the airport (with a shuttle to and from) and your in and out within a fraction of the time.
Verified travelerNov 2024
I recommend completing all steps prior to picking up the car so it is reserved when you arrive and pick it up.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Book through actual rental companies, or at least bigger names if you book through 3rd parties. Fuel yourself, they up-charge the prepaid one.
Verified travelerOct 2024
Pay attention to when they close. Don’t trust the fact it lets you rent it
AntonSept 2024
books in advance, far in advance prices in Phoenix Sky Harbor swing dramatically
Verified travelerJul 2024
Book ahead, as far ahead as possible. Keep it simple, only get what you need
Verified travelerJul 2024
Easy pick up and return using the tram from airport to rental center
Verified travelerJun 2024
Don’t book online with enterprise, call them to check if car is available. Their online inventory does not match reality.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Book well in advance to ensure the vehicle type you want is available.
AlexApr 2024
So far,, Hertz has been best. And be prepared to go a long distance to/from the gate to the rental car center.
EllenMay 2024
They will try to upsell you if you are traveling to Sedona (elevation change). You don’t need it. Normal car is fine.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Reserve your car in the same name as the one on the credit card you use.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Fuel near drop off is 30-40 cents more expensive than away from airport.
JedApr 2024
Avoid dark paint colors in the sun
Verified travelerMar 2024
Don't use any service that does not provide shuttle to off airport locations.
RoseyFeb 2024
Sign up for Gold membership before so you don’t have to wait 2 hours to check in then get your car. You’ll only have to wait 30 minutes at the exit.
EllenJan 2024
Give plenty of time to drop car off. Also the gas station nearest the airport was about 3x the cost of gas—we went to one about a3 blocks further away and paid a normal price for gas.
Verified travelerDec 2023
It is a huge airport. The car rental is in a separate area. Prepare enough time for the return.
christineDec 2023
The GPS is confusing on getting back to the car rental facility. Better to follow the signs.
Verified travelerJan 2024
Drivers are generally aggressive, but overall not bad if you stick to the rules
RickDec 2023
No issues, just a bit busy and crowded for the concert we attended.
BenjaminJan 2024
Make sure you wanna rent with LIMITED miles instead of unlimited
Verified travelerJan 2024
Make sure you complete all pick up requirements way beforehand.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Get there earlier than you plan
Verified travelerOct 2023
I thought driving in Phoenix was easy - the roads are easy to navigate, the speed limits are posted and most folks follow them, and even at 5p traffic, everything was accessible.
JennyNov 2023
Dollar had one of the shortest lines at the airport and the car we got was nearly new. Great rate too.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Be ready to drive fast! Lots of routes available that aren’t on freeways if you prefer that.
Verified travelerSept 2023
don’t use Nu. use budget or avis or hertz. it’s worth the extra few dollars
VictorNov 2023
Easy in and out, from the airport take the Sky train to car rental
Verified travelerOct 2023
The airport is confusing and there's a lot of construction. Once you get away from the airport and construction, it's just like driving in any other city.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Renting an electric car would be very economical. Traffic is surprisingly hectic any hour of the day.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Sign up for car programs to avoid significant waiting in line.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Double check where pick up is located
Verified travelerNov 2023
Highway driving can be a little crazy
Verified travelerSept 2023
lots of construction-maintain speed limits
Verified travelerNov 2023
Be careful of traffic cameras.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Live a little and upgrade.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Phoenix

  • Most tourists visiting Phoenix fly into the Sky Harbor International Airport. Here you’ll find it both easy and convenient to rent a car. All of the hire car companies are centrally located in one place. Although this building is off site from the airport, travelers can catch the shuttle just outside of baggage claim to get to the hire car center.
  • During your stay in Phoenix, you’ll definitely want to make a visit to the desert, where you’ll find many opportunities to enjoy nature. The Phoenix desert is home to a botanical garden, a zoo, and fishing lagoons. Rent a car and take the scenic route to the desert to enjoy views of the canyons and desert trees.
  • Tourists visiting Phoenix will likely have to take I-10 to travel from East to West around the city. Traveling along this highway, the glare from the sun can be unbearable at times -- be sure to have your sunglasses readily accessible to improve visibility and avoid eye strain.
  • Downtown Phoenix can experience the largest traffic jams in the city. Travel is most hectic in the business district during rush hour, which is Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and in the evening from 4 pm. to 5:30 p.m. Traffic in the immediate downtown area might not clear up, however, until around 7:00 p.m. If you need to travel during these hours, be sure to visit the Arizona Department of Transportation website to learn about traffic accidents, construction, and other potential traffic slowdowns. They may provide you with alternative routes to make traveling easier.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Phoenix for S$ 45 or less
  • Medium rental cars in Phoenix are around 48% cheaper than other car types, on average

