Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Discover this wonderful inn! The most beautiful place we are in Japan. An irreproachable welcome, the place is sublime and very well maintained. The breakfast was very good ! We arrived in the rain, we woke up to a snowy landscape. Two night of dreams. We will come back for sure!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The lounge area with the fire the dinner is really tasty, the private onsen (small but really cool)
Cons: For Western people the bed is pretty small..
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! The food was out of this world.
Cons: Saying goodbye
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was extraordinary. The food was some of the best I've had in Japan, the owners were so friendly and welcoming. The next time I'm in Takayama there's no where else I would rather stay!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing! It’s a little hidden treasure did not want to leave the place
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole experience. The shuttle bus, the fire place, the location, the cleanliness and the hospitality was amazing.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is on the mid-hill, outside is the trees and some house. It was snowing at night and in the early morning, so the view is good. The breakfast is great. Although the wash room and bath room is outside the rest room, they are clean and tidy. Since only 3 families are staying at the same night, there is no problem on using the WC and bath room, no need to wait. The room size is ok, we can open all the luggage. The common room is good and comfortable, with a wood fire heating.
Cons: The hotel can pick you up and drop you to the bus station, but without a car, it is not so convenience. The breakfast is so good, so the dinner should be not bad. But because we did not order the dinner, we didn't try it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This wonderful place is so beautiful. The furniture, the staff, the food - everything! Out of all the places I have stayed around the world, this one was very special. The private onsen was so good. You must eat in the restaurant, the home made meals are to die for. We loved the 6 course dinner! All the staff are so caring and spend all day looking after you. The service was exceptional. We will be back
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Words can not adequately describe how wonderful this place is. The setting was incredible. Although it was a fair distance to the city centre they offered a complimentary shuttle service to and from the city centre. The building itself is gorgeous. The rooms were more than just comfortable. The lounge and wood burning fireplace was a great place to unwind and read and hang out. I enjoyed the dinner and it was worth every dollar. The staff are the epitome of hospitality professionals. I will definitely be coming back to stay here. It was a perfect stay. It’s a very special place.
Cons: There’s nothing wrong with this place.

Cons: We loved everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful ryokan. We enjoyed everything and each moment: the location is beautiful and so peaceful. The welcome of all the staff makes you feel comfortable, one man speaks english very well and all the other people try their best to communicate in english. The dinner was outstanding, amazing, it was served in a private room with a garden view (what a surprise) and they provided us a written english menu :) ..the breakfast was as a second dinner!!! good relaxing private onsen wich you can book for 1 hour. The beedrom was lovely, warm with a fantastic view. The futon was very comfortable and we had no issue to sleep. They prepare the bedroom while we had the dinner..they left a snack, biscuits and tea. The place is very quite and you can really relax and appreciate the time there. Fantastic experience , we really hope to go back one day.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was terrific
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast is incredible delicious, they can even make them different if you stay for multiple days.
Cons: It's really hard to get to Hidatakayama, but if you stay there, I recommend staying there for multiple days. And the price is pretty expensive though.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is really beautiful, we were back for the second time and all was perfect as we remember! The staff is very kind and the food is super good, and it was served in a private dining room. The room was lovely and warm, and had all what we need to make tea and have a relaxing time...We enjoied every moment and we will be back again for sure!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! I had a magical, wonderful stay here, and it was perfect and beautiful. I will be back some day!
Cons: As I have a back injury, I would have just liked 2 Japanese mats to sleep on instead of one, but I imagine I could have requested this, (had I known), and they would have very likely obliged.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything. This is around my 8th time staying in a ryokan in Japan but Yatsusankan definitely impressed me. Thank you for having us and giving us such a wonderful ryokan experience. Dinner was exquisite and I loved a lot.
Sumiyoshi Ryokan - Takayama - Building

