KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Picton

  • Existing as a key connection between the South and North Islands of New Zealand, hiring a car in Picton lets you drive directly onto ferries. The bus service from Picton to Blenheim that passes through the middle of town only operates twice per day in each direction, making a hire car a far better option for freedom of movement. Picturesque Bob’s Bay can be reached with a 7min drive; however, the closest bus stop is over 1 km away and requires a 15min walk. Other hidden coastal destinations can also be discovered, such as Whenuanui Bay, Shakespear Regional Park and Momorangi Bay, which are not connected by public transport.
  • Reception offices for companies including Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty are located inside the terminal at Marlborough Airport (BHE). The hire car facility with parked vehicles is a short 50 m walk to the left once you exit the terminal building. No hire companies have branches at Picton Aerodrome (PCN); however, Ace Car Rentals can organise a shuttle to their office located inside the Picton Ferry Terminal.
  • There are many twists and turns on the coastal roads around Picton and it’s important to obtain a clear line of sight before overtaking. Fast-approaching vehicles may appear from behind blind corners and drivers should be careful not to veer across dividing lane markings. Wildlife often can be spotted on Picton roads at dusk with drivers required to slow down and give right of way to animals.
  • Traffic is peaceful in Picton compared to major cities throughout New Zealand and there’s no need to adjust your driving plans to avoid traffic. Congestion, however, can be noticed surrounding Picton Ferry Terminal as ships are loaded and unloaded, generally noticeable between 12:30–14:00 and 18:30–20:30. Picton experiences strong winds due to its seaside location, especially during spring, and it’s best to reduce speed to handle gusts.
  • Getting familiar with connections will give you much more confidence while driving a hire car in Picton. One major road you will likely drive on is State Highway 1, which is the main highway that runs through Picton, connecting it to other areas of New Zealand. Another is High Street. This is the main street in Picton, and it's where most of the shops and restaurants are located. It can get busy and congested during peak hours, so it's important to be extra cautious while driving on this road. To navigate this road safely, it's important to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists in the area and to drive at a safe speed.
  • You should be at least 21 years old and hold a current driving licence from your home country or an international driver's licence to get a Picton hire car. You will also need to provide a valid credit card for payment and a passport or other form of government-issued identification. Some car hire companies may have additional age restrictions or requirements, so it's best to check with the specific hire agency for their policies if you’re aiming for cheap car hire in Picton. Additionally, it's important to be aware of the road rules and regulations and to follow safe driving practices, to ensure that you do not incur additional costs like damage fees.
  • Picton is located in New Zealand and the country has strict laws regarding drunk driving. The legal alcohol limit while driving in Picton is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, and penalties for driving under the influence can include fines, licence suspension and even imprisonment. In addition, drivers under 20 are bound by a zero-tolerance policy, which makes it unlawful for them to have any amount of alcohol in their system while operating a vehicle. It is important to always follow safe driving practices and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road.

  • What are the child safety seat laws in Picton?

All children under the age of seven must use a child harness that is licenced and suitable for their size and age, according to New Zealand law. Children between the ages of eight and 14 must also use a seatbelt. It’s best to book any necessary car seats in advance if you’re wanting cheap car hire in Picton.

Pick-up truck

KAYAK
The AVIS in Picton provided the truck we expected given our reservation via Kayak even after the central booking customer service POC told us we would not be getting a truck. The staff in which I interacted were helpful and friendly. The truck was super clean and ran perfectly. One of the best car rental experiences we've ever had.

Pick up in Picton was very disappointing. No service that met the InterIsland ferry schedule. We were not provided a service on the day and time for a rental pickup Very poor service not accomodating. Never heard or experienced a rental car depot that does not provide the vehicle key collection or wait in their office for their client. Very disappointed
