10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you still have to make up your mind about your accommodation, this hostel/guesthouse is defitenitely the right option. It made our trip considerably more remarkable. The hosts are beyond kind: they even offered us some sushi, or some yuzu when I was a bit sick. The breakfast is incredibly good and definitely worth booking, as it shows an important part of Japanese culture - the homemade cuisine. I am a corgi enthusiast, but even people who are not confortable around animals won't be bothered by the dog and cat, which somehow didn't cause my usual allergy. Definitely reccomended as the beds were also comfortable and the structure didn't lack anything - from coffee to chocolate cake, from boardgames to omiyage earings, this hostel has it all.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: You'll feel homey instantly you step into the property. Hug, the little corgi will welcome you at the doorstep with cute outfit. There's manga, magazines, board games, weird toys and decorations for you to explore in every corner of the house! .Absolutely lovely if you like a place with a lot of story!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff where really friendly, they were all friends by the time i left. The property felt like you where staying in someones house, the lodge was my space to chill lots of book and interesting features. The breakfast was cheap and meet dietary needs, fantastic coffee. The owner showed an interest into what I was doing in Japan as well as helped as much as possible in getting transport, Really cool spot cant recommend enough...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was one of the coziest hostel I've ever visited .As there're two cuties which have tails
Cons: None
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything inside the house is GREAT. The staff was really friendly, Momo the Cat was also very cute. The house has cozy living room to warm our body in cold Otaru while making new friend with other customer. It has comic and movie collections. The decoration is REALLY INTERESTING. And the bathroom was really relaxing becausw we can enjoy the bath filled with good bathing powder. Just love everything in the house❣
Cons: I think it's a little bit far. Because we had to go through the heavy snow, the road was quite difficult to walk. And little bit far in walk for Otaru Canal.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: wonderful breakfast, friendly staff and comfortable environment
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great Hostel! Host is very friendly and helpful! Rooms are nice and cosy. Breakfast is homemade, very delicious and healthy! Perfect place to stay!!!
7.5 Good
Pros: The location is near to the sushi road, shopping centre, we can take a walk around. Love the greens around the house. The dog & cat are so cute. The staff is so nice, and helpful, though the owner is a little uncomfortable with.
Cons: The staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very kind. I would highly recommends to have breakfast prepared by owner. It is worth of every penny. A true Japanese cuisine with lots of love and affection. A great location. Otaru canal, glass factory, steam clock tower all within walking distance.
Dormy Inn Premium Otaru - Otaru - Building

8.7 Excellent (7,566 reviews)
S$ 126+
Overview Reviews
Dormy Inn Premium Otaru Natural Hot Spring is in the heart of Otaru, within a 10-minute walk of Sakaimachi Street and Otaru Canal. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, dry cleaning/laundry services, and luggage storage. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location was OK, the shower was good, check in was easy
Cons: This hotel was our most expensive and least favorite on Hokkaido (and all of Japan actually). The pillows were terrible - not comfortable at all. We arrived at breakfast at 6:30 am and had to wait for 15 minutes just to get a table. The wifi was barely usable.
7.0 Good
Pros: The location was really convenient. It is just 30 secs away from the Otaru train station. However we drove therefore didn't benefit a lot from that. But luckily, the "triangle" fish market is just by the Otaru train station! We fed up our belly before heading to the canal to enjoy the city. The onsen experience is the highlight of this stay. We didn't manage to book the massage service because it was full. We'd like to have one. The onsen has outdoor and indoor. Both were amazing and I would definitely recommend you to enjoy the onsen here.
Cons: The room is really outdated and old. I think a lot needs to be redone before catching up the standard of modern hotels. It is in Hokkaido with less crowded city load, I would expect we could have got more with the price paid. If you check in before 3pm, you got to pay for the extra hours for the parking on top of the minimum payment you got to pay for your parking during your stay. I found that was a bit annoying.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location opposite to JR Otaru station. Nice public hotspring.
3.3 Mediocre
Cons: They've punctured my backpack and left a deep dent on a year old macbook pro and refused take any responsibility. I've checked in my backpack with my laptop inside since I arrived a couple of hours early. When I came back and got backpack back I realised my backpack was very dusty with stains all over it. When opened my backpack I saw a deep dent on my laptop and a hole on my bag on the exact same spot. I use my laptop every day, so I knew it wasn't there before. My guess is that they've dropped it or put something sharp and heavy on my bag. I made a complaint at the reception but they said they're not responsible for any damages to the bags, even showing me a piece of paper about it. I argued that they should have shown me that or at least tell me before I left the luggage, and they also confessed that they should have, but refused to take any responsibility because there's no "evidence" that they've damaged them. I've been to tens of pathetic hotels (and hostels) in my life, but never once had I have to worry about getting my bag and its content in one piece after a storage service. I guess I should have taken detailed pictures of my stuff before checking them in for few hours so I have enough "evidence" in case anything like this happens. I've used Dormy Inn hotels many times before, but never again will I ever use one. A night in a wrong hotel and it cost me hundreds of dollars.