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Out of all the places we stayed during three weeks in Japan, Sumiyoshi Ryokan was our favorite. We opted for both breakfast (you can choose between Japanese and Western) and dinner, and the food was incredible, with new surprises every day! The staff are so kind and welcoming, we felt like we were a part of the family! The facilities are comfortable, beautiful and kept spotless. The futons were so comfy and cozy and there is tea in your room so you can make as many pots as you like. The large hot tub (no reservation needed, if you’re using it you lock the door) was fantastic, you are able to open the window while soaking and hear the river rushing by, so relaxing! The location couldn’t be better- right on the river, across from the morning market and in the heart of all of the sights of Takayama. Tons of restaurants, cafes and shops around, and less than a mile to the station which was great for day trips. The taxi to Sumiyoshi is only 700 yen. I highly recommend Sumiyoshi, you will love staying here!
Cons: Everything was great!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff and an amazing stay in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The Japanese breakfast was a must! I'm vegan and my parents are veggie and they were very accommodating.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Probably the most enjoyable stay of my entire trip in Japan thus far! The Ryokan is located next to the main river and is owned by this sweet elderly couple. Both were extremely hospitable and friendly. We were greeted with some tidbits and matcha tea. The dinner and breakfast were phenomenal! The serving is huge that's why they told us not to eat a lot while we were walking around the town in the afternoon. The Ryokan has 2 private bathrooms which you can soak yourself in. At night, they will bring out the Futon bed out which is extremely comfortable. Best sleep I ever had during my trip. I will definitely recommend this to other travellers and can't wait to head back as well!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Antique traditional inn that is soo neat and amazingly maintained by senior citizens who were so helpful and accomodating to all our last minute needs, yummy japaneese breakfast, too..strategic location also! Highly recommended in Takayama

Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. 9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was a 20 mins walk from the bus/train station with some uphill parts. Remember to arrange for transfer (arrival and departure date only). All staffs were superb (check in staff speaks good English). You can get your coffee/tea fix in the common area downstairs. Love the onsen bath which is alternately switched daily between male and female. The most amazing part of the stay was the food....the dinner/breakfast spread was just amazing served by motherly Japanese ladies (you can feel the pride and love when the chefs prepared them)..I would come to stay here just for the food.
Cons: The room is clean but average looking...maybe a bit old but this is not a big problem. Highly recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was excellent! The staff was very nice and the facilities were beautiful.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was amazing! The baths were clean and warm. The staff was friendly and communicative, they even gave us a printed photo to commemorate our stay. Overall, they went out of the way to make us comfortable.
Cons: The vinyl slippers were too slippery, and would come off your foot as you walk up and down the stairs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 10/10 - one of the most memorable places we’ve ever stayed. Staff were fantastic, food was absolutely amazing, exceeded all our expectations. If you want to experience a bit of traditional Japanese culture and hospitality then this is the place! They even rearranged our free shuttle to the station when we woke up late and gave us a gift when we left. Can’t recommend highly enough.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A unique hotel full of Showa atmosphere, with every reasonable price. One of a kind even among Japanese onsen ryokans.
Cons: The room’s toilet has a smell unfamiliar to me. Not bad but more like some kind of food rather than refreshing. I suppose the hotel is understaffed atm, which is understandable because it will cost so much if all the decorations around the hotel are to be cleaned every week.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything is perfect. From the rooms, to onzen, food quality and presentation and staff services.
Cons: Yes the dining room was too smoky with so much barbecue going on at every table. The room was abit stuffy.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most exception dinner, delectable dishes made with local ingredients. One of the best onsen ryokan dinners and breakfast I have had! The public onsen has a beautiful open view of the serene mountain surroundings, we never had to share with anyone and the ryokan was quiet and peaceful. The best service by the hotel staff.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every single detail is perfect, the food is out of this world and the room couldn't be better, you have your own private onsen. It is the best experience we've ever had in our lives.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lots of privacy for room with private Onsen. Japanese bed was nicely setup and very comfortable. Friendly staff and nice services. Wonderful dinner served in eating facilities. Staff even cleaned our shoes for us.
Cons: Would have been perfect if meals can be served in room. Wooden bath tub in room seemed a bit dated.
6.3 Good
Pros: private bath Staff was very kind
Cons: I have been fukuji area twice and stayed in 4 hotels, this is the only one that I will not recommend. Indeed not worth the money. 1. The dinner was not good enough considering the price. Lots dishes went together maybe I don’t know, for saving time? the breakfast was better. 2. The private bath was not very clean, neither of the chairs in the room. 3. The dinner room was extremely smoky when we had our dinner which concluded some bbq.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is terrific. The pick up and drop off service to the station. The staff were nice and courteous. The room is huge, comfy and clean. Loved the new toilet and the toiletries in our room.
Cons: The dinner for the first night, if you are allergic to seafood, you become a vegetarian? A ryokan of this caliber should have better substitutes for seafood allergy. The strong chemical smell in the onsen water and how the onsen water makes our skin very dry and itchy. We all ended up using the onsen only once.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Clean, helpful staffs , good location
Cons: None
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We enjoyed the breakfast, especially the American breakfast with the bread. We enjoyed the public baths.
Cons: We booked an open air bath room but when we got there, the staff told us we could not use the bath. Then after a while, another staff told us they have to get someone to fix it before we could us it. Though we could use it in the end, it would have been much smoother if it was done earlier. Otherwise, tell people in advance that the air bath cannot be used so that we can book a different room type.

