Top tips for hiring a car at Honolulu Airport

  • A car rental at Honolulu Airport (HNL), also known as Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, is a convenient transportation means compared to other transit options. First, you won't have to spend a lot of time on the road like public transportation. For instance, car rides to downtown Honolulu (roughly 6.1 miles away) can take about 11min, while buses have a 32min approximate travel time. Also, you'll eliminate the chance of having to wait for a bus. Car rental charges are usually upfront with no hidden or additional fees, unlike other means such as taxis and shuttles.
  • When considering a car rental at Honolulu Airport, note that you can select between companies with on- or off-terminal locations. Car rental agencies with locations on-airport are mostly the larger chains that are typically pricier. If you're tight on funds, we advise that you rent from the smaller agencies that generally have their locations outside the airport. Regardless of the option you choose, getting to the car rental offices and parking lots will be simple, thanks to the presence of courtesy shuttles.
  • Returning your Honolulu Airport car rental is seamless. First, ensure that you adhere to the fuel policy per the rental contract, i.e., whether it's prepaid fuel, the company refills, or you refill. When you're ready to drop off the rental car, take the I-H-1 W from Punchbowl Street, head to the airport exit, and use the left two lanes to enter Rodgers Boulevard. Follow the Rental Car Return signs and head over to the specific company parking lot, where you'll find a company attendant who'll help you to complete the process.
  • Honolulu Airport tends to have morning and evening rush hour traffic, making it difficult to pick up or drop off your rental car. Regular weekday peak travel times are around 5 -8 am going into Honolulu and about 3 - 6.30 pm heading out of Honolulu. Therefore, it'll be advantageous to place your arrival time outside the morning traffic and time your departure away from the evening traffic window to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at Honolulu Airport for S$ 59 or less
  • Book your car hire at Honolulu Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Honolulu Airport

  • Where can I find the car rental companies at Honolulu Airport?

On-airport car rental offices lie on Terminal 2 parking garage's ground floor, about half a mile from the commuter or Hawaiian terminals. The easiest and fastest means to get to the rental centers is by boarding the car rental shuttles. These vehicles stop in designated locations outside of baggage claim areas along the center median, and the rides run every 7-10min. If your airline lands at the overseas terminal (Terminal 2), cross the street to the parking garage structure after exiting baggage claims E, F, G, or H and head over to the company counters on the ground floor.

  • Which rental companies at Honolulu Airport are the easiest to use?

There are about six rental car companies with locations within the airport vicinity, making it easy to pick up vehicles. The companies include Avis, National, Hertz, Budget, SIXT, and Enterprise, with the first five having offices at Terminal 2's ground parking area and the last one 5min away on Aolele Street. Enterprise also has self-service kiosks that smoothen the rental experience, while National has an After Hours Return service to make the vehicle drop-off simple.

  • What kind of documents will I need to rent a car at Honolulu Airport?

You must submit a valid, unexpired driver's license that includes your photograph to qualify for a car rental at Honolulu airport. International drivers also must provide a foreign driver's license that consists of a picture, and you won't need an International Driver's Permit to rent a car in the state of Hawaii. You'll also need a valid credit or debit card at the time of rental.

  • How much does it cost to rent a car at Honolulu Airport?

On average a rental car at Honolulu Airport costs S$ 63 per day.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Honolulu Airport?

