Rent the smallest vehicle that will fit your needs. Parking is tight everywhere!

Parkings spots are very small even in paid parkings, so small cars are better. Old towns in Spain have very narrow streets, you need to be good driver.

There are two rental return locations for returning the vehicle. Ensure you pick the right terminal or you'll need to catch and taxi/rideshare to the other one.

For Madrid, an SUV maybe a little too large, get a compact of some kind. If like us you are using it to travel between cities get an SUV or a large sedan.

Don't drive in Madrid or Sevilla. Don't try to drive to your hotel and drop off your stuff. It was a nightmare. Just drive from train station or airport out and back and take a taxi to the train station.

GPS was required, in Madrid and everywhere else in Spain. In cities, and many towns, explore parking possibilities and walking distances before picking routes and driving in. Small cars fit where big ones don't - esp. narrow streets and tight parking garages.

Driving in Madrid was generally good. Only comment I have would be is that Madrid drivers use their horn(s) too much & for no apparent reason sometimes - do not know if this is custom, but found it very annoying.

Verified travelerMay 2023

You can usually drive down “closed” pedestrian streets if you are going to a garage or hotel located on the street.

There are speed cameras around town and on the highway.

Madrid is wonderfully located in central Spain, providing the opportunity to easily explore nearby cities such as Valencia, Zaragoza, and Barcelona. The outskirts of Madrid are filled with countrysides rich in lakes, romantic wineries, towering mountains, and historically significant buildings such as El Escorial, former residence of the King of Spain. Renting a car will give you the ability to see the stunning mountain ranges of Sierra de Guadarrama, Sierra del Norte, or Sierra de Gredos, which flank the nation’s capital. The smaller rural towns of Segovia and Ávila are within close proximity to these mountain ranges and are a terrific representation of Spanish life and its medieval charm.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid – Barajas Airport is the main international airport located 8 miles from the city center. There are two car hire locations within the airport, in Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. Large hire companies such as Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, and Sixt have counters at both terminals; however, it is best that, once you assess your hire options on KAYAK, you confirm the best pickup location with your chosen company. Once you have your hire car it will only take you approximately 40 minutes to drive to the center of Madrid; the M14 and M40 bypass roads are the best routes to take.
Especially around the congested city center, Madrid drivers have a tendency for taking any advantage on the road possible and will squeeze into small gaps. Be wary of this and continually check the cars around you, as conditions can change very quickly. It is vital that you acquire and carry an International Driver’s License before renting a car in Spain or elsewhere internationally; this license is designed to provide a commonly recognizable form of identification. Please keep in mind that it can take a few weeks to receive your license in the mail following application, so it is best to organize this with ample time left before your travels.
Madrid is a busy city at the best of times, and during rush hour (between 6 pm and 9 pm), the roads congest and the traffic network does its best to cope. In addition to the common morning commute that fills a major city’s roads, Madrid experiences a lunchtime rush hour from 1 pm to 3 pm when many workers take a long lunch break.

Good and bad, but they made it right. Initial check in was great, upgraded my car and got me out quick. Extremely disappointed with the service. The car I got was WAY SMALLER than what me and my family needed, which almost forced us to completely change our plans as our luggage didn't fit in it. We had to figure things out on the go. The company didn't move a finger to help us finding another car, not even paying the difference. I likely won't use the service again.

In person customer service was great. But there was an upsell to get the bigger car I needed to transport excess baggage. That was not clear from the online rental. On top of that I had to wait for the car to be delivered from another terminal and they decided to “start” my rental and hour earlier. Thus when I returned the car 24 hours later - they said I was an hour late and charged me an entire 2nd day charge of $300.

Fantastic service however we did have to wait for our car to be moved. We were then asked to wait while it was cleaned. 15 mins later we were given the car by a different staff member without it being cleaned. No big deal but it felt like a waste of time especially after the wait for the car to be relocated. Worth noting this was a particularly busy day due to a nationwide event taking place. Overall the condition was high standard. All staff were friendly, the drop off was quick, no need to shuttle due to good location.

Car pickup went fine. Clerk told me I should add insurance (250 Euro), but I was pretty sure it was already included in the price I agreed to. I decided to add it on, but I had not planned on the extra expense.