Pros: Everything - dinners were amazing
Cons: Nothing

7.5 Good
Pros: Spacious room , good toilet and bath spaces
Cons: Nothing we can think of which I didn’t like . Just that having stayed at 7 star hotels , my expectations were higher when spend almost 1k USD per night ..
7.9 Good
Pros: Food Staff
Cons: Location
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The room, the service, the amenities, and the food
Cons: The location, quite far from the town centre.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We are a family of three ( young teenager ) staying in a room with an outdoor onsen for one night. We had a very comfortable stay at this traditional onsen. It has excellent customer services and the food was very delicious and well presented. ( but not excellent ) All the Staffs were very helpful. The shuttle service to/from train station was particular a plus. They picked us up from the train station in a snowy day and drove us back to the train station when we checked out in a heavily rainy morning. They even walked us out in the heavy rain & brought our luggage’s onto the mini bus shuttle that parked outside the onsen. We could not ask for more! The room was very nicely decorated. There are hot teapot, some welcomes snacks and green tea bags and free juice in the mini fridge. There was also a like new massage chair at the room’s sitting area. The Tatami floor were all heated and the outdoor onsen was great. We enjoyed our stay very much.
Cons: The only thing I would recommend to improve was to install double panned windows in the dinning area for certain private dining rooms. Our private dinner room is located right next to the road and has very busy traffic. We can hear the traffic very well throughout the dinner & breakfast. Some Japanese traditional music will also be helpful to create a more “Zen “ atmosphere in the dining area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great attentive and friendly staff, spacious accommodation and food to die for. Catered well for children with a separate menu. Everyone raved about the Onsen and how good it made their skin feel afterwards. Definitely recommend Hanaougi.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: 1. The food is amazing! 2. Service is great! 3. Comfortable stay! 4. Very boutique hotel! 5. Love the natural hot spring!
Cons: None! I saw some people said the location is not good. But for me, I really like this location. It’s not in the city center, therefore more quiet. And they have shuttle bus from the hotel to the station. It’s very convenient for us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hospitality was one of a kind, the private onsen in our room was divine and absolutely worth the whole experience. Dinner was excellent and a great value for the money. While getting the meals is optional, I highly recommended getting it as the value to cost is so worth it! You're getting a lot of food for what you pay for... I could barely finish my meals! Small details like an apple juice in the fridge, an explanation of amenities and schedule, and coffee at checkout speak to their commitment towards a perfect stay. The staff is knowledgeable in English so there shouldn't be problems with understanding each other, but my girlfriend spoke Japanese so she made my experience smoother. I would love to come back in the future on day.
Cons: I didn't like that I could only stay for one night!

Pros: Tai and his parents are excellent hosts. We really enjoyed our stay. The place is warm, homely, tastefully decorated and very welcoming. We felt like we were staying with friends. The sumptuous food prepared by Tai’s mother was a real treat. We would highly recommend SOY to anyone who appreciates staying in a home away from home, and being taken care of by Tai, the most pleasant, responsive and attentive host.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great endless cups of coffee and delicious crusty french sticks/toast were the highlight of our English/Japanese breakfast. While the location was out of town, Tai was a fantastic driver, transporting us anywhere we wished to go and picking us up via the mobile phone he had lent us. Our bedding on the floor was extra comfortable - thank you Tai for accommodating our 60+ year old bodies!

Pros: Cozy place, Taisan and his family is very helpful and good breakfast.

