Driving in Kosovo is challenging, not least because they drive on the right side of the road and not the left, like in the UK. The driving style is more erratic in this country too, with drivers often not adhering to the rules of the road. Roads outside the city also have potholes, which can make driving difficult. There is also a risk of landslides and flooding in poor weather. If possible, you should try and refrain from driving at night.
To hire a car in Kosovo, you will normally need to be at least 20 years old. The minimum age requirements will vary from company to company. If you are 25 or under, you will also probably need to pay a young person’s surcharge, and there are age restrictions for certain vehicle types too. It’s best to contact your agency prior to travel so that you understand its policy. To hire a vehicle you’ll need a passport, valid ID and credit or debit card in your name.
Petrol prices in Kosovo vary, depending on the company you get the petrol from and the current economic conditions. The average petrol price is around €1.65 (£1.43) per litre, whilst diesel is about €1.75 (£1.51). These prices are likely to vary, depending on a range of factors, such as local competition, oil prices and taxes. It’s worth noting that the petrol stations are normally on main roads, so if you’re heading into the countryside, it’s worth filling-up beforehand.
You must adhere to the speed limits, or you risk being fined by local police. For instance, in urban areas, you can drive as fast as 50 km/h (31 mph). In rural areas this goes up to 80 km/h (50 mph), whilst on motorways, it's 130 km/h (80 mph). If you are caught by a speed camera, your car hire company will fine you and pass your information over to the local authorities.
