Pros:The Kayak Lodge was a very pleasant surprise. We had to cancel our reservation at a VERY expensive resort in Manuel Antonio for logistical reasons and booked the further away Kayak Lodge for a greatly reduced cost ($150/night vs. $400/night). The room, grounds, facilities, common areas, and pool were immaculate. My daughter said that it was the first place we had stayed during the trip (and we stayed at some very fine places) where she felt comfortable walking barefoot in the room. The owner (Marlene) and her staff were friendly and attentive to our needs. When we needed a late check out, we got it. The Manuel Antonio guide Marlene arranged for us (Millia (sp?)) was the best guide we had in Costa Rica! (Millia suggested & arranged a catamaran trip for the next day that was also a LOT of fun). Although the taxi to and from Quepos was about $10 one way (and a little more for Manuel Antonio) it was readily available and what we spent on taxis was more than made up for by what we saved on the room! Breakfast is included (indeed I think Kayak is deemed to be a B&B) and Marlene and her assistants prepared a delicious spread - complete with homemade guava jam! Also included gallo pinto, watermelon, pineapple, fried plantain, eggs, toast, etc. Mangrove tour was also fun. Highly recommend the Kayak Lodge.
Cons:It was a little far from the "action" but we had dinner in Quepos at the marina both nights and don't feel like we missed much by being a little farther out!

Pros:Don Bernard and Doña Marlene are fantastic and all accommodating. The rooms are clean and the food is fresh and good. AC works goof but you have to reset it each time you get back in the room.
Cons:You've got to have a car. We depended on taxis, but they hooked us up with Michael who took us everywhere we wanted to go. With that said, we couldn't walk anywhere, there's absolutely nothing near the place other the mangrove right next door. The air conditioning goes out when the door is open and you have to turn it back on when you get back in the room.