The seven passenger car we needed wasn't available. The agent was very embarrassed and worked hard to find us a vehicle. It took some time, but she did it. Saved our trip in Spain.

I reserved a car online few minutes before going to rental location. When I reached there the lady said I should have made reservation directly with them because the car I reserved online was not available and I will have to wait for 2 hours so that she can find same car for me! Or I have to upgrade and get a more expensive car. There was no one but me at that location, means they were not busy at all and there’s no reason for me to wait 2 hours. I understood that she was pushing me to get a car they were not able to rent easily. Secondly I took insurance for car when making reservation through Kayak. She said that insurance is not valid in Spain and was trying to sell me an insurance costing $100 a day!! I went online and got an insurance valid anywhere in world for $84 for a week. Car pick up and drop off was easy and staff was good there. Car itself was in good condition.

Upon arrival to the car rental office I was informed that they had a 2 hour window to pick up the car. WHERE WAS THAT CLAUSE? Because I have never heard of such thing nor I saw it in the rental agreement. They also informed me that they had no cars available. I ended up having to spend double. Unacceptable

They canceled my confirm reservation . Left me with no car.. I had to rent another car from another company paying five times as much.. It was a horrible experience.. I’ll never recommend kayaking to anyone

Excellent car. I goy a really good rate. Pickup and drop off was a little slow since they only had one person at the desk.

I have rented cars throughout many countries in the world and this has to be the absolute worse experience of the last 35 years. I had booked an SUV, but the SUV had a bad sensor so I could not take that vehicle. Instead, they gave me a small sedan (Corolla). When I asked for another SUV because that is what I paid for, they said that it was big enough and had no other SUVs available even though I saw several in the parking lot. They charged 50% fee of total rental for 1 day in France which was never disclosed when booking. The 50% of total rental did not include insurance or anything else so I was still responsible for any damage, so the extra fee was a complete money grab. What was I to do as it was too late to book a vehicle with another company in another country? The only positive was the fast return of the vehicle.

It is a bit long to get the car...4 people in front of me and it took like 1 hour. For the rest, it's all good.

First time with Record Go. Very efficient pickup. Great car. Excellent value. Personnel were very pleasant and helpful. Drop off was very efficient. Car had a tire sensor light on at pickup. They inflated all tires and told me it would go out after I drive a little. It never went out, but there was never a problem. Probably just needs a sensor replaced. Woman at drop off was especially courteous. Told me in the future I should make sure I take pictures of the car. I’ll do that in the future. I will DEFINITELY rent from them again when available.

The car had been vandalized (with a key) with obscenities that I didn't notice when i picked it up in the darkness of the underground garage. When I did notice it, I thought someone had done it while I had it and made a police report. RecordGo should have pointed it out when I picked up the car.

Have just flown home. The check out and in process was smooth but they did not look over the car when you take it or on return, they just advise you to take photos. Having just landed, I have received an email with a €750 charge for windscreen damage which was there when I took it (I have photos as advised). They have also charged for 1/2 a tank of fuel when I returned 3/4. It is going to be such a headache sorting it out. Really disappointed. Like a windscreen replacement even costs that much anyway!! Total rip off. AVOID

I already completed a survey w Europcar. I was getting info from three companies about this rental- very confusing. In addition, the upselling hustle of Europcar is disgraceful. Not only did they not have the hybrid I reserved and spent extra time searching for on kayak!, they didn’t have it. Sales clerk tried to hustle her way out of that by sharing wisdom on why a non-hybrid (or a diesel MB!) was a more prudent choice. Ugh. They didn’t an inspection of the car before we took off. There’s no clear protocol on where they’re looking. I videotaped it. Upon return, we got dinged for a small scratch on the tire wheel. This is a rental car. Rental. The scratch is on the wheel. Of a Volkswagen. Ridiculous. What assurances are there that the next renter will not be charged for the same thing? What assurances are there that the money they’re charging us will go toward its repair. Completely unethical for a car RENTAL company to nickle and dime on wear and tear. This is such a scam. No one gets out of there without something to pay for or charge insurance to! I’d bet they work on commission, as well. Oh, and the same sales lady remarked that they don’t accept video for proof. They’ve got a vulnerable clientele in a foreign country who are likely running late to keep a schedule- we don’t have the time or local knowhow to properly deal with this. Utterly shameful.