Dormitory L - Hostel - Otaru - Building

8.8 Excellent (129 reviews)
S$ 122+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Dormitory L - Hostel in Otaru, you'll be within a 15-minute walk of Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street. Featured amenities include luggage storage, laundry facilities, and a water dispenser.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly owner - felt a bit like a grandfather to me. I had a wonderful time chatting with him and discussing my journey and possible places to go (in a mixture of Japanese and English). The breakfast is phenomenal and the beds comfy. The flat might not be modern or stylish but it has this nice Japanese flair... like stepping into the home of a Japanese family.
Cons: Not a big problem, but sometimes I could hear the train arriving in the station, which woke me up.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It"s real Japanese house, old but well-managed clean. Very kind and I never forget him, he said good-bye at the door of the house for long time. He teally tried to say something about Otaru, Japan but just Japanese, no English and any other languages. However, I can have good time here.
Cons: nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Amazing breakfast!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was nutritious and filling. I had no need to eat lunch after such a wonderful breakfast (lots of fresh fruit). The owner is very gracious and will go out of his way to answer any question you have. When I asked for directions he drew a picture on a white board and later walked me out to the street to direct me further. Although the facility is a dormitory style accommodation, the owner conscientiously tries to provide as much privacy as he can to the guest. There were two beds in my room and he could have placed another guest in the room beside me but choose instead to provide both of us privacy by placing us in separate rooms. There were two types of beds in the room: one soft and one hard. I chose the hard mattress bed and slept very well. Although the L Dorm is only five minutes from the train station, the house was very quiet.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It's wonderful! Friendly host and amazing breakfast~ I had a wonderful night more than I expected!!
10.0 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house owner is very nice and kind. He serves the best breakfast including lots of fruits and side dishes. It is so nice that he takes pictures for all the visitors. The place is located near the station and it is very quiet at night.
Cons: The room was small to lay my baggage and there was only one shower room so I had to wait. Because you have to sleep with somebody unknown you might feel a little bit uncomfortable.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable bed and breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: hospitality, location, comfortable bed....
Cons: i really don't know
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Little bit off the town center
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Motoko is a wonderful host, I loved spending time with her and her kids, I asked her so many questions about Japan and its beautiful culture, she was more than happy to answer any and all my questions and I learnt so much from her. 9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly hostess
7.5 Good
Pros: The host was very kind and helpful.
Cons: The room was quite small and the bunk beds did not have curtains. It would probably be good to have a list of rules as the other guests I stayed with were incredibly rude (eating, talking, phone notifications throughout the night).

