Built in 1908, The Opal is 5 blocks from the California Street cable car line. Union Square in downtown San Francisco is an 8-block stroll, with several dining and shopping venues, and the Civic Center cultural district is 5 blocks away.
Great valuePros: Very affordable price (except parking ). The hotel is within walking distance of all kinds of great places: restaurants, bars, Union Square, Japan Town, etc. The bed are big and comfy!Cons: The ice machine was kind of hidden on the third floor. Kind of weird. Also, no fridge or microwave in the room.
Pros: Front desk person was very helpfull.Cons: Carpet with stains and smelly.
SuckedPros: NothingCons: Everything. Especially the manager.
Old, outdated, dirtyPros: Leaving the next morningCons: It was outdated, old, and dirty. The comforter looked like it hadn't been washed in years. There was a banana peel with a gnat flying around it left in the trash can that never got cleaned out before we checked it. I slept fully clothed. I could very easily see this hotel and the room have a rodent/bug problem. I would NEVER stay here again, even if I was being paid to.
Great value, great locationPros: This place was rated 3 stars. We went into it knowing that. It met our expectations. Great location, clean, good price.
Staff were excellent. The bed was surprisingly comfortable. Cons: Nothing. Was exactly what we expected.
Cons: Bird poop on my car even though it's covered parking.
Noise from garbage container cleaning at 10 pm and 7 am right below my room.
Getting from parking to lobby is just sketchy.
Cons: The hotel has a funny smell. I didn't like it.
Pros: The bed was exceedingly cozy, and the room was spacious. I don't know if all rooms are that spacious, or just the handicapped-accessible ones. The free breakfast was decent.Cons: There was a strange smell I couldn't really identify, which first reminded me of a grandparent's home. When I returned to my family, I was told I smelled like a bandaid, and that was similar to the room's smell. Not unpleasant, just disconcerting.
Cons: The only thing I did not like is that the hotel os smoke free. The need to offer a place for guests to smoke outside
Definitely will stay at the Opal again!Pros: The Opal is an older building with beautiful architecture and charm. To get into the lobby you have to be a guest, using your room key to unlock the front doors. I was so much more relaxed within the hotel with this added security. It is in an excellent location to good food and sight seeing and if driving, is easy to get to from 101 and they also have a private, gated parking garage! We will definitely stay at the Opal San Francisco in the future!Cons: Would recommend curved shower rods to give a little extra room. Because of being an older building the electrical outlets are minimal and had to do some rotation of electrical devices.
Pros: The staff was very friendly. The rooms were nice and clean. The continental breakfast was very good. And in a good location if you want to see the city.
Vintage look hotel, everything works finePros: Price
RoomCons: Location is not bat but could be better
