Top tips for hiring a car at Bucharest Airport

  • Whether for work or pleasure, chances are that you are flying into Bucharest Otopeni International Airport (OTP). The airport is centrally located and well-connected by public transport and motorways. Using the A0 Beltway around Bucharest you can explore the city and the A1 and A2 allows you to explore the area around the city or travel to the rest of the country. For this we definitely recommend car hire at Bucharest Otopeni Intl Airport, so you have extra flexibility to explore any area you want.
  • We recommend that you rent a car from a company that is based at the airport, which is faster and more efficient, especially if you are in a hurry, or you have a lot of luggage. It also has an added advantage in that you have other service providers in the same location should you have a problem with your original rental booking. This prevents you from being stranded somewhere else trying to find a replacement car.
  • Keep in mind two important things: if your driver’s licence text is not in the Roman alphabet, you need to have an International Driving Permit. Likewise, if you are renting with a non-EU issued licence, you also need the same. Most companies you can use at the airport require extra insurance if you are a driver under 25 years of age, and they also request that you have had a licence for a minimum of one year. Don't worry, when you make your booking on KAYAK and you indicate your age, all the insurance is already included in your quote, so there are no surprises when you arrive to pick up your car.
  • If you are travelling on a budget, or have some extra time to spare, you can also book a car through a company that provides car delivery and handover at the airport parking. You can also make use of free shuttle services to rental agencies five to 10min away from the airport. Of course, you can also book a car through KAYAK at another location you need, and specify a different drop off point, if you are arriving and departing from different locations.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at Bucharest Airport for S$ 30 or less
  • Book your car hire at Bucharest Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

I called two days before the pick-up day to ask for an information. During the call they told me right away I must have done the assurance, for a cost of 80€ a day. I said it was too much and I asked for the reason of this high cost. He told me that if I wasn't happy about it I could go and get another car, then he closed and never replied my many calls. Eventually he blocked my number and I couldn't do anything else then cancelling the reservation.

Shame on Kayak that is dealing with fraud companies like Nextcar. I’m disputing the payment because the company doesn’t exist in Bucharest. We went all the way to the office and there’s no furniture, no people, just an empty office and people from next door telling us that the police has been many time here looking for someone from Nextcar. This is a scam!

They take you to some spot away from the airport, ask you to sign a bunch of documents. Claim they are taking a deposit then when you get a chance to actually read the documents you find out they never took a deposit but rather charged you more than 10 times ( $1700 for a $180 booking) more for non-refundable LIABILITY insurance. They even have the nerve to try to talk you into comprehensive, at that price ($170/day for $20k car), it should include a driver as well. I tried to cancel when I took a look at the contract, but they refused to refund my money and puffed his chest like he wanted to fight me.

They asked for my credit card to add it to the file until I sent the proof of insurance. I dropped the car off a day earlier and I’m still waiting for them to refund my $2,348.52. On top of this they processed it as a charge not just authorizing my credit card and had to pay $70.45 internațional fees. When I returned the car they said they will refund the money in 48 hours and this didn’t happened yet since 6/25. Very unprofessional. I have to open a fraudulent charge investigation now. Please advise and help me recover my money! Thank you!

The agent was not at the airport on the day of pickup. He told me the reason was that he had called me a day before and I had not answered, which is not true as I have the call logs and haven't received any call/sms/email. Then proceeded to tell me that most of people don't read T&C and that I had to pay 500 EUR insurance for 4 days if I wanted the car, on top of other fees. I am pretty sure something like this would stand out in the invoice, not hidden and nothing to do with T&C because this company would then have much bigger problems than scam sales. I raised a dispute for service not provided, scam offer change. Never again.

They lure you in with a competitive price, then when you arrive at the counter they don’t have the car reserved, they ask for additional money for an “upgrade” and they ask for additional ridiculous amount for insurance coverage that try say it will be refunded at the end of the rental (which was never disclosed at the time of booking online or in the rental advertising). When you provide them with proof of own insurance coverage they refuse to accept it and refuse to refund your money that they force you to pay at the time of pick up. Total scam, there are thousands of similar reviews online. Their reviews are one star across the board. Not a single happy customer. It’s amazing those scammers are still in business.

KAYAK
It's a scam to over sale insurance, and if you don't accept, by refusing, it's a no refund deal! You shouldn't work with them, it makes Kayak part to the scam. Thank you for nothing

KAYAK
This company is a fraud scheme. They lure you in with a good advertised rate better than the market prices, but their business is not car rental. Their business is to sell you a protection package that costs 5X the rental price. They scare you with a huge $3000 deposit if your refuse the package, tell you that you will lose the deposit with even the smallest scratch on the car, and when you insist on paying the deposit, their credit card machines stop working with any cards that you give them. So your choice remains to either buy the ridiculous package or waste all this time, go back to the airport and try to find another rental last minute. All rentals try to upsell insurance, but it is always reasonable. I have never seen such level of abuse. I left .
