Hakodate is a popular city on Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, with many tourists visiting each year. For this reason, the roads are normally very busy, so a small car would be beneficial for you. You could opt for a Suzuki Wagon R, which will help you with parking and navigating busy roads. However, if you want to take your car out into the mountainous countryside, you will want something with a bit more bite. For instance, a Nissan X-Trail has more grip for steep roads and is suitable for a range of terrains.

When driving in Japan, it’s important you don’t speed; otherwise, you are at risk of accidents or being pulled over and fined by the local authorities. When you’re driving on a motorway, the maximum speed you can go is 100 km/h. If you’re on other rural roads which aren’t motorways, then the top speed is 80 km/h. When you’re driving in Hakodate and other urban areas, you must go no faster than 50 km/h. The speed limit varies in cities, so ensure you keep an eye out for the signs. For example, outside schools, the speed limit is only 30 km/h.