I prepaid for this rental through Kayak and have the paperwork to prove that. After turning in the car, I was charged $861.92 for some unknown reason. I called Avis on 4/14/26 to dispute the charge. The customer service person I spoke with said they couldn't see any reason why I was charged that amount and submitted a request for refund of $861.92. They said the credit would post in 3-5 business days. I called Avis again today to follow up on this and the customer service person informed me that the refund request had been declined. He also stated that he could see no reason why I was charged this amount. He then resubmitted the refund request which he said would take 5-7 business days to process. I am skeptical at this point that the refund will be approved. This is the first time that I've used Kayak to book a car rental and the ONLY time I've had an issue like this come up. I have NEVER had an issue booking through Costco or directly with Avis. Kayak's prices may be attractive but it's not worth the problems booking this rental through you has caused me on the back end. I will advise my friends and family to avoid using Kayak because of this.

Terrible experience all around. System wide outage caused massive delays. Employees don’t have a clue what they were doing. After 45 minutes of being patient, with my wife and 2 daughters (3 & 6) waiting way past their bedtimes, I asked one of the 3 Avis employees trying to figure out how to process my rental why was going on. The employee I asked acted incensed that I asked him that. I pointed out that I’ve been there for 45 minutes and several other people had gotten cars in front of me and behind me and he again acted like I was in the wrong for questioning him. Tempers flared after that, and I took my ID and card back and left Avis. I was still charged by Avis, and am working on a refund. I ended having to rent a car from Sixt for a much higher price. They however had me in a car in 10 minutes. I’ll never rent from Avis again.

I’m going as low as possible for the customer service the lack of knowledge constantly being told one thing but it’s something else. I scheduled a pick up for 10:30 I’m there early they couldn’t get me in the car I wanted to- they wouldn’t let me just pay Expedia another $100 to upgrade to what the site said the cost were. Was told to just cancel it and re book WELL I LISTENED TO THEMAND BECAUSE THEY DIDNT GET ME I. A CAR BEFOTE THE 10:30 time entered to pick up they DIDNT REFIND ME AND CHARGED ME FOR THE 2nd and this was for a month rental on top of renting from them the last 2.5 months straight- THATS HOW THEY TREAT YOU GOOD LUCK

The dropoff location was closed the whole day of the dropoff, so I was charged more than 7 times the original rental fee for failing to know that the rental I initially paid for was bogus. Hertz agreed to refund the charges after 6 hours of extra driving and time trying reach customer service, but they lied and refund only a fraction. It took another round of CS to get the rest of the refund. It hasn't been finished yet.

Terrible at car pick up. The online price was not honored $119.56 at the pickup counter of Hertz. The Associate said I was supposed to use the app to secure that price, and he could no longer off it to me. I was livid. But also needed to get to my destination on time. I was charged $130.02 instead. This is not how you maintain a loyal customer base or good experience feedback. I thought Hertz was giving me a great deal on your plat form, but I was misled. I

Ghetto, felt like a scam center. They charged $1000 holding fee and gave me too large of a car. NOT in the airport. Closes at 12:30 so had to sleep in the airport before getting to it. Got there, waited 45 minutes for terrible service. In the end, I just gave up and took an uber to a different car rental facility. It was such a scam and not worth the $100 savings. The pickup experience was excruciating. There was a huge line that snaked back and forth at the Phoenix Rental Car Center. Large signs said you could skip the line by following a few steps on your phone. Nope! I completed all the steps and it even said “Success! proceed to the main rental counter.” What?? So it saved me a few minutes once I finally reached the counter. But I was in that line for longer than an hour. The guy behind me was livid and was barely holding it together. Fix your damn “skip the line” system!! Actually, I vowed to never again rent from Dollar or Thrifty, no matter how cheap. The lines at almost all the other rental car counters were much shorter, and life is short, and time is precious. Stupid to save $20 and have to have such a dismal experience. One positive. The rental car agent was great, and didn’t try to upsell.