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly service and warm hospitality , even take us to otabu station for sightseeing walk. It's really a worthy place to drop in again!
Cons: Nop
7.9 Good
Pros: Price was excellent. Potential tenants need to understand that this is a guesthouse, not a hotel. Common areas are shared, including bath. There was only 1 other tenant at the time we stayed, so noise & crowding were not a problem. With a full house they might have been. Bedding was traditional futons on tatami floors. Room & bedding were very clean. Bedroom door had a lock. Owner provided transport to station & elsewhere in town.
Cons: I could see that comfort levels were dependent on having few other tenants. Guesthouse stays are better suited for the young & adventurous ( we are 2 females in our 70s.). As it happened we had a pleasant stay with the Annex almost to ourselves.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff propose to give you a ride for the station and it s free of charge. They welcomed us earlier without hesitation.
7.5 Good
Pros: It's a good budget choice for visiting Otaru. It's not expensive and you can even enjoy the view of Otaru's firework during the summer. Good option if you are driving a car.
Cons: If you are visiting Otaru in Summer, make sure you can survive without air-conditioning. Like many of the home-stays/ hostels/ old hotels in Hokkaido, they have only heating but not air-conditioning. The room has one fan but wasn't quite enough for a hot summer night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is good.Place is clean and comfortable. Host is very kind and honest.next time will stay here again.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We mistakenly left our torchlight in the room. The owner was so nice to go out to the fish market to try to look for us to return the torchlight when he could have just left it alone for us to go back for it. We were there during the last week of June and it was not busy at all. The guesthouse was cosy but a little difficult to find. Need to use the mapcode provided by owner, will get you to wrong location if u type in the name on Google map. We were driving so no issue with the location though would preferred to stay somewhere more central if travelling without private vehicle.
Cons: everything was great for a guesthouse experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptionally clean and so very well-designed, away from the crowds just 7mins stroll thru a lovely suburban area, or a morning drop-off service is free to the train station. Thank you Morisaki-san and Koichi-san, also Iisamu-san.
7.9 Good
Pros: Owner took care of the locarion problem, driving us down the hill every time we needed.
Cons: Location up a hill
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a very pleasant stay at this hostel. The host was extremely helpful and nice.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is just opposite to the famous Warehouse area and the Canal. The JR Station is just 7 minutes walking distance away. Our room is cosy, well-facilitated and clean. The breakfast buffet is perfect with lots of items to choose from. All staffs are friendly and helpful.
Cons: Nil
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is about 10-min walk from the JR Otaru Station and it's right in front to the Otaru Canal, also close to the canal cruise gathering point (but my friends and I decided not to take the cruise because we wanted to walk along the Canal and enjoy the night to ourselves). There are four of us and we booked one room because we wanted to stay together and the room was way beyond my expectation. It had two restroom and one separate bathroom, with two sinks outside which allowed our four girls to complete our morning freshening up pretty smooth. Really appreciate the arrangement.
6.7 Good
Pros: Hotel is clean and good breakfast
Cons: The toilet was small and would be better to provide shower box
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Bathroom with two hand wash tub

Pros: Good view, nice room
Cons: Security is need to be improved. From open cafe as no staff or security staff at north building after cafe close at 8:00pm, it can be easily to get in the lift up to the room. It must have a scan toward room key card then pressing floor.

Cons: It was long lines to check in! The onsen was great but too many people!

Dining Quench your thirst with your favorite drink at the bar/lounge. Business, Other Amenities Free self parking is available onsite.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s got a lot of character, beautifully situated on a cliff top overlooking the sea. The room was lovely and a good size with a very nice private Onsen which had a view. Everything in the room was very clean and the hotel was extremely quiet when we were there. The staff were lovely and the hotel restaurant was very enjoyable overall. Parking is easy and convenient.
Cons: The hotel is very dated, it needs a facelift whilst maintaining its charm. There are a lot of hallway carpets which don’t smell great. One of the main features of the hotel is the observation deck which is completely shut down and looks like it needs some serious repair work. Seems like there was a flood at some point. There was supposed to be a lounge/casual dining area on the lobby level but it was never open. The hotel didn’t make use of any outdoor space for food or drinks. The food at the restaurant was excellent but a bit stuffy. Most people went for the set menus, we chose to go a la carte but then everything was coursed out of synch. We ate there twice but never had our dishes at the same time, was very strange. Would recommend a car if you stay here
6.3 Good
Pros: The sea view.
Cons: Furniture and fittings are abit old. Location is way out of the main town area. Quiet place though.
4.6 Okay
Cons: This is an extremely overpriced hotel. It's much further out of Otaru than expected (20min by bus) and the shuttle doesn't run very often. There is no shuttle to get back to the hotel after 6pm so your only option is to eat in the hotel because there is literally nothing around on foot. You're completely isolated. The onsen water was not very clean and the whole feel of the place was dated. The biggest issue by far, however, is the location and shuttle bus service.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Yamato breakfast is normal. Not too much surprise. Others are excellent. Shuttle bus is very convenient. I will choose this hotel again while I travel to Otaru.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I loved the view of the ocean and the in-room private bath!! The bed was also nice. The staff were really friendly and helped us with any questions we had!
Cons: You could tell the hotel was pretty old and had signs of wear and tear in the room. Example: our room’s curtain had a pretty big hole it, the walls had skid marks.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are knowledgeable and helpful. Rooms are clean.
Cons: The window is too light that heavy wind and snow make the room noisy at night.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breathtaking views. The in-room open air bath was incredible. Well worth the money and distance from Otaru Station. Be sure to make reservations for the free shuttle.
7.9 Good
Pros: The in room onsen. Nice comfortable and big bed.
Cons: The price was a little high even with no food and location is a little on the outskirts.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room is very spacious and comfortable. Private bath was great
7.5 Good
Pros: I specifically booked this room for the private bath that came with the room. I loved it. The room was fantastic and I really liked the view of the ocea. I thought the food was great, but my husband didn't think so. I liked that the room came with both dinner and breakfast.
Cons: Overall, it was a good stay. I just didn't like that when we went down to breakfast, I went down in my slippers and they told me that I wasn't allowed to wear slippers. However, the night before, I distinctly saw another guest wearing slippers while we were eating dinner. He made a really loud sound while walking away from the table. This was why I thought it was okay for me to do the same during breakfast. I wish the staff had been more consistent enforcing the rule. It just left a bad impression with an otherwise nice stay.

