The Avalon Hotel on Catalina Island - Avalon - Building
1
9.5 Excellent (243 reviews)
S$ 397+
Overview Reviews
When you a stay at The Avalon Hotel on Catalina Island in Avalon, you'll be by the ocean, within a 5-minute walk of Catalina Island Museum and Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The front desk is staffed during limited hours.
6.7 Good
Pros: The breakfast was adequate for a continental-style breakfast in the back courtyard. We liked the location of Avalon Hotel which is somewhat away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Avalon and all the tourists. We are not sure that the price (about $400/night) was on point since the building is somewhat aged, the rooms aged (our air conditioner leaked), and the hotel quite small. The hotel is also located right next to a house would could properly be described as a dump.
Cons: A lower price near $300/night. And some consideration for using the rooftop facility for wine & cheese.
7.7 Good
Pros: Nice hotel. Great location.
Cons: The hotel card keys didn't work, I wasn't locked out and the night manager wasn't available via the black phone for about an hour after I started trying to call him.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff. Very thoughtful and helpful. Great rooftop patio - excellent sitting and view
Cons: No complaints
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I loved the rooftop deck, we went up every evening and enjoyed the view.
Cons: We had a room on the first floor facing the street which was kind of loud from all the carts, but can’t complain because the view of the ocean was beautiful, maybe if we were on the upper levels it wouldn’t have been so loud, still loved our room..
9.6 Excellent
Pros: They provide very nice breakfasts and had an excellent wine and cheese event on Friday evening. The room with refrigerator, microwave, vault for valuables exceeded my expectations. The balcony with its chairs provided a very beautiful view of the bay. Upstairs on the 4th floor, the deck had an amazing view of the ocean, bay and hillside. But probably the best selling point of the hotel was the staff (Laurie, Evelyn and Rock). Very professional and friendly staff.
Cons: Stairs. An elevator would be nice (I'm disabled)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful garden courtyard with fountain and koi pond was perfect for happy hour, breakfast and relaxing. Communication in advance of our arrival was responsive and helpful. Checkin was quick and smooth. Overall, the staff was perfect! Thanks to all for making our stay a delightful experience in a true Old California hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is in a great location. It is beautifully maintained and decorated true to its craftsman style. Wonderful little courtyard to enjoy continental breakfast. There is 24 hr coffee and tea station, plus snacks for you. We had a balcony room and I loved sitting out there. Evelyn is such an asset as one of The Avalon's staff. She even insisted on carrying my luggage up the 3 flights of stairs to our room. (no elevator) I dont care about the stairs it's an amazing place to stay. They gave us a great bottle of wine for our Anniversary, which we enjoyed on the beautiful rooftop terrace. We will stay there again.
Cons: They had a clitch in the reentry to the hotel after the door was locked at night. We had to wait outside for 30 minutes, before the night manager let us in. ( he was asleep and was very grumpy)It only happened once and the staff really tried to go out of their way to make it right.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Rooms were compact but very efficiently planned.
Cons: Lack of an elevator required hiking up and down two flights of steep stairs.

3.0 Mediocre
Pros: it was close to the beach and to the attractions.
Cons: no wifi at all, small bathroom, one of the staff members had a disgusting attitude.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Location, and it was fairly clean.
Cons: Tiny room, TV is on far left side of the room and hurt my neck. Continental Breakfast was a lie. Pictures they show do not represent the standard queen room. Bathroom was the size of a closet. Not worth the $----/night that I paid after taxes.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Updated historic property is centrally located.
Cons: Adequate but basic continental breakfast.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a cute hotel. I liked the tree in the lobby. Bed was great.
Cons: I did not like having to walk up the stairs with luggage-no elevator. You need a dumb waiter to haul the luggage. The shower was too small for me to take a shower. I am short and the shower head would have wet me all over and I just washed my hair. No shower for me. I opened the large window to a wall. I did not expect to see the ocean, but not a wall. It could be a decorated wall. I had to ask the lobby clerk how to turn on the heater because the room was so cold. The thermostat the clerk thought would work didn't work. So he turned on the wall heater. I didn't know how to turn off the wall heater. More directions are needed. The TV guide needs updating. None of the TV numbers matched the stations.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location! And easy check-in. Staff was flexible during the triathalon event.
Cons: a bit odd to have the sink in the room, but I understand that it is an old building. It would have been nice to have access to wifi, and our TV did not have all the channels listed.

Pros: Breakfast provided food needed to start the day. I especially liked the fact the facility had several outdoor spots to eat.

7.0 Good
Pros: Our room abutted a street and we heard the noise of traffic all night long. Our room looked nothing like the pictures or resembled the description put out by the hotel. They are small and while clean - it was a disappointment. Trying to get a late check out (which I requested 3 times) was a pain - just say yes or no. The location was good.
Cons: The traffic noise was a problem. The staff was not unfriendly, but only one desk clerk in the morning was truly welcoming. She was the one responsible for setting up the buffet breakfast. See above.
6.8 Good
Pros: The terrace was great, although it opens at 10:00 AM.

After 20 minutes, I asked out the door if they were aware of the time & the volume! With posted signs everywhere, staff?!?

