Pros: The staff where really friendly, they were all friends by the time i left. The property felt like you where staying in someones house, the lodge was my space to chill lots of book and interesting features. The breakfast was cheap and meet dietary needs, fantastic coffee. The owner showed an interest into what I was doing in Japan as well as helped as much as possible in getting transport, Really cool spot cant recommend enough...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was one of the coziest hostel I've ever visited .As there're two cuties which have tails
Cons: None
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything inside the house is GREAT. The staff was really friendly, Momo the Cat was also very cute. The house has cozy living room to warm our body in cold Otaru while making new friend with other customer. It has comic and movie collections. The decoration is REALLY INTERESTING. And the bathroom was really relaxing becausw we can enjoy the bath filled with good bathing powder. Just love everything in the house❣
Cons: I think it's a little bit far. Because we had to go through the heavy snow, the road was quite difficult to walk. And little bit far in walk for Otaru Canal.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great Hostel! Host is very friendly and helpful! Rooms are nice and cosy. Breakfast is homemade, very delicious and healthy! Perfect place to stay!!!
8.3 Excellent

Pros: The location is near to the sushi road, shopping centre, we can take a walk around. Love the greens around the house. The dog & cat are so cute. The staff is so nice, and helpful, though the owner is a little uncomfortable with.
Cons: The staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very kind. I would highly recommends to have breakfast prepared by owner. It is worth of every penny. A true Japanese cuisine with lots of love and affection. A great location. Otaru canal, glass factory, steam clock tower all within walking distance.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Steps away from Otaru Station, yet walkable to the canal and restaurants. Rooms were a little dated, but more spacious than other hotels I have encountered in Japan, comfortable enough for a short stay. Late night ramen was a definite bonus. I was impressed by the onsen facilities and how clean it was - even though it was busy at times, after a day of skiing it was the perfect way to unwind.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: perfect location, nice staff, great onsen
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was well equipped. The buffet breakfast offered a wide variety of food choices. The location which is right across the train station made it very convenient for us. The check-in as well as the check-out process was a breeze. I particularly liked the layout of the twin room where we stayed in. It is quite unusual and is a welcome change from all the other hotel rooms I have stayed in.
Cons: It is quite pricey.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is at a great location. Cross street from the JR station. Easy walking to the Otaru canal etc. Room is pretty small but sufficient. Hot spring was good. Breakfast was good and they offer free Ramen in the late evening (9:30-11pm) on the 2nd floor.
Cons: Staff could be nicer. I arrived before check in time (3pm) and while waiting at the lobby, I asked the front desk staff if I could use Wifi. She would not give me the Wifi password - she said I could only get it once in my room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Close to the station and only a short walk to most of the notable sites in otaru. Beautiful rooms, comfy bed and possibly the biggest bathroom area that I have experienced in Japan. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and even let me check in early (without me even asking) as my room was ready when I went to drop off my bags.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Onsen and breakfast, comfy bed

Cons: Little bit off the town center
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Motoko is a wonderful host, I loved spending time with her and her kids, I asked her so many questions about Japan and its beautiful culture, she was more than happy to answer any and all my questions and I learnt so much from her. I met a lot of amazing people at Emina Backpackers Hostel, would definitely reccommend staying here!

Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome place and awesome people, specially Motoko
7.5 Good
Pros: The host was very kind and helpful.
Cons: The room was quite small and the bunk beds did not have curtains. It would probably be good to have a list of rules as the other guests I stayed with were incredibly rude (eating, talking, phone notifications throughout the night).
Dormitory L - Hostel - Otaru - Outdoor view
5
8.9 Excellent (106 reviews)
S$ 124+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Dormitory L - Hostel in Otaru, you'll be within a 15-minute walk of Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street. Featured amenities include luggage storage, laundry facilities, and a water dispenser.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly owner - felt a bit like a grandfather to me. I had a wonderful time chatting with him and discussing my journey and possible places to go (in a mixture of Japanese and English). The breakfast is phenomenal and the beds comfy. The flat might not be modern or stylish but it has this nice Japanese flair... like stepping into the home of a Japanese family.
Cons: Not a big problem, but sometimes I could hear the train arriving in the station, which woke me up.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was nutritious and filling. I had no need to eat lunch after such a wonderful breakfast (lots of fresh fruit). The owner is very gracious and will go out of his way to answer any question you have. When I asked for directions he drew a picture on a white board and later walked me out to the street to direct me further. Although the facility is a dormitory style accommodation, the owner conscientiously tries to provide as much privacy as he can to the guest. There were two beds in my room and he could have placed another guest in the room beside me but choose instead to provide both of us privacy by placing us in separate rooms. There were two types of beds in the room: one soft and one hard. I chose the hard mattress bed and slept very well. Although the L Dorm is only five minutes from the train station, the house was very quiet.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Only stayed 1 night but had a wonderful time. Azuma the owner makes you feel so at home. Fabulous breakfast.
Cons: N/A
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very nice breakfast, full of vegetables with roasted salmon, fried beef slice, egg roll and fruits. The owner, lao tao, is very warm and considering. Tho I'm not sure whether he can speak English because he kept talking with my friend(who knows Japanese) in Japanese. Place is nice, small but comfortable enough. The hostel really close to train station, be advised there's a steep ramp on the way, may be painful if you carry heavy luggages.
Cons: Cooking is prohibited except microwave, not a big problem just mentioned here for reminding. Also, front door will be locked after 11 pm, need to call the owner if you come back late.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 3 minute walk from station, 95/90 wifi speed, very filling breakfast everyday. Cheapest and best value in hokkaido, breakfast alone is 1000 yen from a store.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: hospitality, location, comfortable bed....
Cons: i really don't know
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I like the house, the breakfast and the owner .this is my 2 nd stay here after 34 months.its just like a home for me in otaru.i stay 4 nights.

6.0 Good
Pros: Great location, lovely views of the canal. Basic room
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The excellent location for the town of Otaru. Our room was very spacious.
Cons: In the height of the Coronavirus scare, the bathroom & "toilet room" weren't cleaned. The toilet room had a very bad fermented fish smell & it wasn't cleaned. The bathroom doors were very sticky & bath tub had a "ring" which means it wasn't cleaned. I ended up cleaning these toilet room & bathroom myself!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Otaru canal is just across the street. The room is very big, they give us a free upgrade to suite room. The bathroom has a dry area with 2 sinks and wet zone with big bathtub and wash area as in onsen. There are 2 toilets. The staffs are very nice and speak english quite well. 7.9 Good
Pros: The hotel was comfortable and the room well appointed The onsen facilities were absolutely superb and it was a delight to sit in the outdoor onsen as it was sheltered from the wind but allowed snow flakes to fall on your head The location next to canal was marvellous as we were there during the snow light festival
Cons: The room smelt very musty and unpleasant, with the smell worse in the bathroom.
7.1 Good
Pros: It’s a very convenient location to the heart of Otaru where restaurants and shopping are.

Cons: The unsecured Free wifi doesn’t work at room.
7.9 Good
Pros: Staffs are reasonably professional. They acted somewhat after we complained about the kids running above our suite.
Cons: We thought it's worth to pay top dollar (I mean $750/night is not cheap by any standard) for close enough ski hotel. All went well until the loud kids were running and shouting between private osen rooms. Then it's the disappointing dinner menu. It was nowhere near the $300-500/night osen standard. I get the extra dollar for private view, but didn't I just say it was ruined already?
10.0 Excellent
Pros: .Wonderful hotel. Beautiful lobby, clean big rooms and beautiful surrounding area, Great breakfast, helpful staff, wonderful onsen
Cons: Leaving
8.0 Excellent

Cons: Pricey. Adherence to rigid time schedule; 9.45am to finish breakfast and leave restaurant, 10am check-out is a bit rich on a Sunday morning!

Pros: Just 5 minutes away from ski resort & hotel offered free shuttle bus service to & from the resort. There was also free onsen onsite.
Cons: Their main restaurant required reservation - we didnt know this on our first night & we had to wait for an hour before we could be seated. Hotel has limited number of dining places & is quite far from other reataurants.