The only car rental company that offers shuttle or pick-up services from Honolulu Airport to off-airport locations is Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The vehicle on the website when booking was different to the actual vehicle I was allocated upon pick up. So wasn’t very pleased with this false advertising. Upon pick up the customer service was terrible, the lady at Sixt tried to make it out as if she was being helpful when in actual fact she wasnt. I would never book through Kayak and Sixt again. They can't seem to figure out how to run an efficient business, especially the Dollar at the HNL airport and the one in Llikai hotel. Also, why are these agents called customer service? They can't seem to answer one single question a customer has. Every time I asked a question the response I got was "Sorry, we can't help with that. Please call the call center for help." It is an insult to the phrase "Customer Service". To say the experience was a disappoint is an understatement- kinda like that scene in many movies when the director focuses on a tiny blurred spec of dust and then suddenly zooms in unveiling the entire universe. Lastly, I will desperately pray to every known deity in the world that I never, ever, in this short life make the mistake of booking a rental with Dollar and if for some desperate, last ditch effort to save the very essence of humanity forces me to rent with Dollar, then I pray that I get that one living, breathing mysterious and ever illusive individual in the entire enterprise of Dollar rental who can actually help or says, "yes, I don't know but let me help by figuring it out." Let's face it - if we can't find the agent 00infinite who holds the key to all the mysteries that is Dollar rental, then what hope can humanity cling to?

It should have been known ahead of me flying in and picking up the car that even with a deposit I would not be allowed to rent certain cars without a credit card. I was willing to double my deposit and buy there insurance but still could not get car I reserved. I normally have my Amex on me but unfortunately left without it. Fortunately I had plenty of cash in my checking account to cover all expenses, so I thought. Really started our vacation out on a very bad start. Ended up with a tiny car for a family of 5 with luggage. If you are willing to over pay for the insurance and put a much larger deposit down. Then why fret over not having a Credit Card. They even ran a credit check when I said I left my Credit Card. It’s only a Jeep not a Maserati.

Upon arrival the agent was very aggressive with pushing an upgrade. We reserved a mystery car which was described as a potential EV or similar. We were given a suburban which would not fit in the garage. She would only allow us an “upgrade” to receive a standard size vehicle. The service and pressure to pay more are insane! If I have a choice in the future I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Complete manipulation especially when having traveled so many hours to show up tired and having no other options. It’s sickening that these companies are so misleading!

Well...it all started when I landed at the airport and walked over to the rental car counter. Thankfully there was no wait at all which was nice. However, after pulling up my reservation they immediately told me they did not have the vehicle I reserved. Which is the entire point of making a reservation, so they would hold (aka reserve) the vehicle I selected. So off the bat that was very disappointing. That was strike one. They offered me a "complimentary upgrade" to a minivan. Going from a full size SUV to a minivan is not an upgrade in my eyes and I told them that. As a result, they offered me a downgrade to a smaller SUV, but didn't offer any kind of discount in the total fee. So that was strike two. After settling on a vehicle, I handed over my license and credit card and low and behold, another ~$138 bucks were due at the counter. This was for taxes/fees/usage/blah blah blah (not gas), all the things that I thought I already paid, and the only reason I went with this booking was because of the lower rate. Turns out it was just as expensive as all the others after you added in these additional charges. Why in the world would you not charge these at the time of the booking? I'm sure they can offer some explanation consisting of "We don't charge these at the time of booking because if your trip changes then these charges will change and blah blah blah blah", but the truth is likely that they don't charge them up front so it looks as if you're getting a better rate. Then when you walk in the door to pickup your car, and you have no other options because all of the other vehicles are booked, you're up the river without a paddle and you're forced to proceed if you want the vehicle. There's strike three. Normally they'd be out, but it keeps going. After finishing the paperwork and going through the above hassles (after a full day of traveling keep in mind), I short stroll down to the parking garage where I'm directed to the vehicle. I do a walk around the outside to check for damage, which there was minimal damage in the form of small scratches and dings, I hopped in and got on my way. To my unpleasant surprise, about 20 minutes into my drive away from the airport, I noticed an ant on the center console. I squished it and didn't think much of it. It wasn't until the second ant, then the third, forth, fifth, sixth...etc appeared and were squished that I realized there was an ant infestation in the vehicle. Luckily it seemed to be centralized around the center console, however my party did end up with multiple unidentified "bug bites" by the end of our trip. Strike 4. Needless to say, after trip suggestions to Thrifty and any other companies involved in this rental experience: 1. Don't offer a reservation if you do not understand the definition of a reservation. That is the definition of incompetence. 2. Don't try to up--sell a customer to something they don't want, and adversely, if the customer settles for a lesser vehicle than what was "reserved", give them the appropriate discount. 3. Don't hide fees or costs, if you can't compete with other rental companies by being honest about the total cost, you shouldn't be in business. That's unethical and shouldn't be part of your "business plan" for success. 4. Clean the cars. It's not hard. Seriously. I will say, on a positive note the overall time to pickup and drop off the rental car was very quick. Also the attendant handling the multitude of issues was professional and polite.

