Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Pros: "attentive and polite flight attendants"
Pros: "The Xiamen reps at the SGN airport was insensitive and arrogant. We were not able to board because of a misunderstanding on the China visa-free program. I still fully believe they are wrong. I had to book 2 new one way tickets with China Southern and wait all day at the airport."
Cons: "Helpful, courteous, and well-informed Xiamen representatives."
Cons: "Delayed / diverted - no communications whatsoever"
Pros: "Crew was friendly"
Cons: "To many transfers"
Pros: "yes crew were amazing"
Cons: "ticketing was terrible, id number is totally different from our passport.causing lots of ordeal in check in and security check"
Cons: "I was charge a terribly high exchange rate for this tickets! Not acceptable at all."
Cons: "Flight got delayed in Xiamen, miss the connecting flight to chongqing."
Pros: "Getting off of the plane"
Cons: "This was a discount garbage carrier. I have ridden on cargo boats off the coast of Nicaragua that I would recommend before Xiamen. They don’t give you your connecting boarding pass when you leave the country. You have to go through China’s bullshit customs service three times just to get to your next flight. Chinese customs is like a bowl full of retarted fish smelling their own farts. Six people doing nothing while one blithering idiot Stubles through paperwork."
Pros: "The flight was fine"
Cons: "Had to process in and out of immigration then back into airport No transit area"
Pros: "I liked playing tetris and pacman with a controller that was like that of a console. My flight had a lot of empty seats, and I noticed they staggered the seating so that there was nobody in front of me or behind me. Flight crew was genuinely nice and helpful even though we didn't speak the same language. The little cup holder was actually pretty cool. There even seemed to be ample leg room compared to other Chinese international flights I've been on. I've flown previously with china southern and China eastern, so that is my basis for comparison."
Cons: "They didn't give me boarding passes for both flights (had a long layover in china). Other airlines printed both at the start of trip. This added quite a bit of confusion for me, seemingly unnecessarily. Also, I'm a bit disappointed in their free hotel room deal for long layovers. When I had a long layover previously with either china southern or china easter (can't remember which one), I got my own free hotel room, a free meal, and a free ride to and from the hotel. That was a real perk for my 12 hour layover. The deal with xiaman is you get a free hotel room, but you have to share it with a stranger of the same gender, and you have to pay for taxi to and from the hotel. Although you do supposedly get a free meal, I chose not to take them up on the hotel offer. Instead I took them up on their transfers lounge. This is a dark, quiet room full of dingy, dirty padded chairs and people sprawled out and snoring. I would have stayed more than 15 minutes if there were more phone charging plugs, but instead I went and ate mcdonalds and found a plug in at the kfc. Aside from all that, I would suggest getting some better Hollywood movies to choose from, as xiamen's competition has them beat there as well, in my opinion."
Cons: "I didn’t realize that Chinese transit visa is needed to transfer at Xiamen airport. When I bought the tickets, I wasn’t notified nor advised to get the Chinese visa. The Xiamen rep at Lax didn’t let me board first and I explained and they gave me the visa waiver paperwork. It was so much of hassle. I’ve laid over many Chinese cities via different airlines and never had any problems. Will not fly again on Xiamen!!"
Cons: "Xiamen reps at KUL didn’t let me board because they said my middle name on boarding pass didn’t match with the name on Chinese transit visa. I got this Chinese transit visa just to transfer because of the airport layout and that part was also didn’t make sense. They didn’t accept my middle “Y” on the boarding pass and it was so much of hassle to argue and finally let me through. Will never fly again on Xiamen."
Pros: "The flight is easy to check gave us 23kgs check in luggage 46kgs if u have intl flight. Free hotel with breakfast. Not bad at all."
Cons: "They require us to get the luggage and check in again tomorrow."
Cons: "Why is my passport number wrong?"
Pros: "The number of take offs equaled the number of landings :)"
Pros: "crew was nice"
Cons: "food was dry"
Pros: "Empty seats"
Cons: "Everything else. Staff was rude and did not speak English, food was terrible, and the airport was very confusing. We had a 4 hour layover at Xiamen airport and instead of going straight to our gate, they made us go through immigration, then transfer services, then back through immigration. We landed at 5am, the transfer services open at 6, then check in opens at 6:50, but we weren’t allowed to check in until 8am because our flight was at 10am. We basically stood in line without anyone giving clear instructions and waited at different line ups for 1 hour each. Horrible airplane, horrible airport. Never transferring here again."
Cons: "The check in staff did not let me check in and denied to support me! The reason was that my first name, middle name and last name were written in English order, not in Chinese order! I want my money back! All of my plan and meetings in Xiamen were cancelled!"
Pros: "Clean plane. Left on time. A little more seat room than many other carriers."
Cons: "Poor selection of movies. Want more light comedy"
Cons: "wrong food?"
Pros: "Complimentary wifi and excellent crew service"
Cons: "The econ seat is too low, when front seater tilted the seat backward, the screen is right in front of my face. Entertainment video screen doesn’t adjust; in other words, it cannot be adjust in angle, causing neck pain over time. Meals are average, definitely different from the quality compared to regional or domestic equivalent. Very sad, considering that Xiamen Air has a good reputation inside China. The restroom is also poorly stocked — no toilet roll constantly"
Pros: "Price and flight were great. Communicating was small problem. 5 am arrival nothing open so couldn't change money for food, taxi etc. Finally found an ATM that worked. People used their cell phones to try and communicate."
