10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very friendly and and helpful. He provided us a lot of information about the area. We stayed in the “moon villa”, very comfy, has everything you need. Would definitely come again!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent host, the best I've encountered. Ken was all smiles to welcome us despite us arriving very late at night. He was also super responsive in our communications prior to arrival. Upon arrival, he gave us a map of the local area and gave suggestions on places of attractions and recommended restaurants. The loft was spacious enough for six of us and spotless, with really nice touches of owl and cat decorations around the loft. If you have a car, it's only 2-3 minutes drive (or probably 10min walk) to the centre of town with plenty of restaurants, a supermarket and Family Mart. Super highly recommended.
Cons: Nothing!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner came to pick us all at the train station, explained in details the location including good restaurant for our diner. The house was independant with a view on a nice little garden that we unfortunately had not occasion to enjoy. We left the place after a night of snow which made the scene just great. We highly recommend the location and owner to anyone travelling in the region
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are extremely kind and friendly. The house is super clean and the bed is really comfortable. Highly recommend !
Cons: It would be better if the direction is clearly marked to the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners are so accommodating and gave me a map with options of places to go and eat. They ran a hot bath every evening and the place is quietly tucked away but walkable to the temples and shrines.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The host were lovely and extremely helpful! They are 3 generations living onsite. If you need anything, they are quick to respond. Cleanliness is great! Size of room considered big by japan standards! Onsen is a great plus after a Long day out. Found out that it is private use which is even better!
Cons: Breakfast can be inclusive considering the price of the stay. Japanese breakfast option was not available. Location is okay, can be a distance when cold.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Super service, very kind and nice owner, excellent hospitality, good breakfast. If you want to experience Japanese family atmosphere, this is the right place.
7.9 Good
Pros: The area place was fantastic, cleanliness and bueatiful. Onsen is Ok. Very nice breakfast. Good services.
Cons: My room for 4 people is a little too small. For me it is not fit with the price.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast super yummy and fresh...location very near to old town and easy find the restaurant ( Must self-drive)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was great, location was great (not stuck in the middle of the tourist area). There are enough things within walking distance so that a car wouldn't be needed, but renting a car certainly gives a lot more flexibility. The bathing facilities are quite nice. The staff is quite nice.
Cons: The in-room bathrooms are old and need updating (they are your typical 80s era prefabricated bathroom boxes). The bathrooms are also frigid cold during the winter since there is an exhaust that cannot be closed. The rooms themselves are fair to fine, but would be overall much nicer if the bathrooms were updated. The bathing facilities seem to be in heavy use during high season, so when the use indicator light turns off, you kind of need to make a mad dash before someone else enters (there are two private bathing rooms). Some sort of time limit might be good to implement, or scheduling system. Parking lot is teeny and make require tandem parking. Not sure if they hang onto keys if someone gets blocked in.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great privat bath!!!!!! And overall very nice conditions. Free hot water/tea/coffee. Very nice stay
Cons: Unbelievable traffic in Nikko ((( but everything at hotel was really great.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: A good place to stay when visiting Nikko. It is close to the World Heritage temples and bean curd skin restaurants. The waterfall is about 30 mins away. The breakfast is excellent.
Cons: My tatami room was a little small for 4 people. The bathroom’s fan was not very strong and it didn’t remove the moisture fast enough.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Revage was beautiful and the staff were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we could have stayed longer.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast and the host and owner, Kondo-san, was very friendly and helpful.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff. We were even driven to the train station when we left. The Onsen was very nice and clean and availability was good. Very big breakfast consisting of a good mixture of Japanese and International food. We walked from the hotel to the temples (1,5km). As the bus stop for the bus to the mountain areas is close to the hotel we could even combine both in one (long) day.
Cons: Price was rather high due to National holiday and the bathroom/shower rather small, but the Onsen made up for it.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are very friendly and provide a 'butler service' in a tradition Japanese way. We are surprised that staffs came out to welcome us when we still 20 metres away from the hotel. We stayed in the begining of February which probably is not the peak season so the whole staying feels very private and enjoyable. We even have our own dining room. I informed the hotel this is my husband's first trip to Japan to celebrate his birthday. We got a special staff bring in entertainment and souvenir as a gift after our dinner to celebrate, which is very nice of the hotel. The dinner is about 12 course set menu, very lovely! Overall, the experience is great and we would love to come back here again.

Pros: Staff was helpful and friendly. The lady was super nice to let me check-in early as outside was cold and raining. Other things from private outdoor onsen to the two meals were also amazing.
Cons: It's in a remote town without restaurants or convenient stores nearby. It'd be great if they can offer more choices of light refreshments other than beer and chips during the stay.

Fantastic Japanese set-menu supper & breakfast served in own private dining room. Easy bus journey from Nikko station to hotel - 90 mins of glorious scenery up winding mountain road. Easy bus journey to sight seeing spots
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved this place. The value for money for service, food and facilities was exceptional. The meals were a beautiful, traditional experience and the staff were incredibly warm and gracious. The private outdoor onsen (free for use, staff keep track of when it's occupied, they request you use it for no longer than an hour) was a wonderful experience after a long, cold day of hiking in November.
Cons: Nothing! The sulphur smell of the onsen water can be a shock to the system -- but it's the real deal.

