They tried to nickel and dime me several times with add ons and stating our car wasn't available. Then offering us a different vehicle but when we agreed then told us "oh that one will be extra". They also conveniently kept pulling up the incorrect price when I got the the payment page. I had to ask them to correct it before inserting my card. The car itself was fine, the fob didn't work so we had to insert the key every time to lock and unlock the doors which was a little inconvenient.

I did not appreciate waiting so long in line then undergoing high pressure selling after an 11 hour flight. The upselling was almost too much and pressure to purchase extreme. The agents get commission on the stuff they sell and it shows. I feel sorry for our international vistors who do not have the relevent information to defend themeselves in such situations....

The service was great. The new car was clean. I had received a 2021 Sonata for my four day visit with unlimited miles. The billing was NOT transparent! You get a great quote upfront but after you return the vehicle you will be charged extra for the number of days and the gas (I was told to not fill up, my fault for assuming it was free?). This rental is off airport and has a shuttle service. I found it inconvenient at the price. There is no real savings compared to other companies.

Unfortunately Enterprise was unable to help me get a car. They have a new policy of picking up and dropping off at the same location. My flight was canceled and I needed a car to drive home. The lady behind the desk was unhelpful, the office was unfriendly, no where to sit as another employee was taking the one seat and ignoring me. I was visibly distressed but no one seemed to care.

I appreciated ordering the car online. I got a call the day before telling me that they would not likely have the vehicle, and that I would have to find another driver to have two vehicles. The vehicle was available, but instead of a 15 seater, it had room for 11, causing me to get another vehicle. I used the van for scouts, and it reeked of cigarette smoke and made me dizzy while driving it. I could not adjust the driver's seat properly, and I asked one of the agents to assist me when I got in the van, and he basically told me to adjust it myself when he checked the van. I had to hold my arms out the entire time in order to drive the vehicle. When I returned the van, I had a difficult time with the agent when I expressed these issues, and she said that she understood but I needed to pay the full amount, and did not forward me to a manager when I asked. I don't see myself ever renting from this system again.

