Top Tips for Hiring a Cargo Van in Austin

  • Suppose you need to move some items in Austin, take your family/friends on an outdoor adventure, or make a delivery. In that case, renting a cargo is advisable. In comparison to other moving trucks, Austin cargo van rentals are more practical to drive. They also offer more cargo protection than pickup trucks.
  • If you want to rent a cargo van in Austin, you must be at least 21 years. You'll pay a bit more if you're younger than 25 years. This is because most agencies that provide Austin cargo van rentals apply a young renters surcharge on young drivers. Document-wise, you must have a driver's license you've held for a minimum of 12 months, a government-issued photo ID, and a credit card with the same information as your ID. If your license isn't written in English, you must have an International Driving Permit. Ensure you get your IDP before traveling to the USA since it doesn't offer foreigners IDPs.
  • Austin is served by Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). You can rent a cargo van at this airport, given that it hosts locations for agencies with various models of Austin cargo van rentals. The agencies include Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Thrifty. Since these agencies provide vehicles based on first come, first serve, reserve your preferred cargo van as early as possible. By doing so, you won't run the risk of settling on a van you don't like as much or missing a van completely.
  • In Austin, children younger than two years must sit in rear-facing car seats when riding in a vehicle. Children between two and four years must sit in forward-facing car seats, while those between four and eight must sit in belt-positioning booster seats until they exceed 4 feet 9 inches, in which case they can use a seat belt. Austin authorities strictly apply these rules. Hence, if you plan to ride in your cargo van with your child, ensure he/she is restrained appropriately.

FAQs About Hiring a Cargo Van in Austin

  • Are there difficult times to drive a cargo van in Austin?

In Austin, driving from 7 am to 8 am and 3 pm to 5 pm is difficult. The roads most affected by congestion at these times are I-35 (the most congested stretch of highway in all of Texas) and those in the downtown area. Avoid driving at these times as much as you can, but if you have to, install a GPS. The navigation system will help you to find less congested routes quickly.

  • How can I achieve a smooth driving experience in Austin?

Although driving a cargo van in Austin may seem complicated, it is much easier if you know certain tips and tricks. In this city, the most direct routes aren't always the quickest. For example, there are periods when going around the city on Loop 360 or Ed Bluestein and then coming back to town is faster than using the direct roads entering the city. The direct routes, including MOPAC, an 11-mile tolled express lane between Cesar Chavez Street and Parmer Lane, and I-35, the expressway through the city, face enormous traffic. In case you're set to drive to Downtown Austin, familiarize yourself with the road network in this part of the city. You'll find numerous one-way streets with little road markings and signage here.

  • What is the popular cargo van brand in Austin?

The Chevrolet Express Cargo is one of the most popular Austin cargo van rentals. It features adequate storage capacity, a powerful, reliable, and economical engine, and a comfy interior. It's easy to handle since its controls are more like those of a traditional Chevrolet vehicle. This vehicle is great for light and medium-duty dry cargo moving.

  • How does KAYAK find such low cargo van hire prices?

KAYAK compares cargo van hire prices from all major car hire companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

I arrived with my reservation and they didn’t have any cars. They told me I’d need to go somewhere else. Other rental companies were booked up because of a big F1 races and the few available cars at other rental companies were triple the price. I ended up without a car for a weekend with my elderly grandmother who is 96. It’s irresponsible to confirm a reservation is there isn’t a car available!

Drop off was very hectic. First time to Huoston airport. Tried to return the car quickly as I had a flight to catch . Couldn't locate budget easily. It took me 40 minutes to figure out where exactly they were. I wish if there were clear instruction of their drop off location rather than the address they provided which accommodates dozen more rental brands. However , pickup in Austin was hassle free and exceptional.

Absolutely terrible experience the other day at this site. The Budget counter was unmanned. Sign stated to use the Avis desk, which only had one rep on duty. Significant line/wait. I was in line for 45 minutes waiting for a car, and after finally getting a car assignment, went upstairs to find that another patron had been given the same car, forcing the other patron to go BACK into line again. I returned the car with a full tank of gas and was still charged 31.97 for fuel service. I will never, ever, rent from Budget ever again.

They didn’t have any cars available once we arrived to pick up and claimed they had no way to contact me although they themselves emailed me earlier that morning asking if I was “ready for my pickup”…. Clearly I was and they weren’t. Absolutely abysmal nightmare situation regarding a car rental reservation made 3 months ago that fell through during holiday travel due to their fault entirely.