Pros: Tai and his parents are very kind Japanese host. They offer us a home, not only a place to stay. Tai’s mom cooked our breakfast, her smile is warm. The coffee and tea
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about this experience was perfect! The actual house is beautiful with a cozy vibe. Tai and his family go far above any expectation to make you feel at home and breakfast is delicious. Tai has thought of everything to make your stay smooth - he gave us a local cell phone to contact him when we needed anything. Don't get turned off by the distance, Tai is just a text away to come pick you up. Best place we stayed in our trip.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tai-san and his family are most hospitable, and their house is beautiful. I found the experience staying with them to be very relaxing and comfortable.
Cons: House is a little close to a highway, but that can be remedied with earplugs. It wouldn't stop me from staying there again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house is over hundred years old, and its interior furniture are very exquisite. It is beautiful as well as equipped with all items that you may need. Owner Tai-san is very hospitable and considerate. He answered me patiently about my questions about my trip plan in Takayama, and he picked us from station as well as the BBQ restaurant. His mother served us with delicious breakfast in both Japanese style and American style. We also had Hida beef Sukiyaki one night (with extra pay(), it was delicious as well.
Cons: No!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Tai and his family were very kind and hospitable, meeting us at the station and giving us a lift each day to and from the house. It was very cosy relaxing in front of the fire that Tai’s father had prepared. The breakfast was very nice, with Japanese or western option. The house was absolutely beautiful and I would like to live here (or at least return one day) :-) ありがとうございます
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Literally every thing about the place we really enjoyed our stay there! We will stay there again for sure!
9.2 Excellent

Pros: Very nice staff. Amazing and varied food. The indoor baths are very comfortable and the outdoor baths are an experience you cannot miss. Every one of the six baths is private, of which two have space for two people and four space for four (so great for couples and families). Rooms are warm and beds are comfy. There is enough space to relax and cool down after a hot bath. The check-in and check-out process is as simple as it goes. Mr. and Mrs. Minoura are always available if you have any troubles or questions. They even drove me and my partner up from the nearest bus stop and back down again. It's easily accessible from Takayama using the Nohi Bus on the Shinhotaka Line. Come here if you need a night or two to turn off and recharge.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a highlight of our trip to experience staying in a traditional ryokan. The onsens were lovely and private, with views of the Japanese forest. We never had to wait for an onsen either - there was always one free for us to use. Akihiro and Naoko are wonderful hosts and provided us with information about what we might like to do, including advice for our hike up Mt Yakedake and to Kamikochi. The food was excellent with a beautifully drawn menu in English explaining what delicacies we were trying! Our room was spacious and we slept on the tatami floor which was a different experience! Overall a wonderful place to visit and we definitely hope to stay here again in the future.
Cons: We travelled here by the Alpico/Nohibus companies and although easy to navigate, I would have preferred to come by car as the bus timetables can sometimes be limiting if you are short of time and want to see as much as possible. Also - get off at "Nakao Onsen Ashiyu Mae" which is 2 stops after Nakao Kogen Guchi. Happy travels!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property was beautifully situated amongst the mountains. The rooms were extremely comfortable and staff so friendly. I would recommend staying for more than one night: it is a 1.5 hour bus ride from Takayama, so staying for one night feels rushed.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The baths and the food.
Cons: Futons a bit flat
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous property in an absolutely beautiful part of Japan! Hosts were helpful - picked us and dropped us at nearest bus stop. 6 private baths to 6 rooms - from outdoor baths surrounded by nature to indoor also with perfect views. Meals were simple but sumptuous!
Cons: They made available fresh yukatas which we could help ourselves to. Availability of fresh towels in same manner would have been useful.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owners are a very nice couple who gave us detail information about the transport and asked about our food preference prior to our arrival. Mr Minoura picked us up at the bus stop when we arrived and drove us there when we departed. Upon arrival, we planned to go to the Shinhotaka Ropeway by bus. Fearing it might rain later, Mr Minoura kindly drove us there so that we could visit the place while the weather was still fine. The hotel is very nicely furbished with many lovely decorations, some of them hand made. There are both private indoor and outdoor onsens which are both clean and comfortable. Mrs Minoura made very delicious meals using local produce. She even compiled a very lovely menu detailing each course with her own handwriting and drawings. We enjoyed our stay very much at Nakaodaira!

Pros: Heating system was very good in while place. Onsen was spectacular, especially the outdoor ones. Would love to go there again. Dinner and breakfast was also very nice. Staff was friendly, the owner offered to pick us up at the bus station and next day dropped us off at the ropeway. Great service ! All onsens were private :) The view and nature was very nice when I stayed in winter.
Cons: Nothing

8.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel still looks very new and clean. The room is spacious comparing to other hotels in Japan. The layout of the room is unusual with the sink located outside of the bathroom but it doesn't look awkward though it could be a bit noisy if you need to use the sink when your partner is sleeping.
Cons: The lack of TV in the room is really an issue. It is too quiet in the room when you and your partner are all watching the phones or ipads especially before sleeping time. Unless the hotel has a lot of facilities which the guests can spend their time on, the lack of TV in the room is definitely an issue.