Pros: Authentic experience
Cons: Quite far and hard to get to
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location, property & experience. Well worth the cost & effort to get there.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely premises, cute setting across the bridge for dinner. Some nice little homey restaurants in the surrounding village too.
Cons: Takes a bit of time to get to...not that close to Toby-Nikko Station or Kinugawa but it’s worth the trek for those looking for a true getaway. Lots of beautiful nature nearby too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great from the moment we walked through the gate... The Japanese atmosphere, the staff, the food, the building, the room... nothing wrong There is even private onsen at very fair price if you have tattoos
Cons: The journey from Tokyo was a little bit stressful with train + bus it would be easier with a pick up service. But travel in Japan is easy and people are always willing to help
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The building is historical and well preserved. The room was very clean and spacious for 2 people. It had a nice view of river and the opposite river bank. All necessary amenities, onsen pouch, and sets of yukata with extra layer for cold weather were provided. We were offered welcome drinks (tea & coffee) and Japanese snacks on arrival and were brought to sit in the lobby area which has a beautiful river view. The dining room for dinner required a short walk on an old but sturdy photogenic vine bridge crossing a river and a few steps. Guests staying in the same room had their own table and each person had their own meal set prepared. The meal (irori dinner) was fantastic, delicious, and well-prepared. The staff would help when we were not sure how to cook/eat them. Breakfast was prepared and served in another venue. It’s traditional Japanese breakfast with local produce and served in buffet style. So make sure you come a bit early or right on time for breakfast! The onsen was great. We paid for a private onsen, 45min-session per room at 1,100yen. It could be booked at checkin. Only 2 of 3 private onsens were available at the time we stayed (one close for renovation). There were 7 sessions (3 before dinner and 4 after dinner) to choose from. I also recommend doing a public onsen (it opens at 2pm so you can dip yourself even before checking-in) if you don’t mind. The view and experience were much better than the private one. Staffs were friendly and nice even though there was a language barrier with limit English but they were eager to help and chat with you. The ryokan is right next to the bus stop. It’s very easy find but might not be quite easy to access from Tokyo by public transport. It required us only 1 transit with limited express Revaty but would be more if go by local trains.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Honke Bankyu gave us an authentic and spiritual Japanese experience that we’ll cherish forever. As a registered historical building built in 1666, the ryokan exuded history and character. Exceptionally well kept, it was very clean with great detail in the interior design. The open-air onsen sits upon the river, making for a magical and unparalleled experience. Crossing the bridge to an outstanding traditional Japanese dinner gave us a holistic experience, and one we couldn’t have had elsewhere. The staff were very attentive and warm from check in to check out. Thank you, HB, for a wonderful stay!
Cons: It took a while to get there by bus, but was absolutely worth it
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and very old traditional Japanese house, you will brief history with samurai pictures on the wall Very nice onsen, also private for a small fee Good kaiseki dinner experience Overall great and recommended stay
Cons: Very nice stay
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff, very good dinner and ambience. Gives a real feel of the Japanese culture
Cons: We were given a room on the ground floor and thru the night there were creaking sound of footsteps from the floor above. This was possibly because our room was right next to the private onsen and hence a lot of movement late night, but it would be good to know about it in advance

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and welcoming and they also had English speaking staff to explain everything to us at arrival. It was our first time at an onsen, we enjoyed the experience and the facilities provided. Onsen was lovely and hot and we were the only ones in while we were there due to off season. Had the kaiseki dinner as well which was delicious and well explained in English. Location was spot on, 5 min walk from the bus stop (Stop 7- Shinkyo) where you can get a bus to train station and Chuzenji falls. It is within walking distance to the temples and shrines, so top marks for that!
Cons: A little bit pricey but couldn’t fault anything else.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic meals! We simply love the yuba and tofu making experience over kaiseki dinner and the breakfast was superb. Thank you! Your front desk staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Thank you Raki for the excellent English language service support. The shuttle service was great - we appreciate it very much. Will definitely choose to stay here again.
Cons: Everything was good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Convenient, free ride to station, good travelling recommendations, nice food, comfortable and clean, great views from room.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Central location to all the sights. Delicious kaiseki dinner. Friendly staff - they have some English-speaking staff, which made our stay easier. The garden was also well-maintained.
Cons: The property is a little on the older side for the price, but I figure we were paying for the location.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nikko Hoshino Yado is quiet but perfectly located to visit the World Heritage shrines and forest and the beautiful town of Nikko. The ryokan accommodation was very comfortable and the Japanese garden is an extra treat. The staff and service were exception and the kaizeki dinners and japanese breakfasts were exceptional. Highly recommended.
Cons: No negatives to list
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was our first stay in a Japanese Ryokan. We organized the pickup from the train station before or arrival via email with the hotel and they were super responsive and reliable. Once we arrived at the hotel, we were welcomed in perfect English. Everything was explained to us in no rush, so we had plenty of time to understand how to wear the Yukata and how to use the Onsen. The fantastic service lasted all the way through our stay! Our room had a beautiful view. Overall, I would say the pictures don't do the place justice, it was a lot prettier than expected. Everything was clean, from the room to the Onsen and restaurant. We enjoyed a superb Kaiseki menu for diner and a delicious breakfast. Our recommendation is that you read a little about Kaiseki and local Nikko food beforehand as the menu was only available in Japanese. We had lots of fun with Google translate, though :D ... The futon beds were cozy and comfortable. Can absolutely recommend and would love to stay again!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Quiet, serene hotel in a fantastic location. The hotel is located just a short stroll to many temples and shrines. There's also a bus stop nearby where you can catch the bus to see sights outside of the immediate area (Chuzenji Lake, etc). Dinner is an epic kaiseki experience.

Pros: The owners are so accommodating and gave me a map with options of places to go and eat. They ran a hot bath every evening and the place is quietly tucked away but walkable to the temples and shrines.
