Definitely get the smallest car that can fit all your luggage because of the small, narrow roads that you need to drive throughall over Italy (plus many other countries in Europe), especially in the medieval towns. It will help also with fuel efficiency since the fuel is just so expensive in Europe. It is also nice to ask for the full collision damage waiver since you don’t have to worry about looking over the car and taking photos when you get it since all damage will be covered upon your return. The cost of this coverage for me was €20 per day, which was not very much for a complete peace of mind. I chose to decline additional theft coverage since I think most people don’t have their rental cars stolen! Definitely ask for the device that tracks your tolls since that also was very reasonable price and I was told we would cover any of the tolls that we went through each day. Coming from the US, going to gas stations was a little unfamiliar in Europe since may them do full service to pump the gas for you, but that wasn’t always the case. The kiosk takes credit cards and only my American Express worked in the self service payment machine, my Visa cards were declined initially for some reason.