The counter associate told me as Check-in that not only did they not have any pickup trucks available, but that Hertz in central Texas does not offer same-day truck rentals. I spoke with a customer service agent at their 800 number, but she only wasted my time with non-solutions. I canceled my reservation, then rented directly with Enterprise.

I used the skipped the line feature when checking in and the car that I was given, had no lower anchors for car seats so the remedy was I had to wait in line at the desk which completely defeated the skip the line process, even though the car parked next to the original car did have low anchors. Unhappy toddlers mixed with a long line made this for a very poor experience when it could’ve just been “pick any of these in this section.”

I called to confirm my reservation and that the van was available 48 hours before then 24 hours later they called and said they were cancelling the reservation because they needed the 15 passenger vans for the F1 race at COTA. It was disappointing I made a reservation, confirmed it then was told they gave the van to the highest bidder, capitalism. I had reserved the van for an amusement park trip for 11 teenagers. I had to scramble 24 hours before to find an additional driver and 2 cars that could accommodate 13 people.

Avis did not have any cars available for anyone at the Austin airport tx location. Told they may have cars in 3-4 hours but probably not what you originally reserved. No way to do business. Went to another onsite rental car company who had available cars for a lower rate.

When I got there, they only had 18 passenger vans. They did not have the car reserved. It was 11 PM and I had my two nephews with me. They ended up giving me an electric car that was not charged. It was my first time driving an electric car, and I actually loved the way the car drove, however, we had to stop and charge it to get to my brother’s house because it only had 30% charge when we left Avis. By the time we got to my brothers it had something like 9% charge left. We charged it for 40 minutes and only gained 1%. The next day I had to park the car at the charger and leave it. I was not able to use the car at all. It only served me to get to my brothers and to get back to the airport. And I could only get back to the airport by charging it for six hours. Meanwhile, my brother had two electric chargers that we could not use because they did not have a Tesla converter plug in the car. Those plugs are free from Hyundai, but they didn’t have them so high-speed charging was out as an option. The car was dirty as well. I was told I could exchange the car, but the only Avis dealership within the range of the charge that I had had no cars. So I paid a lot of money for a car I couldn’t use.

The longest check-in line I have ever waited on in 47 years. And they did not have anything in the class of car that I had booked, and effectively downgraded me to an suv. Had I not advocated for myself for a different model at least, I would have gotten a terrible car. Generally when the class I've booked hasn't been available, I've gotten an upgrade to something better. The fact that they bumped me to something worse is a disgrace.

Was not able to pick up a rental car after getting into Austin because my flight was delayed. No arrangement was made. Had to spend money on two different Lyft rides in order to be able to pick up the car the next day. Very disappointed. Really left me in a lurch. What is the point of having a rental car if you need to use Lyft anyway? Overall, terrible experience. I will probably not use dollar again for business or personal trips

Definitely not “easy to rent”. We waited for 1.5 hours for a shuttle to pick us up from the designated area. Called the office 2 times and was told the shuttle driver should be coming by… I was then put on hold for 21 minutes before I hung up. By that time, 10 other people showed up to be picked up and they, too, called and were placed on hold or told the same thing. When the shuttle finally came and was dropped off at the office there was only one gentlemen manning the desk. The procedure was clunky and, of course, was lengthy. They didn’t have the car we rented ready so, for the sake of our time, we accepted a lesser vehicle. While the guy at the desk was friendly nought, all we kept hearing was “it’s not my fault people don’t do their jobs”… over all, it was a pretty frustrating experience. Not worth saving a few extra $ since we had to Uber from the drop off because the office was closed.

I do not recommend Easirent and will not use them again. Wait for pick up at airport was very long. Time for paperwork and processing at facility was very long and slow. It was supposed to be low cost but multiple add on costs made it not such a good deal. Car was very dirty on inside - seat was very stained to the point that I needed to get a seat cover. Checkout was fast but I got no accounting at end of rental and did not get receipt. I am waiting to see what the final cost will be. Staff people were friendly.

When I booked it, stated it was on the airport campus. It was not. We had to wait for a shuttle. One man had been waiting 45 minutes. The shuttle came and it was a 10-15 minute ride from the airport. We arrived and there were no cars. There were about 5 other parties waiting for cars. One couple had already been waiting 2.5 hours. I canceled my reservation and got an Uber. I learned my lesson and will never use a company I’m not familiar with again. It wasn’t worth saving money.
