We arrived to Crete, there was no counter for Dollar, no person to take the invitation and the car pool was empty and closed! Can't believe I trusted you with my family! I ended up calling Dollar support and they said "there is suppose to be someone there" - bottom line - they have no clue!!! I tossed the invitation to the garbage and went to a local rental. Guess what!? Kayak gave me a 270 Euro proposal, not including car seats for the babies and the local gave me a 240 Euro *including car seats* This was just embracing for Dollar. Thankfully I haven't payed anything to Dollar. If I would, I would probably sew them by now! Never taking this company's services again.

Pros:

Staff was helpful and friendly. A smile and a friendly attitude toward the staff, in spite of flight delays and long lines and an airport terminal with no amenities, goes a long way. They've likely been dealing with grumpy, disheveled travelers all. Day. Long.

Cons:

My husband and I have twice rented twice from the Heraklion Airport location, and both times they have seemed understaffed... an extra employee or two would go a long way toward improving wait times and the overall customer experience.

A receipt copy since as per agreement, I was to drop the car at a location different from the airport. However, they informed us that if we drop at the airport, I will be charged 22.3 EUR less. I would like to get a confirmation of the accurate charges

Avoid this Europcar office. Like a previous reviewer, they also gave me the hard sell on the insurance (when I already had my own coverage). As for the car, they supposedly gave me an upgrade to a larger one (I actually deliberately requested a smaller car for the narrow roads of Crete and I explained that to them). The larger car turned out to be a total mess. The car already had scrapes and scratches all over, the rubber moulding around the driver's side door was falling out, the light on the passenger door was falling out, and after driving around 25km the check engine light came on with a message to get the engine serviced. When I returned it at night-time, they went over the car in detail with a flashlight and blamed me for one of the scratches which was already there (among the many scrapes). I don't think they gave me the "upgrade" out of kindness ...

DO NOT RENT FROM EUROPCAR IN CRETE!! EVER! Upon arrival to rent the car, the representative wanted to sell us their own insurance for the car, at 220 EUR. As I already purchased insurance from Kayak, I informed the representative that I don't need their insurance. He started arguing on this, and informed that that I will need to pay 2500 EUR deposit for the car in this case, because they don't recognize the insurance I bought, even though I showed him all the documents, and as far as he is concerned I have no insurance, and therefore I need to deposit 2500 EUR. After some back and forth discussions, in which he continued to try to force me to buy their insurance, which I refused, I finally agreed to deposit 2500 EUR. Then upon checking back, he said that he can't accept that, and now he needs 4000 EUR for the deposit. At this point I was very upset, and didn't agree to go along with it. Then the representative told me that in this case they don't want to rent the car to me at all. Without any choice, I agreed to pay their 220 EUR for the insurance, paying double for insurance, but then the representative continued on the same stand and didn't want to rent the car to me. He used additional representatives over the phone and others to convince me that suddenly they don't have this car available for me, and used some lame excuse saying that I was late to the counter for more than an hour (because a delay in the flight). Eventually I couldn't continue to rent the car there. I went to other car rentals, one by one, and with luck Avis had the car that I needed for the duration for my vacation. I ended up paying almost 400 EUR more for the rental, and of course the insurance I bought from Kayak was unused. This was a terrible experience. My family had to wait for 2 hours until this issue was resolved, we missed lunch at the hotel, had a very bad start to our vacation, and only with luck we found the car we needed. The horrible representative's name is Anthony. I wouldn't recommend anyone to use Europcar in Crete at all. They provided the worst service possible.

Upon arrival I tried to pick up my rental. The lady working the Europcar desk told me that since I did not have an “international drivers license” I was not allowed to rent a car from Europcar. Absolutely at NO TIME was I ever informed of this requirement. I’ve traveled to many countries and have never even heard of an “international drivers license.” Completely insane. Also, it was 11 PM and we were 2.5 hours away from our hotel. She did not care at all. Fortunately I was able to walk to enterprise and easily rent a car without an “international drivers license.” If I didn’t know any better I’d say she chose not to rent a car to me once she found out I was American. Never will try to rent from this pathetic company again.

Apparently, in greece now the government is pushing for international driver's license before rental. Never needed it before so, maybe large highlighted warning notices should be displayed when renting on your site.

Forced to buy car insurance or face a $2000 hold on credit card. Bought their insurance, still put a $400 hold on card. Gave a car that was a total POS, scraped up, no AC, pieces falling off during the driving. Don’t recommend this company at all.

I liked the car, the service from people. But my deposit money has not been unlocked yet. And there was a problem with the pick-up, because I followed the location given from Kayak.com, but turns out the car was near airport, so I did my the bus trip twice. Other than that, everything was fine.

When we arrived at the airport to pick up our car, we were told that we needed to pay for the booking in cash, which is extremely unusual. It turns out that if you pay by cash, your credit card company does not cover the insurance, so if we paid by cash, we would have had to pay an extra EUR 280 in insurance. I told the agent that this was unexpected and unfair, but he told me that his boss said that Economy Rent-a-Car reservations had to be paid in cash I called the Economy office in Greece, and I was told that they couldn't help me, that this was between me and the agent I found this so unprofessional that I called the Economy office in the USA, where they told me that indeed this was an unusual policy and they were going to check for me why they are asking me to pay by cash. Unfortunately, they hung up on me Fortunately, I had an email from Economy from one month before in which they confirmed that I could pay with any credit card. When I showed this to the agent, he immediately agreed to take the card payment, without every consulting with his supervisor (see the first paragraph, in which he told me that it was his boss that was forcing him to take a cash payment) To add insult to injury, when we got the car it was a Peugeot 108, which only has 4 seats and barely any room for luggage. I had specifically chosen the "small" category instead of "mini", because we needed room for a baby stroller. The confirmation I got from priceline says "Volkswagen Polo or similar". Economy translates this to "Fiat Panda or similar". Both the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Panda have 5 seats and a decent-size trunk. Instead, the Peugeot 108 was extremely tiny and we could barely fit ourselves and the luggage; we had to travel in really uncomfortable conditions. The Peugeot 108 looks much more like the Toyota Aygo, which is a "mini" car As a final note, the trunk door broke during the trip and could not longer remain open on its own, so that I had to hold it up while placing the quite heavy baby stroller inside

We were third in line and waited 45 minutes in the hot sun--process could have been quicker! No VW Polo's available so we got a Fiat Panda which looked to be 10 years old. Four people and four bags just barely fit and it took four tries to close the back hatch. The car did the job and got us around Crete, but the VW Polo we saw on the lot at drop-off sure looked much nicer!

BE CAREFUL DON’T USE KAYAK - My experience with AddCar was good. But my experience with KAYAK was horrendous at best. They gave me the wrong address and phone number of the rental company and I waited with my family in the sun for hours. I was in contact with qeeq/kayak and they told me that it would be considered a no show even though they acknowledged that they gave me the wrong information and the rental company had no way of contacting me.