Pros: Comfortable facilities, easy access to the bus station and main attractions on walking distances or by bikes, available at the hotel :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was near to many good eateries. About 20 mins walk with luggage in tow, otherwise, it’s about 12 mins from the JR station or bus centre. Room were basic but clean.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Service was great!
5.0 Okay
Cons: No sound proofing. You can literally hear all the noises from the other rooms. We stayed in a double room on level 6. At night a group of girls kept going along the hallway, laughing and talking. Tho I didn't understand a word they said as it was all in Japanese but I could hear everything in their converasation. Every time guests in other rooms opened and closed their doors, you could hear them talking, moving furnitures and stuff. I hardly make any comments or do rating on any website but this really annoyed me.

Pros: We did not have breakfast included.
Cons: Location a little out of the way.

Cons: Not having men’s restroom on second floor...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is wonderful next time we will try the dinner. Exceptional value.
Cons: Excellent value
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was clean and quiet and good location. Good value.
Cons: No kettle in the room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in the room with a private bathroom/shower, which offered a lot of space and was well designed. Location is incredibly easy to walk to from the train station, and wonderful eating is just steps away and a cool local bar, Red Hill. Easy to walk to old town and the morning market. Felt family owned and cared for. We were greeted warmly.
Cons: Felt a bit high priced compared to another more luxurious place we stayed at in Takayama, which offered more amenities and additions. Would still recommend this accommodation to travelers looking for their own private bath and families.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous location just 8-10 minutes walk from Takeyama train station and Nohi bus terminal. Veey close to the morning market and preservation quarters with old style houses. Also close to restaurants serving all sorts of local cuisine, including the famous Hida beef and Lawsons, 7-11 type convenience stores.
Cons: Men's public bath water was not hot enough. Women's public bath water was too hot.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The location it is 5 mins walk to old town and other attractions and Food and free shuttle service. And or course the public onsen!
Cons: I called 2:15 pm to inform them that we are already at the train station. They could have note it and then tell me that the pick up is at 3:O0, well the guy who received my call ask me that I call again at 3pm!!
5.4 Okay
Cons: The place is quite far from station. If you bring luggage, better don’t book this place.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location is good- 10 min walk from the main streets and sights. 15 min walk to train station and shuttle bus if need dropping there in morning. Bathroom is traditional but comfortable. People need to remember that this is not a hotel and staff are actually inviting you in to share in a traditional experience. Try to remember to say hello and thank you in Japanese and you will have a very pleasant experience with staff. They carried my luggage upstairs and were so polite toward me.
Cons: I think over priced for the level of comfort- yes is a traditional ryokan but essentially you are just paying for a hilltop view. If you have never stayed in a ryokan before then I do recommend this one. However, if you have stayed in one before, the cost of this one is probably not worth it. A little inflexible with some things- is part of traditional Japanese rigid culture. The open air bath must be booked in advance and it costs do use and is only allowed for 40mins. But the inside onsens are available at night (no lockers for valuables so don’t bring them down to the bath) No lockers or safes in the rooms (remember these are traditional) so always lock your valuables in suitcase. You need to leave the key with the desk when you leave the property - again because it is a traditional room and no electronic locks. If you have a disability or have issues getting up stairs, I would not book this property. These are NOT dislikes - but things I think people should know
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good view. I like public bath of this facility.
Cons: None.
6.7 Good
Pros: The property sits atop a hill, overlooking Takayama. The view from the rooms are great.
Cons: Quite difficult to check in with large luggages especially as it was raining when we arrived. Staffs were also not very helpful during check-in. The property is a little expensive for what it offers but this could also be due to the high demand during the xmas period.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice and clean. Impressive dinner and view from lobby
Cons: The corridor was heated too much, would be more comfortable with lower temperature and help save the energy
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing would suit the basic standard of guesthouse
Cons: The water temperature of the public bath is not hot enough and seems the taste of bleach.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our room was a large, traditional Japanese room but with comfortable western style beds. Both the public and private onsen were fantastic. The dinner offered at the hotel was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel and the view you get from being on top of a hill are great.
