Poor customer service andPros:NoneCons:I booked a car rental in Costa Rica (San Jose) via Kayak.com. Economy Rent a Car refused to provide me the car I booked online. They wanted almost $200 for additional Insurance for a 3 day rental period and did not accept my own insurance. I refused to go with them and rented a car with budget instead. Don't go for Economy Rent a Car!Reviewed 5 Apr 2016

Misleading prices from KayakPros:Not much. Car worked. That's about it.Cons:The price I was quoted on the site was NOT the same as what was provided to me. I was pressured into getting the best insurance. Even though I purchased insurance through Kayak, which was essentially worthless. I will be pursuing this further to see if I an get some sort of confirmation. The key was broken and held together by gum. Seriously. GUM. And I didnt realize this until I had reached my destination and the next morning went to start the car and they key fell apart in my hands. Like I said, I will be pursuing further compensation for the misquoted price and horrible vehicle.Reviewed 22 Feb 2017

Buyer Beware - Hidden Insurance Fees 3X rental priCons:Got a quote for $157 for a Hyundai H1 van for 7 days over Kayak. Flew down to Costa Rica and when I picked up the car at Economy by airport, they surprised me with a quote for $530 after government mandated insurance was applied. Very MISLEADING to quote someone $157 regardless of whether the fineprint said insurance was not included or not, because no reasonable person would imagine that the INSURANCE WOULD COST 3X MORE than rental price. Costa Rica has a government owned insurance MONOPOLY so they completely screw over the renter. Just set expectations. If you quoted $500, then so be it, I buy it for $500, but don't quote $157 and surprise me. It's all about setting expectations. FAILURE. Also it took 45 minutes to wait in line to get to the Economy counter. There were only 2 people in line in front of me. I don't know what took so long. Wait I'm guessing because everyone freaked out and argued about the insurance.Reviewed 20 Apr 2016

Incompetent counter service and inaccurate pricingPros:The upgraded vehicle that they were required to give me was clean and drivable.Cons:If you've rented a vehicle in CR, you know about the "mandatory" auto insurance. It's outrageously priced and not mentioned before pickup. Our vehicle was $184 for the week but insurance was over $500. We listened to multiple customers have the exact same surprise. Our pick up took well over two hours because they are very slow at the counter and also did not have our vehicles ready. At one point we were told that they were gassing our vehicles up but 45 minutes later were told that we were getting an upgrade because our vehicles weren't there. Our upgrades were listed as full size 4WD SUVs but we learned quickly when we arrived at our home (on the top of a gravel road mountain top) that they were in fact not 4WD. The final blow was when we returned our vehicles a day early and they advised us that they do not credit for unused days. Unfortunately for them, my credit card company does.Reviewed 13 Jul 2016

Please do not get scammed by this company!Cons:Where should I start? I had reserved an SUV from Economy Rent A Car (San Jose Airport) Costa Rica on Kayak 1 week prior to arriving. My family and I were shuttled to the rent a car location to pick up our vehicle, but when the paperwork was almost finalized we were told that we needed additional liability insurance which would cost us $50 per day for 2 weeks, plus a down payment of $5000. This obviously didn't sound right so we decided not to rent the car. We had a couple of days before we ventured into Costa Rica so we decided to do a little research. My wife so happens to be Costa Rican and contacted the main office in Costa Rica and spoke with the regional manager. The regional manager stated that the holding fee was only $2500, and that liability insurance was only $20 a day. I also found this information on the Economy Rent A Car/Costa Rica website under policies. However, the person that helped at the airport Economy location literally tried to fabricate the numbers on a calculator and came up with an additional claim that totalled $50 even after showing him the policy information from the website. With the guarantee from the regional manager that the downpayment and daily cost of the liability insurance would be less, we asked to reserve another vehicle at an Economy Rent A Car in downtown San Jose. When we came to pick our car from that location, we were told that our car was given away to another person and that they had ABSOLUTELY no cars available and they would have to transfer a car from Jaco which would take 4 hours. We asked to speak with the regional manager who had guaranteed us a car and cost of the insurance, but was told he was not there and there was no way of contacting him. I decided to check on Travelocity to see if in fact that they had no cars available, but to our surprise Travelocity showed that they did in fact have cars available. When I showed this information to the clerk, they miraculously produced a car! I will never use Economy Rent A Car ever again! This experience obviously left us very skeptical in dealing with any merchant for the rest of our trip. I wish I would have done more research on renting a car in Costa Rica, but the fact is that this company in no way is a legitimate company that provides decent service and will try to scam away any unknowing tourist. Lastly, when we complained to the clerk at the San Jose Airport Economy about the issue with the insurance, his reply was, "you can right a bad review about us if you want." Please do not use Economy Rent A Car in Costa Rica. Be aware that even if your credit card provides rent a car insurance, expect to pay additional liability insurance. Research the local rent a car website and policies before you are scammed of your money. Good luck.Reviewed 24 Feb 2016