One of the tires had a leak and we had to re-inflate each morning. The key fob didn't work and we could only lock/unlock the car manually. The Bluetooth/stereo would freeze and re-boot every 10 or 15 minutes of driving, the drivers seatbelt didn't automatically retract anymore and there were random pills in the door pocket when they gave us the car.... If Kayak had disclosed the rental company before booking, I would have gone with someone else. The car was cheap though so at least I saved some money.

The price was the only redeeming factor. The van they gave me was falling apart. They tried to upsell me many many things. The staff were short and rude.

The check in was incredibly quick, they had the exact vehicle I wanted and I went straight to it in the lot after checking in. The price was good for what I needed and check in was contactless and smooth. 10/10 will use again

Got to the first vehicle they offered us and it was broken and had tears in the seats and missing parts of the interior. They then said that they didn’t have anything else in the full size suv that I paid for so I had to pay to upgrade to a smaller suv cause it was considered luxury. That vehicle had no shock and was the worst and bumpiest vehicle I have ever driven.

Absolutely. That context makes the experience significantly more frustrating because you were already dealing with an exhausting travel situation. I’d include it without making it sound overly dramatic: This was our first time renting from this company, and we specifically chose them because a family member had recommended them. Unfortunately, our experience at the Honolulu Airport location was horrible. We reserved and paid for a toddler car seat with our rental. When we arrived, we were initially told that there was no car seat on our reservation. After showing the employee our confirmation proving that we had reserved one, we were then told that someone must have taken our car seat. We asked whether another car seat was available and were told they would get one for us. From that point, we were strung along for over an hour. We were repeatedly told it would only be a few more minutes, but no one ever brought us a car seat or gave us a clear answer about what was happening. What made this experience even more difficult was the circumstances we were already dealing with. We had just come from Kauai after experiencing a hurricane and being without power for several days. We were exhausted, traveling with our three young children, and simply trying to get safely to our next destination. We had specifically reserved a toddler car seat ahead of time because we needed to know that safe transportation would be available for our family when we arrived in Honolulu. Instead, after everything we had already been through, we spent more than an hour at the airport waiting for something we had reserved and paid for, only to ultimately leave without a rental car at all. When it became clear that they could not provide the car seat, we decided we needed to cancel the rental. We were then told that the employees at the location could not cancel our reservation and that we would have to call customer service ourselves. Despite the fact that they were unable to provide what we had reserved, they still attempted to charge us for the rental. Trying to cancel and receive a refund was just as frustrating. I was sent in circles and repeatedly connected to the local Honolulu Hertz phone number, where no one answered. At no point did I feel like anyone cared about the situation, took responsibility, or made a meaningful effort to make it right. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of concern or urgency from the people we dealt with. We understood that mistakes can happen and that equipment can become unavailable, but the way the situation was handled was unacceptable. Rather than being upfront with us, finding a solution, or taking responsibility for being unable to fulfill our reservation, we were repeatedly told to keep waiting and then left to deal with the cancellation and refund ourselves. It was an incredibly disappointing first experience, especially after choosing this company based on a family member's recommendation. After an already exhausting few days for our family, this was the last thing we needed. Based on the way this situation was handled, I would not rent from them again and would not recommend them to others.

Pick up was bait and switch. Car not ready. Did precheck to “skip the line.” Tried to up sell me in order to get into a car. Waited an hour and forty minutes and told only car available was compact, not SUV and there was no way to refund money. I held my ground and got the car unordered but was terrible customer service and terrible policy and management. Will NEVER use Hertz again and will be telling this story on social media platforms.