Pros: Clean and modern Japanese style room Nice and caring smiling staff
4.6 Okay
Pros: Very good location
Cons: My booking is Japanese style room but hotel change another room to me before my arrival day one day early. I can't do any changes and booking staff did not give me any help. The changing room is very bad, small and old. It's really not value my booking price. The hotel facilities are old that it's not value four stars in booking rate.
7.9 Good
Pros: Cleanliness and onsen
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing much
Cons: Not flexible in late checkout. Run down facilities. Onsen not impressive
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I'm a big fan of winter rotenburo/onsen so was looking forward to my single night stay here. I made a last minute booking so I paid a bit more than normal (also, I ended in a suite, which was very large, well furnished, and quite nice - the bathroom in particular was top notch, with a soaking tub with a view of the mountain in a large shower area.) If you're into snow sports, it's across the street from a lifts/mountains though, but otherwise the location is a bit meh - not quite far out enough to be properly remote in a good way, but also, not anywhere near any shops, restaurants etc. There is a small konbini/shop and a small bar/izakaya that's open in the evening in the lobby, however. I had the kaiseki meal but was put in first floor western-style restaurant vs the standard area (which was apparently full). The meal itself wasn't bad, but not very memorable/worthwhile. There's actually a bunch of fitness facilities - an indoor pool, gym, squash courts, table tennis, and even a tennis court (if I was looking at the pictures correctly) although I didn't end up using any of it. Oh, worth mentioning that while a bit slow, there was wifi in the room, so that's good! Also, service was excellent, very friendly and helpful staff.
Cons: While the onsen was fine, sadly it's closed overnight and the rotenburo didn't exactly stand out. I took a taxi both ways - about ¥2000 - it'd be more if you were trying to head into the port/town (by the canals) from Otaruchikko station although there's single shuttle to the station in the morning right after checkout - as mentioned, the location is far away enough to be out of the way, but not so far as to be quite bucolic, although everything is helped by a layer of fresh powder.
7.9 Good
Pros: The Onsen is fabulous after a hard day skiing and the outdoor pools are so beautiful.
7.5 Good
Pros: The beds are comfortable although the pillows are too few and too soft for my liking. The buffet breakfast is good with enough variety although they don't have an egg station. There is a Ramen restaurant which serves good udon and ramen. The mini mart has a good variety of food and local produce and the prices are cheaper than Chitose airport.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The service is great. Extremely polite and helpful. We had a little incident with another customer at the restaurant and the staff really handled it well.
Cons: The hotel is a little bit dated but they really make it up with excellent service.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are really helpful and willing to help. I lost my bag and wallet in Asari station, they helped to call station and taxi. Finally I found my bag and wallet! The hotel is really good to. I like the spring hot water bath. It is also really close to Ski place. I will come back in the future,
Cons: all good.
6.5 Good
Pros: onsen
Cons: room very dated. basin has crack. gave us other type of room (down graded). until we asked then told us the room we booked were fully occupied. Then upgraded us to a bigger room.