Customer service was horrible, all I wanted to do was change pick up and drop locations 2 hr on phone to be told to start over
1.9 Horrible15 Oct 2021
Customer Service Manager, I'm writing today to bring to your attention the issues I experienced this past weekend regarding the rental car procured through Thrifty. (Confirmation/Case/Rental Record # 148071442) and to request reimbursement. On Wednesday, September 1, I arrived at the San Francisco Airport rental car center just after 12pm, observing virtually no lines at any rental agency with the exception of Thrifty/Dollar. The line at Thrifty/Dollar was approximately 40 people deep, and there were just two customer service representatives behind the desk. As I waited in line (not moving more than a few feet every 10-15 minutes), the line behind me grew significantly. One more customer service representative appeared, making it a total of three representatives helping 60+ individuals with their reservations. Having made my reservation six weeks ago, I was appalled at having to stand in line for over 90 minutes to pick up the car. I was assigned a 2020 Nissan Altima and finally left the airport to proceed in my trip. Not long thereafter, I was driving across the Bay Bridge amongst very busy traffic moving at speeds of at least 60 miles per hour, and on the Nissan's dashboard a red light began flashing as though there was a car directly in front of me that I was in danger of hitting. There were no cars ahead of me for at least four car lengths, but the Nissan's emergency system took over and braked, stalling the engine, and taking the car down to approximately 35 miles per hour, causing the cars around me to slam on their brakes. This could have caused a major accident on the bridge and was extremely terrifying to both me, and my travel companion. This continued to happen - at least four times - as I navigated to the far right lane (there is no shoulder on which to pull over on the Bay Bridge) where I proceeded to drive slowly until I could exit the freeway and make my way to my destination using city streets at slower speeds. At this point, the dashboard displayed an error message (which you can see in the attached photograph—or if no image can be attached can be provided upon request) that stated: “Forward Driving Aids Temporarily Disabled / Front Sensor Blocked / See Owner’s Manual” of which there was none. As if all of this were not bad enough, I proceeded to call Thrifty customer service when I arrived at my destination (around 4:30pm) to request a replacement car. After over an hour on hold, the representative first indicated that I would need to return to SFO, which was absolutely not an option, being more than an hour away. They then indicated that I would need to make my way to Oakland Airport to obtain a replacement car. I explained that this was also not an option, as it was 40 minutes in the wrong direction, and that I had important events that I needed to attend that evening (starting at 5:30pm). By looking at a map of the local area, I discovered that there was a Hertz rental office just a few miles from where I was, so suggested that a replacement vehicle be made available there. The customer service representative I was speaking with indicated that an "equivalent vehicle" may not be available at that location. At this point, Thrifty's main priority should have been getting the unsafe, malfunctioning vehicle off the road and putting me into a safe car - regardless of whether it was an equivalent vehicle or not! After spending well over 2 1/2 hours on the phone - much of which was on hold and which cut into an important dinner - I was finally informed that someone would be coming to collect the malfunctioning and dangerous vehicle, and that they would drop off a replacement. I received a text indicating that AAA would be there in an hour to pick up the car (text also available upon request). I was finally able to attend the dinner, later returning to the home I was staying at, only to find that the Nissan was still there. It had not been towed, nor had a replacement been provided. Furthermore, I had not received any updates as to the status of either action. It wasn't until 9:30pm that I received a call from AAA informing me that they were unable to tow the car. So, after wasting more than four hours of my day -- waiting in line for over 90 minutes to get the car to begin with, and being on a call with Thrifty customer service for over 2 1/2 hours -- I still had no solution to the issue, which is totally unacceptable. At that time in the evening, I realized that there was no option but to wait until the morning to try and get this resolved. At 8:30am the following day (Thursday, September 2) I began calling customer service again. I was put on hold for an extremely long period of time, and finally had to have my travel companion take over so that I could get ready for the day ahead. By the time she was able to speak with a manager it was close to 10am, and we had less than two hours to get to an appointment that was an hour away. She again asked to have me go to one of the airport to pick up another car, which would have made us hours late for our appointment, and which she reiterated was not an option. She was also told that the local rental offices may not have an equivalent vehicle available, to which she responded that it was Thrifty's responsibility to put us in a safe vehicle regardless of the type of car. The customer service representative was finally able to procure a replacement car at the Hertz location just a few miles from where we were located. While this ensured that we were able to make our appointment almost on time, it is worth noting that the replacement automobile (also a white 2020 Nissan Altima) was filthy inside and out, the gas tank was less than 3/4 full, and the brakes on the car squeaked and squealed constantly. I can't say that we felt safe driving it, but there was little choice at this point. I'm appalled at the entirety of my dealings with Thrifty. In total, I spent more than 7 hours of my time dealing with this issue, which should have been treated as a major risk/liability to your organization. It is unfathomable to me that this would not have been immediately escalated and resolved. Out of respect for the danger my travel companion and I were put in, as well as the amount of time we spent getting this resolved, I'm requesting a refund of the rental fees paid. I appreciate your timely response. Sincerely, Jesse Brodkey

Line at counter was >45mins. To add insult to injury, folks were being told that the car they reserved was not available and they needed to wait another 45mins. Upon seeing this pattern, I booked a car at another company that had vehicles on my phone and got out of line. I was not going to make my wife and 9 mo. old baby sit in a crowded rental car center for an hour plus when we had 2 hour drive already ahead of us.
1.9 Horrible18 Aug 2021
The line was HUGE. There weren't enough people working to handle the volume of people there. After waiting an hour in line, my husband was told that the car we reserved wasn't actually available unless we wanted to wait an additional hour. (I reserved the pick up for 2:00 pm, and this was already 4:00 pm by the time he got up to the counter.) They charged us an extra $80/day for renting a minivan instead, because it was the only thing available at the time he reached the counter. We were traveling with three small children who had been sitting on a plane already, then had to wait even longer to get a rental car. This was pretty unacceptable to me and I was really disappointed in the whole experience.

This Hertz pickup/drop-off location was horrible! We arrived early in the morning for pickup and there were already a number of people waiting in line for cars - which they ran out of! After waiting 45 minutes and overhearing a number of other disgruntled people, we were given a downgraded compact car and a measly $10 off for the "wait" inconvenience. However, Hertz never informed us that there was an additional $12 valet fee for picking up this car at this particular location - the said it was due to it being located inside the Marriott hotel - so it wound up costing us more anyway. Not the fault of Kayak by any means, but this was an awful experience!