Car was pre paid and non refundable so lost the money on the car. Every other car rental company had 2-5 people in the line.

The vehicle I ended up choosing was misaligned. it pulled to the left even at 5-10 mph with the wheel straight. this should be very easy to notice if anyone does any type of testing or inspection of the vehicle. I originally chose the Premium vehicle category, but there was nothing available that fits this description. I was offered a Camry, but there’s no reason to pay extra for the Premium if i’m going to just get a regular mid or full size sedan. so it would have been a waste. To get closer to my money’s worth, and not waste the money I paid for Premium instead of mid-size or full-size sedan. I just upgraded to Luxury, since otherwise it’s like I paid extra for no reason to have paid for Premium but received a regular sedan. When I upgraded to Luxuy it was very expensive, around $40 extra per day for 6 days. The vehicle I received has lots of scuffs on the back, some on the side, and I later realized the alignment was quite off. It pulls to the left, this car may even be unsafe to drive if that isn’t fixed. The associate I had around 4:30-5:30AM on April 4th was very helpful, I can reccomend and speak highly of her assistance. I believe her name was Ava or Eva.

On your website, it lists manager special at a certain price. Then it lists manager special electric for a different price. I chose the manager special since I did not want an electric car. When I got to Payless, they told me I had to take an electric car. Which did not work for where I was going. They charged me another $30 a day in order to upgrade for the manager special to a gas card. It would have been cheaper for me to rent direct from anybody else in this situation.

When I arrived to pick up the car nobody was there to explain where it was. Upon receiving the car there was a crack in the windshield and a missing Nissan logo on the front of the car. When returning the car I gassed it less than a mile away (completely full). Got a message saying the car was short 3 gallons and I would be charged the refueling which was a scam

I booked full size SUV- picture showed Toyota RAV4 or similar. I received Honda hhrv which is a super small SUV. When we pulled next to Toyota rav4 it was half the size. And the Honda they brought to us was super dirty inside and out. On the advertisement, it says they only provide clean/washed car. That’s not true. The car seemed like it just got back from off-roading. Return was simple. But there is still hold on my credit card after a week. The only good thing about this car rental - was the employee who checked us in. He was kind. And I bet he felt really badly after he brought the dirtiest car on the lot, I tipped him.

The pickup experience was AWFUL! We had to ride a shuttle from the car rental location to a separate location a couple miles away, then wait in line for nearly 45 minutes to get the vehicle. I was pleased with the car itself though. After dropping the car off the shuttle back was running so slow and infrequently I had to Uber to the airport to avoid missing my flight.

I reserved a car for 4 days with a 300 mile per day mileage allowance on the Kayak site, through Expedia. After returning the car I was informed that there was a 500 mile fixed limit and charged an additional $280 for additional mileage. What sort of a rental car company does this these days. Beware.

The car rental location was not at the airport as advertised. The rental also scams customers by providing an unreasonably low allowable milage that you then are on the hook for later. Additionally, this "Economy Rent a Car" hides its name, Carzi, so that it's not clear their poor rental practices.

Worst experience ever renting a car. Direction to the rental location were unclear. There was no human being to talk to or take my credit card on site. I had to pry instructions out of someone by text message as no one would answer the phone. I had to use an app to put my credit card into in order to get my rental, which I was not comfortable with. They didn't even have clear instructions on how to get the key to the car and how to get out of the parking garage, as there was no person there to tell you anything. There were no instructions for turning the car in and that process was just as ridiculous as picking it up. I parked the car at the rental place and some person just jumped in it and drove off. No verbal interaction. I will never rent from this company again. There was a couple in the lobby of the airport shuttle station, where this rental company is, having the same issues I was having. In hindsight, on-line reviews for this company are terrible.