Pros: Wonderful owner. Great view from each room, every room looks towards the ocean. This hotel is much nicer than in the photos. Very clean. We stayed two nights and loved it. Went swimming on the beach. Restaurant are a short drive away.
Cons: I liked everything.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: super friendly owners clean room impressive view
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great hospitality by the manager. Great location 6 meters from the sea!!!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The view is excellent, provided that you can accept the natural sound of seawater waving into the beach.
Cons: While the room looks clean, there is a slight salty stale smell probably due to its seaside location plus a lack of necessary care of the carpet. The smell will go away if the window is open, which is okay during our stay. But, I am not sure what will happen in other weather conditions.
4.2 Okay
Pros: Location by the sea; nice views from room. Host is accommodating.
Cons: The beds were in pretty bad shape and the pillows smelled funky. I was not able to sleep at all. The blankets were not very clean. There were also a few bugs found near the bed and the washroom smelled musty. Needs better upkeep.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cleanliness Room space Sea-view from house Staffs Wi-Fi Highly recommended
Cons: No elevator so maybe a little bit troublesome for those who carry big luggage PS. Its fine to me. Plus, this property should not be equipped with it :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you plan on having your food at the hotel, Call earlier and Check with the staff if they have resturant facilities.
Cons: If you plan on having your food at the hotel, Call earlier and Check with the staff if they have resturant facilities.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner and an elderly man who is his assistant were very hospitable and enthusiastic hosts. They were very welcoming and helpful. The room was neat and tidy and the ambience of this old but well kept dwelling with great sea view of sunsets was worth the trip out of otaru centre on the way to cape kamui. Dinner is best to arrive latest before 7pm at a chinese restaurant 3mins drive away and a 7-11 store next door.
Cons: Extra pillows automatically providedwould be nice but its not a serious issue. I'm sure the owner would have provided promptly if requested.
4.6 Okay
Pros: The location is good. Very near to the sea and with a small beach
Cons: There is no service. No breakfast and no drinks. And in the neighbourhood are no shops or restaurants.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The stay was a very pleasant one. It's is near the beach and with a very good view of the sea with 'unlimited sea breeze'. Too bad I did not have a chance to swim in it as the water was really freezing. The staff was very friendly and exceed my expectations in hotel stay. They are helpful and polite and everytime when we go out they will send us off to our car. Lol. The room is so big and can roughly accommodate 4-6 people. Overall I do lile this place very much and I will go back again if I have the chance. Definitely recommend this place to my friends.
Cons: Not easily accessible without driving. The bed sheet was too old fashion.

Cons: Room is small
7.9 Good
Pros: Both of us had just 1 night in this small hotel which had a perfect location. Walking distance to train station and canal. Shopping arcade just opposite the hotel. Room is quite small for a budget room rate that is so convenience I think we will rate it perfect(especially hotel rate during weekend in Japan!!!)We had a nice stay.
7.5 Good
Pros: Love the location
4.2 Okay
Pros: Nothing, I repeat.. Nothing can redeem this place.
Cons: Where to start? The rude and arrogant staff who couldnt be bothered to tell me where the room was? The insanely ridiculous parking policy? The run down hotel? The overpriced accommodation that makes it more expensive than Tokyo? The appalling bathroom that is below public bathroom standards? The drunk violent guests smashing up the room next to mine at midnight?

5.0 Okay
Pros: The view was magnificent . Easy to get the bus. About 220 yen a trip from otaru. Station. Easy access to otaru. It was basically a large locker room to store our things and floor to sleep on. It was cheaper than a lot of other places and it was available. Other rooms had bed but ours didn’t. It was clean and quiet. definately not for anyone with any injuries or disabilities as not an option but perfectly fine for us. Not close enough for snow festival but doable. If back by last bus. Electricity did trip but was fixed quickly. We were lucky somone was there usually only manned at night in morning for few hours.
Cons: It was a really great place to stay if you were going skiing at mt tenguyama. The service was non existent. The safety was questionable. The fire escape ladder was rusted and outside a window that only opened partially. The ladder was lower down on the section that didn’t open. We had to make our own beds . No communication about anything other than to take money and get kegs and give keys. Front stairs a health hazard. No attempt to de Ice whatsoever apart from throwing dirt down. Futon was about 2 cm off floor. Bus stop required us to walk up hill and compete with traffic. Electricity tripped on our last day and was off majority of day and we were told it must of been us trying to charge phones and boil kettle and heat place. It had been off earlier as things left to charge didn’t. No private toilet and bathroom downstairs. No one changed linen in four days. No mention of breakfast only rules of clean up afterself.
7.1 Good
Pros: The room has space for many large luggages. Staff can not speak English, but she try her best to talk with us.
Cons: Cheaper than Otaru city, but still expensive for us. Cus we didn’t want to go to ski, just want to visit Otaru canal. Don’t have a closet in the room, and also don’t have any place to hang a coat hanger.