No credit card? No rentalI’m local to the area, and without a round trip airline ticket, they would not let me rent a vehicle with my debit card.

The car at pickup had almost empty gas but on request, the agent filled it up.National should provide pick up service within a few miles.

Car was dirty, dented, and overdue for an oil change. Was hard to see in the dark garage, but once you got into the sunlight you could see a few dents, and also how dirty the car was. Then, a few miles in the car started saying it was overdue for an oil change, that makes me wonder how well they check these cars over when it's already OVERdue! Not too thrilled about it.

Would have been perfect if not for the child seatsEverything but the child seatsCar seats were really bad value for $13/day per piece (we needed 2). They were the cheapest possible seats, it would have been cheaper to just buy them. There was no good solution for a 42lb kid - too young for a booster seat, too big for the car seat. We had to shoehorn her into the available seat. Pickup of the car was good, but the person in charge of car seats was rude and seemed annoyed by my request to see available seats.

Watch your locationIt's my own fault for not investigating closer, but I was under the impression that my San Francisco rental would be picked up at the airport. When I arrived at said airport with my husband, two kids, 4 suitcases, 4 backpacks, and 2 car seats, I was informed by a rude National employee that my rental was to be picked up at the train station, which was at least 30 minutes away, and she could do nothing to help me. I ended up renting a car from Alamo by calling and reserving a car on the spot. I am unlikely to use Kayak again.

Convenient downtown location to those of us who do not want to go to the airport. The trunk latch broke when I got my luggage out upon arriving at my destination. I had to take a shoelace out of my sneaker to tie the trunk shut!!

I arrived 3 hours after my reservation began and after waiting approximately 45 minutes in line I was told that they were sold of cars despite already charging. Caveat emptor! They could have had a car for my reservation? They literally stole my money.

drop off was decentwaited forever (1 hr to pick up) , the car was cleaned but some objects were left behind from previous renters, charges and rates were not super easy to decide on. I had to do a lot of the work I expected the staff to do (walk around the car and mark chips & digs). very slow!

Drop off was easy but pick up took an hour.I didn’t receive the SUV. While I still received a car, it was annoying to get a call saying they couldn’t accommodate me with what I purchased in advance. Additionally, it took an hour to pick up the car.

Poor transparency in contract & inspection. Car was not fully clean or properly maintained. One hubcap was attached with zip ties. Car handling became irregular on freeway & I had to call company for roadside assistance. No help was available for over 3 hours. Had to rent another car to get home.

Car hire excess insurance in San Francisco

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some San Francisco car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in San Francisco.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your San Francisco car rental.

Top tips for hiring a car in San Francisco

  • While driving around the city of San Francisco can prove tricky because of its steep hills and crowded streets, renting a car is a great option for travelers looking to explore other destinations outside the city. Driving is the best way to get to nearby places that are a must in every itinerary, such as the Bay Area, Muir Woods, and Sausalito. For an unforgettable wine tasting experience, drive to Napa Valley, which is only about 50 miles away from San Francisco.
  • All the big car hire agencies can be found at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Car Rental Center, which is accessible from all the airport terminals by taking the AirTrain Blue Line service. AirTrain stations are located in all the terminals at the airport. There is also a free shuttle service from the SFO hire Car Center to other off-site hire car agencies.
  • San Francisco is known for its steep hills, and the city center is filled with packed roads, one-way streets, and expensive parking, so you might want to avoid driving in that area. When parking on one of the city's hills, make sure to turn the wheels towards the curb when the car is facing downhill, and turn them away from the curb when the car is facing uphill -- and don't forget to use your parking brake.
  • San Francisco is one of the worst cities in the United States when it comes to traffic congestion. Rush hours can easily add one or more hours to your travel time, so take that into consideration and avoid driving into or out of the city between 7:30 and 9 a.m., and 3:30 and 7 p.m. Because of its geographical features, SF can get quite foggy and windy, so make sure you take extra precautions while driving if the weather conditions aren't great.