Cons: "Some obstacles with early morning arrival and communications"
Pros: "Nice wide seats, well run flight. Lots of food served, though very mixed quality. The unfortunate experiences described in the negatives of this review, do not repeat on the return flight."
Cons: "In the fine print is the fact that the flight includes a stop in Shenzen. On the outbound flight this was a nightmare experience with Chinese immigration. Exhausted from a 14 hour flight, passengers had their passports taken away; were put through a bizarre 45 minute finger printing process using machines that did not work; and then left to wait for an hour or more with no information. The continuation flight was in another part of the airport - a very long walk; and it turned out not to be at the departing gate that was displayed on the monitors. We arrived at the indicated (wrong) gate with no guidance. Very nearly missed the continuation flight. Once in Xiamen, our arrival was late enough that the second floor of the airport was closed. There were no ATMs on the first floor; no way to get the Chinese cash needed to take a taxi to the airport. Fortunately a kind citizen agreed to exchange some cash, using mental calculations and sign language about the exchange rate."
Cons: "My keychain was ripped off from my baggage despite me hiding it. It was stolen by their baggage handler and the airline refused to admit liability and was protecting it Staff. Xiamenair is a corrupted airline which I will not take in the future!"
Cons: "Nobody helped me switch my flight around, I hate you."
Pros: "I like the price but best of all the service and the attention given to us by all staff members."
Cons: "Everything was great!"
Cons: "They cancelled my ticket I had to purchase my ticket again"
Pros: "Seat were comfortable , staff friendly"
Cons: "The long layover"
Pros: "Crew working hard. Seat comfort and clean restroom."
Cons: "Awful food. I basically not eating, going hungry."
Pros: "Good was pretty good, with snack sandwich between meals. Drinks were offered often."
Cons: "The flight was delayed by 40 minutes."
Pros: "Staff was friendly"
Pros: "Nice and friendly. Chinese is always spoken first then followed by English. Pillow and blanket provided."
Cons: "Window seat on a 14 hour flight has its pros and cons. Little more room vs having to wake people up to get up and walk or go to bathroom."
Pros: "The food was good and staff was friendly"
Pros: "Crews, food. Also Transfer Lounge in Xiamen is a good place without charge."
Cons: "Boarding because we have to take bus at Xiamen airport. Also, security checks at Xiamen are very complicated."
Pros: "no regards for customers"
Cons: "no regards for customers"
Pros: "The offerings of beverages and the choices were good"
Cons: "Lack of communication by staff. Lack of entertainment on 14 hour flight. Was told not to use device while others were able to use."
Cons: "The flight was delayed due to air traffic control. Subsequently I missed my connecting flight -- Xiamen to Manila that evening and had to spend another night in China. Next flight out of Xiamen was 6pm, Nov 2. Xiamen ground staff was very helpful in booking me the option to fly China Southern to Guangzhou the night of Nov 1, stay for free in a hotel, and then take the 0835 morning China Southern flight from Guangzhou to Manila. It was difficult to identify the right people to speak with and get clear assistance and direction in both Xiamen and Guangzhou."
Pros: "I love the fact that the program that launches the flight were pretty new, but the fact is; everything run like a well oiled machine. From customer service to departure everything went smoothly. Since the flight was brand new not a lot of people knew about they're great deal. I bought a one way ticket to xiamen because I will be working a school teacher. I didn't realized til later on that it's possible for someone with a z visa to receive an extra 23kg check in baggage for free. I contacted the customer service who replied within a day and everything was fixed. Now, I've been travelling a good amount to China and US, so far the food that are good is xiamen airlines. It's healthy, not greasy, and my stomach didn't hurt."
Cons: "For now ? Nothing. It's my first time riding this airline and I would definitely pick this than China southern or eastern airlines. I have been disappointed with them too many times.... food suck, cramped leg space, and an overabundance of delayed and cancelled flights. Need improvement: it would be nice if the flight attendant don't assume every Asian is Chinese. Over and over the flight attendants would suggest food options, snacks, and drinks in chinese. I understand this won't be the first nor would it be the last that someone would mistaken me as a native Chinese speaker. Overall, the whole experience was amazing!"
Pros: "In-flight service were adequate. Not much offer for alcoholic beverages. Staff not much English speaking."
Cons: "Xiamen is very bad for transit passenger. 3 immigration check points 3 security baggage checks Has to pick up boarding pass with long lines. Cannot reserve seat on line."
Pros: "Their price"
Cons: "Delays, delays and more delays. Then cancellations after!!!"
Pros: "GOOD Service, Great Priceing!!!"
Cons: "The delay was extremely horrible causing us to miss our flight and then put us on a flight that was once again delayed for another 6 hours. The crew was still hesitant on disclosing the time we would be leaving"
Pros: "Flight crew very courteous. Xiamen Airline crews are always very good, and most flights are pleasant."
Cons: "3 hour delay, with no explanation given!"
Cons: "Was just a bit warm"
Pros: "Boarding was pretty quick."
Cons: "Seats were quite uncomfortable. Not much leg room."
Pros: "Airline was great, staff was nice and attentive. Entertainment was great although the airline will not let you use your cell phone even on airplane mode. I couldn't listen to a book I had downloaded."
Cons: "Bathrooms needed to be cleaned. Changing flights in China was stressful and confusing. You have to go through immigration and my experience was stressful."