Scam artistsPros:Clean car, ran well.Cons:Our rate was 7x higher than quoted on the internet. They force you to buy government liability insurance in Costa Rica but they do not disclose a set rate. Put a $2500 hold on our card which we have yet to see if it will be refunded. Every person I saw at the ticket counter went through the same encounter with the rate being much much higher than quoted. The gas was 6/8 full and you were told to just fill to that level on return but on examination of the dents/scratches/mileage sheet they listed the car as being full. If you brought it back less than full they charged $18 per 1/8 tank. Returns and pick up are not on site at the airport. There is no on site rental at San Jose airport in Costa Rica. I can not believe Kayak continues to keep this company on their list.Reviewed 8 Feb 2017

unprofession and a rip offCons:Very unprofessional horrible experience. My family waited in a very short line for over 2 hours. when finally getting to the counter they gave our car away and they force you to purchase insurance. which doubled the price of the rental and were required to put a deposit down on your credit card. After the 2 hour wait and feeling hostage in a foreign country, we still have a 2 hour drive to our destination. My husband was flying in the following day, so we were unable to all ride (6 passengers with luggage) in the same car. We had to rent a separate shuttle to get back to the airport. I will never use this company again..Reviewed 8 Aug 2016

Meh, what did you expect?Pros:The folks there are friendly, the shuttle is really reliable and clean, the vehicles are all new and run well, its a well run operation. I will rent from them again for sure.Cons:I didn't and don't like the secretive pricing that all of the rental car companies in Costa Rica use. This was my second trip, so I knew what to expect, but anyone reading this should know: It's not 8-12 bucks per day, it's like 50-70 after the insurance. I rented a midsize SUV with the full insurance package and it was $725 for 10 days, which, in my opinion, was fine. Who would actually expect to rent a car for two weeks and pay $100 anyway? come on. But be aware that is going to happen, so you don't end up being one of those pissed off jerks shouting at everyone in the office :pReviewed 3 Mar 2016

Costa Rica Economy Rent a CarPros:I rented a car from Economy based on your website's claim that the car rental place was at the airport site and that my US insurance would cover the car.Cons:In fact, one had to use a shuttle bus to get to the rental office and then the information provided by Kyak was incorrect. According to the employees at the rental company, Costa Rica does not allow cars to be rented without insurance purchased in the country. My cost for the car went from the Kyak quoted fee of $50 to above $300, more than six times the cost. Kayak you need to do your homework. You put me and my vacation in a very precarious situation! In terms of the car company, "let the buyer beware!" The sales reps are very aggressive and want you to sign for the car before examining it. Given the fact that the fees were so far off, I did not trust them and would not sign for the car, which was lucky because they claimed there were no scratches or dents, which could not have been further from the truth.Reviewed 9 Nov 2016

Not many choicesCons:The car was older and beat up. It had over 75,000 miles on it. I did rent an automatic so that may be why selection was very poor. The car had many ding, dents and problems. The USB plug in did not work. It kinda smelled like smoke. Be prepared to buy the insurance at the counter. Don't bother purchasing a policy online like I did. I was told it would cover the car in Costa Rica and I had to purchase the suggested insurance or put down a deposit of $2500. The car, in my opinion, wasn't even worth that much. So what I thought was going to be $50 car rental and my pre-purchased insurance of approx $40 turned out to be over $225 for 4 days of rental. Then they added on $13 because my tank was 1/8 of a gallon less than it should have been and $80+ because the rental was returned less than six hours late. (Traffic was horrendous and navigation via cell phone was interrupted because the USB would not charge the phone; therefore, we got lost!) Live and learn and please learn from my mistakes.Reviewed 31 Mar 2017

Low tire pressure and spare tire rim was bentPros:Service was quick and shuttle from airport was speedy. Friendly enough.Cons:The front left tire was missing the cap and all of the tires had low pressure. We had a flat tire out of nowhere - changed the flat ourselves but the spare had a bent rim. Went to the service station and all tires needed air. We were leaving for airport in morning and I didn't want to drive all the way on the bent rim. I called and they offered to open the Jaco branch 30 min early so we would have time to make our flight and change out the tire. They ended up opening at 8 and I was rushed. Don't assume that they will perform regular maintenance or inspection. With insurance it was ~50 a day which is about the cheapest you can find for SUV. Again, you get what you pay for.Reviewed 26 May 2017