Pros: The hotel was in a good location. I liked the balcony on he 3 rd floor.
Cons: It was rather rundown, I could tell from ad it needed updating but it was more rundown than I expected. The biggest thing I ddnt like was that there was no AC It is one of those things I thought most hotels have. I was wrong! It was HOT.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We ate ten donuts. No one complained. We were given a free upgrade to a bigger room without asking, so we would not have to walk up the stairs, since we are seniors. Best of all, we love the Victorian old world charm of the 1880 Hotel Catalina.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our room was ready at 10am even though when we booked check in wasn't until 2pm. The coffee and donuts were a nice treat. We will definitely stay here again.
7.5 Good
Pros: Room was clean and had plenty of room for our things. Bed was comfortable. The Windows provided wonderful fresh air and blackout curtains were very effective. Each floor had a patio/balcony with plenty of seating that was very pleasant and had a partial few of the harbor. I'm not certain how many other people were staying on our floor, but we did not hear and hallway or other room noises within our third floor room. Request for hypoallergenic pillows was acknowledged right away and accommodated.
Cons: It was a bit uphill getting to the hotel and while it was easy to see the sign from the boat it was not at all visible from the main street. Have your map out! Stairs were wide, but there were a lot of them - ask for lower rooms if you tend to get winded. The desk clerks were not rude and did offer to keep our luggage in the lobby after we checked out but we had to wander around on our own and discover the amenities - no mention was made of them at check in, even though there were pastries, juice machines, and a microwave available for quests.
8.5 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: Bathrooms
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Always nice and friendly staff. Upgraded our room for no extra cost. Very happy second stay with Hotel Catalina. :)
6.0 Good
Pros: The place was cute.
Cons: We had a 2 room cottage. Heater in one room did not work. It had a jack and Jill bathroom to connect both rooms . If I was a child there would be no problem going from one room thru bathroom thru toilet room to other room. The door openings connecting both rooms were I say less than 2' and tight turns. Normal doors are 3'. Walk in shower was quite small also. I think they need to replace their beds as I felt some springs.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very cute. Loved being on the veranda
Cons: You need new mattresses. The ones in my room were stiff and worn out
5.0 Okay
Pros: The jack and Jill rooms for a family. The donuts are fun!
Cons: The family was looking forward to the spa which unfortunately was disappointing as the water level was almost half empty causing the jets to splash in your face not to mention your body could not get warm being out of the water the entire time. Also the shower was extremely small making it hard for my 6’3 husband to shower comfortably (maybe make this more clear to the customer). The toilet had problems flushing all weekend, super uncomfortable. People smoking outside their room made the cigarette smell come into our cottage in the middle of the night making my son and husband have asthma the rest of the night.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great, super helpful staff, flexible and personal service. Location perfect. Breakfast in morning a very nice treat.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: We were pleasantly surprised when we made same day reservations and got such a nice room for cheap on a weekend. We came in on a late ferry and got a call on the way in from Jack at the desk asking when we would be coming in so he could send a car to pick us up. Check in was easy and everyone on the staff was really nice. The best thing about the hotel was its location. Steps from the beach and everything else in Avalon.
Cons: The room was nice and clean, nothing fancy but it did feel like it was on a slant. It was no big deal but kind of quirky. We would stay here again for sure.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly staff. Location was great

5.0 Okay
Pros: The staff are very friendly and helpful and the breakfast here is delicious. The view of the room is good.
Cons: The furniture, such as carpet, desk and chair, is a little old and there are not very clean. The sockets are not easy to use, because they are a little bit loose. When I took a shower, the water was not warm enough at any time. Sometimes, it became cold.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The view Location Stove, pans, silverware, dishes, glasses Even the hot tub in my room had a view The service was excellent Continental breakfast included pancakes
Cons: The price

Pros: Value for money.
Cons: Umrella's for lounge chairs perhaps. Not critical.
6.0 Good
Pros: Room was clean, but it could use some repairs.
Cons: Better repairs
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Staff was friendly. They came and picked us up at the Catalina Express Terminal
Cons: Everything about the hotel was outdated - the rooms felt like you walked into the 80s. Roaches in the room. Air conditioner didn’t work and there were no other rooms available to move to. Kind of off the main road and uphill.
1.0 Poor
Pros: The only thing good about this property was the view from our room balcony other than that the property is self was terrible the room was dirty the air conditioner made a rattling noise the staff here told us that the internet will be back on but the internet was out for the entire duration of our four-day stay over all the facility itself was a total waste of time and not worth the value of our money we ask for the owner to contact us so we can discuss the duration of our stay and what we were upset with and the owner never called us the internet never came back on and overall it was a terrible experience is never again will we stay here
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was wonderful and very accommodating. Definitely will be back. The room was comfortable and spacious.
Cons: N/A
8.0 Excellent
Pros: the personnel at the front was very accommodating and helpful.
Cons: More pillows and the air conditioner from above unit was dripping condensation on our unit which was making a dripping noise. put towel out there to stop sound. did notify the front when checking out as it only occurred the last night we were there.

6.7 Good
Pros: The breakfast was adequate for a continental-style breakfast in the back courtyard.

7.0 Good
Pros: Our room abutted a street and we heard the noise of traffic all night long.
Cons: The sounds of people from other rooms were very loud (thin walls with no sound insulation), the barn doors at all room entries sliding open and shut could be heard every time other guests came in or out.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was great. Nice to have complementary bicycles.
Cons: Air conditioner smelled like wet feet. Coffee was absolutely horrible. Continental breakfast could have been better.
5.0 Okay
